Innovation has always been key to pharmaceutical success and for the first time this is happening beyond the biggest pharmaceutical vendors with more than 50% of new drugs and molecular entities being approved from smaller biotechs. This has led to an increase in merger and acquisition (M&A) activity as the larger pharmaceutical companies try to plug the innovation gap, bulk up their portfolios and enter new markets by using their financial muscle to buy smaller innovators.
