OBESITY

Parsons

Prince

Woitovich

•Fat is a form of stored energy- used to carry

the body through periods of life when food is

not available; so in slight moderation, fat is

healthy.

•Obesity is measured as Body Mass Index (BMI),

U.S. gov’t encourage a body mass index under 25,

world health organization defines obesity as a BMI

of 30 or more.

• Obesity is being severely overweight,

usually by over 100 lbs. Obese victims

normally have unhealthy eating habits, not

food obsessions, victims have an

increased risk of: diabetes, high blood

pressure, heart desease, gallstones,

arthritis, and certain cancer- basically

shortening their life expectancy. Risks are

more for apple shaped people (pot-bellies)

than pear shaped people (thunder-thighs).

Social Effects of Obesity

• Obese prejudice has been proven to be

more severe than any other type, even

racial.

• Obesity can affect their jobs as well; they

are less likely to get hired compared to a

person of normal weight, if they get a job

they are less likely to get a promotion, and

more likely to get fired.

Think about this!!

»Genetic Factors

• 1. Adoptive siblings have same meals, but

their bodies may have huge weight

difference

• 2. Identical twins have a much stronger

correlation in weight (+.74) than fraternal

twins (+.32)

• 3. Given an obese parent, a son is 3 times

and a daughter 6 times more likely to

become obese.

• As some genes might tell our intestines

when to say “I’m full,” other genes tell our

body how quickly to burn the fat and

calories (metabolism).

• Genetics isn’t the only blame to obesity.

Just like the Flynn Effect has increased

our IQ levels, over the years the average

American weight has increased. Most

blame goes to the hormones that farmers

put in cattle, the increase of fast food

restaurants, and the increase of laziness

in the American society- mainly due to

television viewing.

• The business society has had to adapt for

this increase by increasing the width of

stadium seats, theatre, and subway cars.

Losing Weight

• After becoming fat, a person requires less food

to maintain his or her weight than he/she did to

attain it. Compared with other tissue, fat has a

lower metabolic rate- it takes less food energy to

maintain it.

• When a normal fat cell increases it grows

drastically, but when the person has lost weight,

it shrivels down losing volume, but keeping the

same surface area creating a raisin looking

thing.

Steps To Losing Weight

1. Begin only if you’re motivated and self-

disciplined

2. Minimize exposure to tempting food cues

3. Take steps to boost your metabolism

4. Be realistic and moderate

5. Eat healthy foods

6. Don’t starve all day and eat one big meal at

night

7. Beware of the binge
