Requirements
Candidates for the 5-year Clinical and Translational Research Pathway/Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI)
degree Program Option must be UMass Medical students officially enrolled in the Clinical and Translational Research
(CTR) Pathway program, who are either in their second or third year of medical school. While no minimum grade point
average is required for entry into the program, students applying for admission must have demonstrated superior
academic performance. In addition, students should have some prior research experience.

Prerequisites
Satisfactory enrollment in the Clinical and Translational Research Pathway Program, and completion of at least the first
year of medical school.

Application for Admission
It is highly suggested that you submit your application and personal statement as soon as possible. This will allow the
admissions office to open a file for you and assist you as you work towards getting all your supporting credentials. A
complete application for admission must include all of the following:


         An official admission online application form through ApplyYourself.
         A personal statement of one to two pages (maximum 500 words) describing your educational expectations,
          career aspirations, research experience and any special qualifications or experience. Include your responses to
          the following three questions:
          1. How do you expect this MSCI Program option will prepare you and/or serve to enhance your medical
                school experience and future career as a physician-researcher?
          2. Why would you be an ideal candidate for participation in this program?
          3. What is your proposed Master’s thesis area or question that you anticipate working on? Include the name
                of your proposed faculty mentor, if applicable.


          A current resume or CV.
         Two letters of recommendation from individuals who are able to assess past academic performance, research
          experience, and prospective success in graduate school (CTR Pathway Advisor, Summer Research Faculty
          Mentor and/or other faculty member familiar with applicant’s work/achievements in the CTR Pathway).
         Official transcript from the School of Medicine.
         Copy of AMCAS application and Clinical/Translational Research Pathway application.

Stipend & Tuition, Fee and Health Benefit Support

All students receive stipend support (totaling $15,800) and are considered non-benefited employees of UMass Medical
School (UMMS). Tuition and fee waivers and health benefits are provided at the same level provided to all GSBS full time
students.

Student Costs
Students' costs include books, minor fees, software, and a parking permit. Students should have a laptop computer which
meets specifications of the UMMS.
