VACCINATION- are YOU covered?………
MMR (measles mumps and rubella)
Make sure you have had 2 doses of vaccine in order to fully protect yourself.
This is usually done as part of vaccination programme in childhood
Each year we see increasing numbers of cases of measles and mumps-they often present as
outbreaks in universities and colleges
MEASLES MUMPS
Highly infectious Swelling of glands around face, neck or jaw
Starts like bad cold Usually mild
Develops a fever and rash Can cause complications like swelling of
1 person in 15 gets complications e.g. brain testes(orchitis),inflammation of brain,
inflammation ,fits ,pneumonia deafness
INFLUENZA (FLU)
Seasonal flu is a strain of flu virus that arrives in the UK each autumn.
Flu causes high temperatures, aches and pains in muscles/joints ,cough and runny nose
Most people make a full recovery
Complications can occur in AT RISK GROUPS and they should have a vaccination each year.
AT RISK GROUPS ARE :
chronic (ongoing) lung disease e.g. chronic bronchitis, ● chronic heart disease
cystic fibrosis, asthma (needing regular steroid inhalers or tablets) ● serious liver disease
serious kidney disease ● diabetes
poor immune system-e.g. having long term steroids ● certain serious disease
of nervous system
or chemotherapy or hiv
pregnant
TREATMENT FOR MEASLES, MUMPS AND FLU
Treatment for all these viruses involves general measures to ease symptoms-eg paracetamol and/or
ibuprofen and plenty of fluids.
Very rarely is any other treatment required
