2/5/09                                Outreach Programs                                        2/5/09: Parks & Recreation continues its quest to combat youth violence               O
                                                                                               with positive outreach programs. “Fun 2 Be Fit” is a youth obesity program
                                                                                               designed to promote physical activity and healthy eating habits. This
                                                                                               program exposes children to various forms of group exercise regimens and
                                                                                               nutritional instruction. “Fun 2 Be Fit” is offered at five locations throughout
                                                                                               the city; these locations include: Greenview Park, Katherine M. Bellfield
                                                                                               Booker Washington Heights Cultural Arts Center, Carver Lyon Elementary
                                                                                               School, Logan Elementary School and EdVenture Children’s Museum.
                                                                                               2/12/09: This week’s focus has been on collaborations that will expand                O
                                                                                               the department’s ability to reach and impact the lives of our youth. We
                                                                                               have met with the owner of Riverside Golf Center to discuss the possibility
                                                                                               of providing golf instruction for youth that will complement and expand the

1/15/09                                South Edisto Rosewood Park project   Construction has begun on the South Edisto Rosewood Park Community               O

                                                                            South Edisto Rosewood Court community will provide yet another safe
                                                                            haven for our young people. The project that will take approximately six
                                                                            months to complete will be home to community based projects, programs
                                                                            and initiatives. The programs that will include after school and summer
                                                                            activities will be developed in partnership with community leaders,
                                                                            business neighbors, park patrons and Housing Authority officials who will
                                                                            move to address the immediate concerns of the neighborhood as well as
                                                                            those of citizens in the surrounding neighborhoods.
                                                                            1/22/09: Construction of the South Edisto Rosewood Park Community
                                                                            Center is now 10% complete. Meetings with City of Columbia Housing
                                                                            Authority and other community leaders have been scheduled to discuss the
                                                                            programs to be implemented at South Edisto.
