IN MEMORIAM
Iris Mae (Beck) Dahl
August 20, 1917 - May 9, 2011
†
Though her smile is gone forever
And her hand we cannot touch
Still we have so many memories
Of the one we love so much
Her memory is our keepsake
With which we will never part
God has her in His keeping
We have her in our hearts
Iris Mae Beck was born on August 20, 1917, to William and Edith (Dudrey) Beck , in Watertown, South Da-
kota. Iris’ grandfather emigrated from Norway to the United States. The Beck name originated from the Nor-
wegian farm name of Vestre Bekk and later the name was changed to Beck.
Iris’ father, William Beck, was born in Estelline, South Dakota. He worked in mercantile stores for his uncles.
Iris’ mother, Edith (Dudrey) Beck, was born in Lake Sarah, Minnesota. Her heritage was Dutch and English.
William and Edith had one child, Iris. When Iris was four-years-old, her father died from appendicitis. There
were no other siblings. Edith worked in a mercantile store and then attended business school which led to a
job for a large government agency. Iris and her mom moved to nearby Hayti where Iris attended grade
school and high school, which still holds reunions even though the present population is 362. During summer
and vacations, Iris spent her time being cared for by her several aunties that greatly influenced Iris’ Norwe-
gian side of her heritage.
Iris met Leon Dahl during high school. His heritage is 100% American Norwegian. They married on Novem-
ber 30, 1934. The couple moved to DesMoines, Iowa, so that Leon could work for his brother who owned a
chain of ten grocery stores. Three daughters were born in DesMoines: Sharon, Connie and Marjorie. Later,
the family moved to Vancouver, Washington, where Leon worked in an aluminum plant. One son, Leon, Jr.,
was born there. The next move was to Gresham, Oregon, where Leon worked in Portland for United Grocer-
ies. He retired in 1975 and they traveled and enjoyed living in Palm Springs, California, and Carson City, Ne-
vada, plus trips to South Dakota and other places. They lived in Carson City about 20 years.
Iris was an avid reader. During her busy life she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution,
Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War (1861-1865), Order of the Eastern Star #149, and the Retail
Clerks Union Local #1092. Iris was also a member of Daughters of Norway, Queen Maud Lodge #42, here in
Carson City, Nevada, for three years from April of 2008 until her death. Iris loved her Norwegian heritage and
being a member of the Lodge. When she arrived at meetings she would head for our Scandinavian library
tables to assist there or anywhere else she was needed. Her memory of her life was outstanding and she
was a very good conversationalist. Iris died on May 9, 2011. The Lodge draped the charter for one month in
loving memory of her. Pastor Stan Pesis and Eucharistic Ministers, Vicki Hamilton and Nellie Revelle, of St.
Paul’s Lutheran Family, brought communion several times to Iris and Leon. Pastor Stan also gave the bless-
ing of her ashes which are now placed in the family plot in Estelline, South Dakota.
Iris and Leon were married for 76 years. Leon was born March 30, 1917, and is 94 years young! Longevity
runs in the family as his mother died at age 103. He continues to live in Carson City and doesn’t go to the
doctors because “they always find something wrong!” He is a member of Sons of Norway in Reno, Nevada.
Iris and Leon’s three daughters are Sherry Cairns (Cumming, GA), Connie Anoshian (Henderson, NV), and
Marjorie Shapiro (Eugene, OR). Their son, Leon Dahl, Jr. lives in Veneta, OR. They have a total of 16
grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. We will miss this wonderful lady.
