Coaching Staff
Head Coach - Chris Blum
Chris Blum enters his fourth year as head coach of the Kutz-
town University baseball program, after guiding the Golden Bears
to a 39-18 overall record, and a 10-8 mark in the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division last spring.
KU claimed the PSAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA
North Atlantic Regional for the fifth-consecutive season.
In 2004, Blum’s team was 25-15, including a 17-7 mark in the
Eastern Division.
In his first season, Blum guided KU to a 25-15 overall record
and 17-7 record in the PSAC East. KU qualified for the NCAA
North Atlantic Regionals for the third-straight season, finishing
third.
In three seasons, Blum has amassed an impressive 101-49
record, including a 42-20 mark against PSAC East foes.
Prior to taking over as head coach, Blum served as assistant
coach for eight seasons as the Golden Bears developed into one of
the elite programs in the region. Kutztown won PSAC Eastern Division titles in 1997, 1999 and
2001; PSAC Championships in 1999 and 2002, and North Atlantic Regional crowns in 2001,
2002 and 2004. The Golden Bears have won 351 games in the last 11 years.
In college, Blum played at Elizabethtown College, winning multiple division titles, a MAC
Championship, and qualifying for two NCAA Division III regional tournaments. He graduated
in 1993 with a bachelor of science degree in communications.
Blum, 33, began his coaching career at Muhlenberg High School, his alma mater. He was an
assistant for four years. Prior to taking over at Kutztown, Blum had been head coach of the
Berkshire Red Sox in the newly formed Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League. Improving
from a 13-17 record its first season, Blum guided his team to the championship game in 2002,
finishing with a record of 25-12.
Assistant Coach - Chad Derck
Chad Derck begins his fourth season on the KU staff.
He came to Kutztown after serving as head coach at Shikellamy High
School from 1999-to-2002.
Derck is a 1996 graduate of Susquehanna University, where he was a
four-year letterwinner in baseball. A captain as a senior, he set the school
record for fielding percentage in 1995.
Volunteer Assistant Coach - Phil Raccuglia
Phil Raccuglia enters his second season as an assistant coach at KU.
Raccuglia began his coaching career in 1992 as head coach of the Berk-
shire Red Sox. He currently serves as secretary on the Berkshire Baseball &
Softball Executive Board. In 2001-02, Raccuglia was the head baseball coach
for the Berkshire 18 and under Showcase team, compiling a record of 62-18.
In 1999, Raccuglia was an assistant coach under Coach Blum for the Berk-
shire Red Sox, then served as assistant coach for Muhlenberg legion for three
seasons.
From 2002-04, Raccuglia was the coach of the Exeter Blue Jays in Berks County Legion,
compiling a record of 85-48-2.
Raccuglia played high school baseball at Muhlenberg, and attended Alvernia College.

Facilities
Kutztown University is blessed with some of the top athletic facilities among Division II
colleges and universities in the eastern United States. Twenty of KU’s 21 teams have their home
venues on campus.
Keystone Hall
The headquarters of the KU athletic department, Keystone Hall is the hub of indoor athletic
activity on campus. Keystone Hall houses a 3,400-seat arena, a 25-yard competition pool, the
Golden Bear Sports Medicine department, designated locker rooms for all intercollegiate athletic
teams, and a state-of-the-art fitness room. Additionally, it served as the site of a town meeting
by President George W. Bush in 2004.
North Campus Field
▼
KU's North Campus Baseball Field was
the site of the 2001 and 2002 NCAA
Division II North Atlantic Regional
Championships. The facility includes
dugouts, a hitting cage and bullpens,
while recent additions include a new
backstop, infield tarp, banners and signs
of team accomplishments, sponsorship
signs and a new scoreboard. Dimen-
sions for the field are 335 down the
lines, 380 to the power allies and 405 to
center field.
Risley Weight Room
▼
Athletes get extensive use from the free-
weight room, located on the ground floor of
Risley Hall, the original gym. The weight
room was recently renovated and expanded.
Keystone Fieldhouse
▼
Keystone Fieldhouse is home to the
KU men’s and women’s indoor track
teams, and it has been the site of
major eastern championships in re-
cent years. The field-house is used
by all teams for indoor practice and
overflow athletic events, and many
camps and clinics throughout the
year. It is also used for non-athletic
events, such as President Clinton’s
address during his visit in 1994.

spending much of the 2001 season in the majors
with both the Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates, an

turned from the injury, and has spent the past two
seasons pitching for the Pirates. He was inducted
into KU’s Hall of Fame in 2005.

Academics & Athletics at KU
The KU Academic Success Initiative, when fully implemented by the coaching staff,
provides the appropriate support, incentive, and opportunity for students to make a similar
effort toward their academic success as made toward their athletic performance. The Initia-
tive is based on the expectation that both individual and team academic performance will be
at or above the level of the overall student body. This expectation is built into the evaluation
of coaches and is an integral part of the process of awarding athletic scholarships. KU
provides athletic scholarships to support the academic pursuits of its student-athletes.
Student-athletes are expected to participate in sports because they love to do so.
Continuing indications reveal that the Initiative works and is having a profound and
measurable effect on both academic and athletic performance. Over the past 10 years, KU’s
freshman class of student-athletes has had a significantly higher grade-point average than the
overall freshman class, while the 2004-05 school year saw all student-athletes achieve a
highest-ever GPA of 2.91, surpassing the overall GPA of the Kutztown student body. Also
last year, 103 student-athletes garnered Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-
Athlete honors. During the same period, the athletic success of KU’s teams reached all-time
records.
The KU Academic Success Initiative contains the following components:
