EU/Europe Middle East/N Africa World
World sun oil exports have jumped 55 percent in 2 years, finding new markets in the EU, the Middle East, and North Africa. EU demand is coming from the food industry looking for alternatives to rapeseed oil, which is increasingly being used as fuel, pushing prices higher and limiting supplies available for edible uses. Sales to the Middle East and North Africa have risen in response to increased availability and a narrowing of price premiums over other oils. Consequently, imports of rapeseed, soybean, and palm oil have declined and are expected to remain at current levels in 2006/07. Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the UAE accounted for nearly 80 percent of the region’s sun oil imports in 2005/06. Algeria, which had been the largest sun oil importer in the region, is the only market exhibiting a marked decline in sun oil imports, replaced by soybean oil.
