Not Sure What Business Gifts You Should Be Giving?
Here are a few tips....
Consider food. About half of those questioned in a recent American Express survey give food-
related gifts. Combining candy, fruit or flowers with a personalized business item is especially
thoughtful.
New in the office? If you're unsure of the gift-giving traditions, ask around. You don't want to be
in a position where you go against the trends or worse, come off like a scrooge.
Try standing out by being first. If you truly want to be noticed avoid the December crush and
try sending a gift beforeThanksgiving. First gifts get noticed more.
If you're a boss and have received a gift from an employee, returning the courtesy is a must.
For a client to continue remembering you throughout the year, try a gift-of-the-month club.
A great way to make a gift distinctive is to top it off with a related item. For example, if you're
sending or wine, add a mini-book on winemaking.
If your gift is to be consumed, send it in a container that is a keeper. Your gift will be
remembered longer.
Unless a person is a fitness buff, avoid health-related gifts.
Try to always keep a couple of extra gifts on hand. You’ll be prepared for that unexpected
gift.
If you're sending food, make sure you send non-perishables just in case the recipient is not in
town to receive the gift.
Be careful with cool gadgets. Don't send one unless you know it will work. If it breaks after a
few uses, it's a poor reflection on you.

Workers’ Compensation Update
As we enter into the fall, there are a number of key workers’ compensation items that you
need to be aware of. Both the Lake County Chambers of Commerce and
CompManagement want you to be aware of the following:
Group Rating - We are fast approaching another workers’ compensation group
rating campaign! By mid-November, group rating quotes from
CompManagement will be mailed out, with your chance to save on your workers’
comp premiums. If you are currently in the group program, you will
automatically be notified of your status and quote. If you are not currently in the
program, it is in your best interest to complete a temporary letter of authority
(AC-3), available on our website, to receive information on how to save money.
Salary Continuation – Many employers in Ohio have utilized salary continuation
for a number of years. This practice allows employers to continue the salary of
injured worker for a finite period of time, which provides a financial benefit to
both the employer and employee. By utilizing this approach, it eliminates any
reserve being calculated by the BWC, therefore not impacting the employer’s rate
calculation. The BWC is currently evaluating this practice, and may be
calculating a reserve on those claims in the future. The good news is that the
BWC latest reserving system (MIRA II) seems to be much more responsive and
fair to Ohio’s employers. It appears that by the time a lost-time claim enters into
an employer’s rate calculation, the corresponding reserve is already “$0. While
this may impact how you manage your workers’ comp claims in the future, we
will keep you posted on any developments.
Group “Retro” – Group Retrospective Rating is a program offered by the Ohio
Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) that allows employers in similar
industries to “pool” together to save on premiums. It that respect, it is very much
like group rating, however this program provides an opportunity to receive a
refund from BWC rather than an up-front discount. This program is designed for
mid-sized to larger employers, who typically, do not qualify for a group rating
program. It is “performance based” meaning that the BWC compares premiums
paid to losses incurred in the policy year. In essence, if the premiums paid by the
individual members of the group are more than the losses incurred during the
year, then those employers receive a refund from BWC. If the losses are higher,
then the BWC will issue an assessment. This program has been very successful in
the State of Washington, which CompManagement is also the administrator of the
program there. More information on this program will be coming early in 2010.
Ohio’s workers’ compensation system is constantly undergoing change, and we at Lake
County Chambers of Commerce and our partner, CompManagement will keep you on top
of those changes. Please stay tuned for future articles on this, and feel free to contact our
office, or Todd Keserich at CompManagement.

Completion of the temporary authorization provides a third-party administrator (TPA) limited
authority to view an employer’s payroll and loss experience. By signing the AC-3, the employer grants
permission to the BWC to release information to the employer’s authorized representative(s). The
form allows a third-party representative to view an employer’s information regarding payroll, claims
and experience modification.
Attention group rating prospects:
• Employers may complete the AC-3, for as many TPAs or group-rating sponsors as they feel are
necessary to obtain quotes for a group-rating program.
• Group Sponsors must notify all current group members if they will not be accepted for the next
group rating year. The deadline for this notification is prior to the first Monday in February for
private employers and prior to the second Friday in August for public employers.
• All potential group-rating prospects must have:
Active BWC coverage status as of the application deadline;
Active coverage from the application deadline through the group-rating year.
No outstanding balances;
Operations similar in nature to the other members of their group.
• Any changes to a group member’s policy will affect the group policy. Changes can result in either
debits or credits to each of the members.
Note:
