All English Literature with Creative Writing and English Literature,
Creative Writing and Practice students are required to take Creative
Writing as one of their two other subjects.
Introduction to English Literature
This course combines a thorough grounding in the major periods
and movements of English literature from the sixteenth century to
the present day with cutting-edge approaches to literary study. It
asks questions about the ways we impart literary value, the
relationship between the author and reader, the contexts in which
texts were written, the importance of gender, class, and ethnicity
to the literary text, and other vital debates in contemporary literary
studies.
Second and third years
The course explores major canonical writers, like Shakespeare,
Milton, and T. S. Eliot, alongside contemporary, revisionary works English Literature students build on their first-year work, focusing in
