Susan Christie Martin, RN, MSN, is director of nursing support services at
UPMC Shadyside with administrative responsibilities for the Clinical Design
Staff, Patient Relations, and Volunteer and Community Services. From her
study of the Toyota Production System, she has applied lean principles to
healthcare, including the hospital’s Clinical Design Initiative (CDI). Martin
directed the first clinical design unit in 1998, which led to the successful
Admission Team improvement effort. She has lectured nationally on CDI for the
Institute for Health Care Improvement.
Martin has held several management posts at UPMC Shadyside over the past
23 years. These included oversight of several nursing units in the hospital,
including IV Services, Family Medicine, Urology, and Endocrinology. Over the
past five years, Martin has directed clinical improvements and is the project lead
in the Transforming Care at the Bedside initiative, a collaboration with the
Institute of Health Care Improvement and the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation.
