,Since the 1960's there have been numerous controlled clinical trials
concerning the relationship between congestive heart failure and Coenzyme
Q10 (CoQ10). As its name implies CoQ10 is a coenzyme that is necessary for
the proper functioning of other substances, one of the most important of which
is ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP is necessary for the production of
cellular energy. By proxy CoQ10 is likewise essential for this
process.,Clinical trials have attempted to study the relationship between
CoQ10 and many chronic diseases including, but not limited to, heart disease,
cancer and AIDS. But heart disease has gained the most attention; congestive
heart failure being one of the primary subjects. Because heart muscle cells
require so much energy to function and CoQ10 is at the core of the cellular
energy process it makes sense to suspect that congestive heart failure might
be linked to CoQ10 deficiency. With that theory in mind many studies like
the ones that follow have been conducted. These trials have been presented
in this essay in thumbnail format.,One early Japanese trial (1972) involved
197 patients with varying levels of severity of cardiac failure. The study
reported significant improvement of cardiac function supplementing with 30
mg per day of CoQ10. Another Japanese study demonstrated similar results with
38 patients also supplementing with 30 mg. In 1985 a U.S. clinical study
prescribed daily supplementation with 100 mg of the coenzyme for treatment
periods of three months for patients with low ejection fraction measurements.
The ejection fraction is the measure of the heart's ability to pump blood.
A low ejection fraction is a classic symptom of congestive heart failure.
Again, significant improvements in heart function were reported. Other
clinical trials followed prescribing the same level of supplementation with
similar results.,Studies in the early 1990s showed improvement for patients
suffering from ischemic cardiomyopathy (a low oxygen state usually due to
obstruction) with supplemental levels of 200 mg per day. Supplementing with
100 mg per day demonstrated improvement for patients suffering from
idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, an enlarged heart syndrome of unknown
cause.,One of the largest trials of the 1990s involves 641 patients randomly
divided into two groups. The first group received a placebo. The other group
received CoQ10 supplements. During the one-year follow-up period 118 patients
in the placebo group were hospitalized for heart failure compared to 73 in
the group that received the supplements.,All of the preceding trials were
relatively short-term studies. The level of improvement among patients varied
depending on how long they had been suffering from some aspect of congestive
heart failure. Through the years it has become increasing clear that the
greatest improvements were shown in patients that had suffered from their
condition the least amount of time. In other words, the longer a person had
been suffering from the disease before he or she received CoQ10 treatments
the less improvement was demonstrated. People who had received treatments
early in the development of the disease showed the most dramatic improvement
often returning to normal heart function. Long-term sufferers received less
relief and were less likely to return to full heart function. Whatever the
reasons for this disparity in health improvement, it demonstrates the
importance of receiving treatment as early as possible.,But what about
long-term studies? Do they show the same marked improvement with similar
treatment? In the short-term trials it was apparent that even high level
supplementing with CoQ10 seemed to produce no ill effects. In order to
determine if this is only true for short durations a number of long-term
studies were conducted.,In 1990 observations were published concerning 126
patients with dilated cardiomyopathy. Unlike previously noted studies this
one followed the patients' progress for six years. Long-term benefits from
CoQ10 supplementing were noticed with no harmful side effects. Similar
observations were made in a trial involving 2,664 patients treated with CoQ10
at levels up to 150 mg per day.,A 1994 study involving 424 patients with a
variety of myocardial (refers to the heart's muscle mass) diseases. Among
these conditions were the following: Valvular heart disease (pertaining to
dysfunction of heart valves), hypertension, diastolic dysfunction (failure
of the heart to properly refill itself with blood), dilated cardiomyopathy
(group of disorders where the heart muscle is weakened and enlarged and cannot
pump effectively) and ischemic cardiomyopathy (low oxygen state usually due
to obstruction of the arterial blood supply). Patients were treated with an
average of 240 mg of CoQ10 daily during their treatment period. They were
then followed-up for up to eight years with an average follow-up period of
18 months. Overall results demonstrated measurable cardiac improvements in
one month with maximum improvements at about six months. With continued CoQ10
treatment the improvement in most patients was sustained. However,
discontinuing the treatment usually resulted in a decline of cardiac function
with eventual return to pre-treatment conditions.,As always in the medical
community many more studies will need to be conducted to determine the future
of CoQ10 treatment. However, the research to date seems to support CoQ10 as
a viable treatment for many diseases that are caused or exacerbated by
inadequate production of cellular energy.,,It is a close call these days as
to whether heart disease is the number one killer of people worldwide. Most
studies seem to suggest that it is a neck and neck race between cancer and
heart disease with the results varying from country to country. So actually
there is not clear cut answer. Nevertheless, heart disease is a serious health
concern especially for those over 50 years of age. Many have been quick to
hand the crown of number one off to cancer, and from a pure statistical
perspective (at least in the United States) there is good evidence to suggest
this is the case. Nevertheless, there is at least one fact worth taking into
account. While currently three out of four men survive their first heart
attack, and six out of ten women survive their first, the life expectancy
is only a few years for those age of 70 and older. So what this means is that
the fatality rate gets pushed back a few years. If you factors in a least
a percentage of these near misses heart attack would likely be the winner
on the ominous list of the most deadly diseases. But why is it so hard to
recover? If you are having trouble giving up that those high saturated foods
and/or can't quite seem to get up the willpower to give up smoking one day
you should take the time to go down to your local hospital and walk through
the coronary care unit. What you would see would be men and women who are
a shell of their former selves, with a long road of rehab ahead of them. One
reason is that when a heart attack occurs blood flow is cut off to the heart
for a brief period of time. The longer the flow is cut off the more cell death
occurs in the heart. While the heart may regenerate scar tissue generally
forms reducing the heart flexibility. Pair this with a decline in heart
pumping strength due to age and what we have is a person who will more likely
never be able to return to form without some additional help such as
surgery. From a personal perspective many of my closest relative have had major
heart attacks and not one of them were able to return to leading the active
lifestyles they were used to. Perhaps it was the fear of having the so called
"Big One" if they overdid it. But true to form none lived over 10 years after
their initial coronary event. Now granted they weren't willing to change their
eating habits and a couple of them did smoke, but nevertheless, the countdown
to death by heart attack commenced after their first heart attack and if they
were alive today they certainly would say that in their minds heart disease
is the number one killer. If you would like to learn more about heart disease
or high cholesterols impact on heart disease,Your heart, other than your
brain, is the center of many body processes especially that it pumps the river
of your life, your blood. When not taken care properly, you may contact or
acquire a heart disease that could be a threat to your life. What is heart
disease?Heart disease , also known as cardiovascular disease, is an umbrella
term used to describe other ailments that affect the busiest muscle in the
body, the heart. Mainly, it affects older people and is hereditary in nature.
Heart diseases have become one of the major causes of deaths all over the
world. Many of the variants of the disease are considered as "silent killers"
because they show no visible symptoms especially those that are affected with
high blood pressure.Heart disease s are closely associated with blood
pressure, cholesterol, hardening of the arteries, heart attacks and strokes.
The disease occurs when the heart and vessels of the blood are not working
properly or are malfunctioning because of other factors like too much
cholesterol, fatigue and improper diets.Other Problems Related to Heart
DiseaseMany of the problems that go along with heart disease have to do with
the arteries. Arteries are not the same with veins. They are muscular blood
vessels that carry blood away from the heart. Arteriosclerosis or the
hardening of the arteries is one of the complications of heart disease. The
arteries become thick and no longer flexible that the blood could not flow
smoothly.Another problem is atherosclerosis. This occurs when there are
plaque deposits caused by the buildup of cholesterol and far in the arteries.
In turn, the arteries become narrow and the blood can not flow through. When
the heart could not get enough blood to pump, a person is suffering from angina
and could feel chest pain. Two of the most deadly complication is heart attack
and stroke. These two happens when the heart malfunctions. There is heart
attack when a blood clots in the part of the heart. On the other hand, stroke
happens when the brain is not able to get enough blood due to the clotting
of blood or bursting of blood vessel.Acquiring Heart DiseaseUnlike diseases
that are caused by virus or bacteria, heart disease is not contagious. Rather,
there are risk factors that increase the chances of a person to acquire heart
disease. One of these factors is old age. When people get older, the
functioning of the heart could not be as healthy as it uses to be while we
are young. The heart also deteriorates especially because of unhealthy
lifestyle. As earlier said, heart disease is also hereditary. When you have
family members who had the same problems, most likely you could also acquire
the same. However, some risk factors of heart disease are controllable. Among
these factors are smoking, having high blood pressure, being overweight, and
not exercising. These entire factors, if not monitored can contribute to
having a heart disease.Signs of Heart DiseaseHeart disease s do not actually
give visible symptoms or signs to people suffering it. Most of the time the
disease is detected when the patient is already feeling chest pain or already
had a heart attack of stroke. To determine whether a person has a heart disease,
one or a couple of the following procedure is initiated. Electrocardiogram
records the electric activity of the heart. Through this test, the heart
beating is determined when it is normal or not. Echocardiogram, on the other
hand, uses sound waves that bounced off the parts of the heart. These waves
create a picture of the heart, which is displayed in the monitor. With the
stress test, some cables are connected to the body and to the
electrocardiogram machine. The heart activity and how the muscles react while
the patient exercise is being monitored. Catheterization locates the narrowed
arteries through a long and thin tube that is inserted inside the body. This
tube emits a special dye. Last is the carotid artery scan, which also uses
sound waves to locate blockage in the carotid artery.,,Congratulations on
taking the first step toward better health! There are a lot of things you
can do right now to lower your risk of heart disease. The #1 best thing you
can do is to make healthy lifestyle choices.Get rid of added sugar. Sugar
damages your heart. It does nothing good for the body at all and contributes
to serious health problems in children and adults. It is usually derived from
beets and corn and manufactured in granular and syrup forms. It is added to
convenience food all the time. Avoid it like the plague! If you need sweeteners
- and most of us do - try a healthier alternative.Organic honey and maple
syrup actually contain elements that are good for you but the body reacts
the same way it does to sugar so if you are diabetic, avoid them. Stevia is
a natural sweetener that does not affect insulin levels so it is a better
choice. Recent research is showing it may have a positive affect on obesity
and hypertension as well. However, stevia can have a bit of an aftertaste
that some people dislike so you may want to shop around for a brand that you
enjoy. Ask to try a sample before you buy.The late Dr. Robert Atkins, author
of The Atkins Diet, recommends small quantities of sucralose which is often
sold as Splenda. It is certainly a lot safer for the heart than sugar, will
not affect insulin levels so diabetics can use it and it does not have the
health risks of aspartame. However, Splenda contains fillers to make it more
like sugar measure for measure. Other choices are xylitol and erythritol,
both sugar alcohols. Xylitol can cause gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea
if taken in too large a quantity. Erythritol is less likely to cause these
problems but is more costly.Put fat back into your diet! Many people are still
under the impression that fat and cholesterol are the major players in the
cause of heart disease and are still reading diet information from the '80s.
Not only were the '80s the worst fashion and hairstyle decade in a long time,

sometimes referred to as cardiovascular disease, and sadly is often
preventable. Knowing what symptoms to look for and your own choices in
lifestyle may determine whether you avoid heart disease or suffer from it.
But what is heart disease?Heart disease is really just a broad term to cover
dozens of heart related diseases such as coronary artery disease, heart
arrhythmias, congenital heart disease, and conditions caused by infections
to name a few. Symptoms and causes can vary depending on which type of you
may have, but here are some things to look for.Heart arrhythmia is when the
