Client Interview

MODULE 6: THE DESIGN PROCESS

Days: 5–7 File name: S.6.5_6_7.WS_Client_Interview
Topic: Development Process – ―Iterative Design‖ – Discovery
Directions:
Review all questions on the worksheet and discuss with your team any decisions that can be
made prior to meeting with your client. Some of the questions included in this document are
specific to selling products. If you have chosen to make a site for instructors’ lessons or other
noncommercial site, modify the questions to reflect that client.
Realize that your client may not have a good understanding of how the Internet works. Be
prepared to answer basic questions for them. Do not assume they will know all of the
definitions in this document. You should create a customized interview worksheet based
from the suggestions given in this worksheet for your specific client based on information
that you already know about them. The Project Manager must schedule a face-to-face visit
with the client during class, at lunch, or before or after school. This modified document
should be sent to the client prior to this meeting for them to review and complete whatever is
possible before the meeting.
Note to student design team: Use the following content to create the worksheet for the first
interview with your client. Re-create this document and customize it to fit the unique client
situation. Remove these instructions before sending to the client.

Page Elements

Text
Please provide the copy/text for your pages. Make sure that this is your final edited version.
We will incorporate the text from the files that you send and provide text formatting
suggestions. Please provide a separate file for each Web page. Be sure to tell us which file's
text belongs on which page. (We prefer Microsoft Word but will accept other formats.)
Remember that while a Web page can be much longer than a traditional 8½ x 11-inch page,
you’ll want to keep it to a reasonable length. Put yourself in the place of your target
audience. Do you like to scroll through long pages—what’s your limit?
Also keep in mind that depending on the screen resolution, font sizes are generally larger on
a Web page and the width of a Web page is generally smaller than a typed page.

Graphics, Photos, Sound, and Video clips
We can incorporate clip art, photos, and sound into your Web site. Remember that you must
own the copyright to or have permission from the copyright owner to use any photos,
graphics, or sound that you provide.
Keep in mind that while graphics greatly enhance a Web site, they also slow down the
loading of a page. You’ll want to be selective in the size and number of graphics per page.
We will accept:
    Clip art
 Your photos – digitized images on a portable device
 Stock photos can be obtained from Photodisc (http://www.photodisc.com),
PictureQuest (http://www.picturequest.com), and others. You can write down the
photo number and tell us which page each picture goes on. We can help you select
       photos.
 Sound – the following file types are acceptable:
       ● Wave files (*.wav)
       ● Midi sequencer files (*.mid)
       ● RealAudio files (*.ram, *.ra)
       ● AIFF sound files (*.aif, *.aifc, *.aiff)
       ● AU sound files (*.au, *.snd)
       ● Moving Picture Experts Group (*.mpeg), MPEG Audio-Layer 3 files (*.mp3)
       ● Microsoft Active Streaming files (*.asf)
    Animated GIFs
 Video clips – the following file types are acceptable:
       ● Flash SWF files (*.swf)
       ● Windows Media Files (*.asf, *.wm, *.wma, *.wmv, *.wmd)

Navigation
What kind of navigation system do you prefer?
___Text links - Links from the homepage to the major sections of your site. From
these sections, links to specific pages or areas on a page can be created.
___Image map – A colored bar or picture that can contain words indicating the page
you can jump to. This can appear at the top or bottom of a page. You will be
limited to the number of pages that can be referenced in the bar at one time.
___Left-side navigation bars – Set up links to all pages or just parent/child pages.
Can include buttons in place of text links.
___Table of contents page/site map – Provide a table of contents, displaying links to
          all pages in your site.
___Other – Please describe what you have in mind:
          __________________________________________________________________
