Project ideas for final year BEng3 ( Dr Wada Hosny)
1. Modeling, Simulation and experimental verification of an H-bridge controlled
permanent magnet dc motor: To design, build, simulate and verify results of
an open and closed loop controlled dc motor. Control systems requirements
are given as minimum peak to peak motor current limit and a specified range
of speed control. For hardware use IGBT H-bridge as the power drive,
hysteresis controller for the control of motor ripple current and design the
control system parameters to realise speed range specification. Use any
available simulation package

2. Electronic Object Locator: To design, construct and test an electronic
communication system which can locate lost items, objects, animals...etc. The
system is based on FSK coding and decoding and AM modulation and
demodulation theory. The location range is within 300 meters.

3. Position control of a conveyor belt driven by a conventional dc motor: to
design, construct and build a control system encompassing the stationary part
of a linear induction motor, a conveyor belt, position sensors, controller and a
power drive. The function of the controller is to control the position of the belt
within a specified displacement. (For example ± 2 mm).

4. Induction motor soft starter: to design, construct and build an induction motor
controller capable of controlling the motor within specified acceleration and
deceleration. The idea is to limit the motor winding stresses caused by large
starting and braking currents. The speed and acceleration profile are specified
and a controller is designed to meet these specifications. The motor drive is a
set of three triacs, which will be triggered from the drive circuit to be
designed.

5. Voice controlled mobile base: to design, construct and build a motorised base
driven by two small dc motors. The motor drives are two H-bridges. The
switching devices in these bridges will receive their triggering signals from a
limited vocabulary chip. This project can form the basis of the domestic servo
robots.
