Introduction

Cancer is currently the No.1 killer of all diseases in our western society.

There are a lot of controversy between conventional treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation) and

natural treatment (nutrition, supplements and healthy living). You can be kept busy for hours with

examples of the fights between the conventional doctors with chemical treatment and holistic doctors with

their natural approach.

With cancer treatment there is a place for both the external and internal approaches, since a cancerous

growth can no longer be strictly regarded as part of the whole, due to its autonomous nature.

We now realize that almost every disease has a nutritional basis.

However, you are here because you have a choice and whether you die earlier than supposed to, or live a

long, healthy life, you alone have to make the choice how you want to address and conquer your cancer.

Warning:

―Cancer is a very emotional experience, but it is not a death sentence. You have to stay calm and not be

influenced by the oncologist or your family. For you and your family, fear can be provoked due to the

unknown territory and you might choose the conventional route, because the oncologist suggests it.‖

When an oncologist suggest the normal conventional treatment for your specific cancer (surgery,

chemotherapy, radiation), ask him/her about his/her success ratio and whether you can talk to at least 10

of his/her cancer patients, which are still alive after 5 years of initial treatment.

Whether you have Cancer, already received treatment or suspect that you might have it, then this book

might help you to make a wise choice, as you are in charge of your own life and no-one else.

(Read all about conventional and natural treatments in section 8)

There are numerous causes for cancer, but the actual cause is hard to determine. You have to act fast to

stop any further cancer growth and alter your lifestyle to reverse the damage already done by the cancer.

No matter which treatment you choose, the healthy lifestyle promoted in this book will be to your benefit.

If you suspect cancer through self examination, first try to find a respectable oncologist to make

the diagnosis.

If Cancer is diagnosed, make sure to get a 2nd and even a 3rd and 4th opinion.

In the meantime you can immediately start with the detoxifying process described in this book.

Follow the detoxifying process with the suggested supplementation regimen and healthy diet.

You will not die, but by following this method you will give yourself the time to decide which

treatment you want to take. Read as much and widely as you can about holistic and natural healing

of cancer vs. conventional treatment (Section 8 highlights the most important differences between

these treatments).

This book is a compilation of the necessary information from different scientific evidence to provide some

realistic and logical answers in layman terms on how to address cancer. Making an informed decision can

literally mean the choice between life and death.

A healthy lifestyle can prevent most cancers. Please do not lose hope, as you can take charge of your own

health and reverse the damaging effect of cancer.

What is Pancreatic Cancer?

1. Definition of pancreatic cancer

A disease in which malignant (cancer) cells are found in the tissues of the pancreas. Also called

exocrine cancer.

2. The Pancreas

The pancreas is an organ that is about 6 inches long. It‘s located deep in your belly between your

stomach and backbone. Your liver, intestine, and other organs surround your pancreas.

This picture shows the pancreas and nearby organs.

This picture shows the head, body, and tail of the pancreas.

The widest part of the pancreas is called the head. The head of the pancreas is closest to the small

intestine. The middle section is called the body, and the thinnest part is called the tail.

The pancreas makes pancreatic juices. These juices contain enzymes that help break down food. The

juices flow through a system of ducts leading to the main pancreatic duct. The pancreatic juices flow

through the main duct to the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine.

The pancreas is also a gland that makes insulin and other hormones. These hormones enter the

bloodstream and travel throughout the body. They help the body use or store the energy that comes

from food. For example, insulin helps control the amount of sugar in the blood.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 5

3. Cancer Cells

Cancer begins in cells, the building blocks that make up tissues. Tissues make up the pancreas and the

other organs of the body.

Normal cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When normal cells grow old or

get damaged, they die, and new cells take their place.

Sometimes, this process goes wrong. New cells form when the body doesn‘t need them, and old or

damaged cells don‘t die as they should. The buildup of extra cells often forms a mass of tissue called a

growth or tumor.

Tumors in the pancreas can be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer). Benign tumors are not as

harmful as malignant tumors:

Benign tumors (such as cysts):

o are usually not a threat to life

o can be removed and usually don‘t grow back

o don‘t invade the tissues around them

o don‘t spread to other parts of the body

Malignant growths:

o may be a threat to life

o sometimes can be removed but can grow back

o can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs

o can spread to other parts of the body

Pancreatic cancer can invade other tissues, shed cancer cells into the abdomen, or spread to other

organs:

Invade: A malignant pancreatic tumor can grow and invade organs next to the pancreas, such as

the stomach or small intestine.

Shed: Cancer cells can shed (break off) from the main pancreatic tumor. Shedding into the

abdomen may lead to new tumors forming on the surface of nearby organs and tissues. The doctor

may call these seeds or implants. The seeds can cause an abnormal buildup of fluid in the

abdomen (ascites).

Spread: Cancer cells can spread by breaking away from the original tumor. They can spread

through the blood vessels to the liver and lungs. In addition, pancreatic cancer cells can spread

through lymph vessels to nearby lymph nodes. After spreading, the cancer cells may attach to

other tissues and grow to form new tumors that may damage those tissues.

4. Risk Factors

When you get a diagnosis of cancer, it‘s natural to wonder what may have caused the disease. Doctors

can‘t always explain why one person gets pancreatic cancer and another doesn‘t. However, we do

know that people with certain risk factors may be more likely than others to develop cancer of the

pancreas. A risk factor is something that may increase the chance of getting a disease.

Studies have found the following risk factors for cancer of the pancreas:

Smoking: Smoking tobacco is the most important risk factor for pancreatic cancer. People who

smoke tobacco are more likely than nonsmokers to develop this disease. Heavy smokers are

most at risk.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 6

Diabetes: People with diabetes are more likely than other people to develop pancreatic

cancer.

Family history: Having a mother, father, sister, or brother with pancreatic cancer increases

the risk of developing the disease.

Inflammation of the pancreas: Pancreatitis is a painful inflammation of the pancreas.

Having pancreatitis for a long time may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.

Obesity: People who are overweight or obese are slightly more likely than other people to

develop pancreatic cancer.

Many other possible risk factors are under active study. For example, researchers are studying

whether a diet high in fat (especially animal fat) or heavy drinking of alcoholic beverages may increase

the risk of pancreatic cancer. Another area of active research is whether certain genes increase the

risk of disease.

Many people who get pancreatic cancer have none of these risk factors, and many people who have

known risk factors don‘t develop the disease.

Genes -- Some people have genes that make them more prone to developing cancer. The most common

gene defects are found in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. These genes normally produce proteins that

protect you from cancer. But if a parent passes you a defective gene, you have an increased risk of

cancer.

Although your genes are a factor in your cancer risk, it is not your genes that dictate your health but

rather the expression of them, and that depends on which genes you "turn on or off" with your lifestyle

and emotional state.

In other words, you have more power over your health than your genetics does!

Risk factors you Can change:.

Obesity

Obesity and physical inactivity may account for 25 to 30 percent of several major cancers—

colon, breast (postmenopausal), endometrial, kidney, and cancer of the esophagus.

Preventing weight gain can reduce the risk of many cancers. Experts recommend that people

establish habits of healthy eating and physical activity early in life to prevent overweight and

obesity. Those who are already overweight or obese are advised to avoid additional weight gain,

and to lose weight through a low-calorie diet and exercise. Even a weight loss of only 5 to 10

percent of total weight can provide health benefits. (3)

Insulin Resistance (Part of overweight and Obesity)

A high level of insulin also leads to the growth of tumors in the body. Several clinical studies

have shown a high prevalence of cancer in people with Insulin Resistance Syndrome. Certain

cancers, especially breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer have been linked to insulin

resistance. (4)

High fat diet

Fats accelerate the atherosclerotic narrowing of the arteries, which restricts blood flow and

oxygenation of tissues. Low oxygen tension in the cells promotes the growth of cancer cells,

which require an anaerobic environment for growth. Properly oxygenated tissues are

unfavourable for the growth of cancer cells.

Animal fats also contain a high concentration of arachidonic acid, the fatty acid precursor of

prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). This prostaglandin is known to have many harmful effects in the body,

including the fact that it is required by cancer cells to maintain their uncontrolled growth.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 7

IMPORTANT: The increased consumption of olive oil, vegetables and fruit was associated with a

significantly reduced cancer risk, whereas margarine was associated with an increased risk.

Clearly it is not the total fat content of the diet that is important but the type of fat.

The protective effect of olive oil is possibly linked to the fact that it contains squalene and polyphenols,

which are known to increase tissue oxygenation, which is unfavourable for the growth of cancer cells.

Margarine is hydrogenated vegetable oil, which contains trans-fatty acids. These are unnaturally

structured fatty acids that can adversely alter the physical and chemical properties of cell membranes.

Environmental chemicals, especially pesticides:

Many of the chemicals and pesticides are oestrogen ―mimickers", which means that they can partly

take over the role of oestrogen in the body. This can contribute to the patient‘s total oestrogen

load. Estrogens have a stimulatory effect on cells to multiply rapidly and therefore promote cancer.

(] Natl Cancer Inst 1993, 85: 648)

Lack of nutrients, especially antioxidants:

A lack of antioxidants leave the cells unprotected against free radicals, which can promote cancer

growth.

Heavy-metal poisoning:

Mercury, lead, cadmium and other heavy metals, especially in drinking water, are an important

cause of ill health, including cancer. The cancer patient needs to be fully aware of this and needs to

take stringent precautionary measures to limit exposure to these dangerous metals.

We must assume that all drinking water is contaminated and discard the idea that bottled drinking

water or "natural" waters in fountains and streams are pure. This is not necessarily so.

It is of the utmost importance to install and use a good water filter to make sure you rule out any

water contamination.

Alcohol appears to have a strong influence on the development of cancer. According to a recent

publication, one drink a day increases the risk by 40%, while two drinks increase the risk by 70%.

(5)

Fructose - another form of sugar in many processed foods and soft drinks, primarily used

because it is supposedly low glycemic value. Fructose, however, are processed by the

liver and a large portion of it is converted to triglycerides which contribute to the narrowing

of the arteries. Narrowed arteries deprive the tissue and cells of oxygen, an ideal

environment for cancer growth.

pH Balance – An acidic body means a weak immune system. Through proper nutrition you can

alkalise your body and your cells, stimulating your immune system for ultimate performance.

Cancer thrives in an acidic environment. Our modern lifestyle and diets causes‘ high acid levels.

Smoking

If you ever wondered why smoking is bad for your health, you might be surprised to recognise the

names of some of the deadly chemicals found in tobacco smoke, which can all be triggers to cancer

in the human body. Secondary smoke is just as bad. The chemicals found in tobacco smoke

include:

Tar

Cigarette smoke contains tar, which is made up of more than 4,000 chemicals, including over 60

known to cause cancer. Some of these substances cause heart and lung diseases. Some are known

for their adverse effects on bones and skin. Once inhaled, smoke condenses and about 70 per cent

of the tar in the smoke is deposited in the smoker‘s lungs.

Benzene (petrol additive)

A colorless cyclic hydrocarbon obtained from coal and petroleum, used as a solvent in fuel and in

chemical manufacture – and contained in cigarette smoke. It is a known carcinogen and is

associated with leukemia.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 8

Formaldehyde (embalming fluid)

A colorless liquid, highly poisonous, used to preserve dead bodies – also found in cigarette smoke,

known to cause cancer, respiratory, skin and gastrointestinal problems.

Ammonia

It is found everywhere in the environment but is very toxic in combination with certain elements.

Acetone

It is a fragrant volatile liquid used as a solvent – found in cigarette smoke.

Carbon Monoxide (CO)

An odorless, tasteless and poisonous gas, rapidly fatal in large amounts – it‘s the same gas that

comes out of car exhausts and is the main gas in cigarette smoke, formed when the cigarette is lit.

Nicotine

It is an addictive drug as powerful as cocaine or heroin. It alters the brain as well as a person‘s

behavior and mood. It is also used in insecticides.

Arsenic

It is a potent deadly poison, which can burn your lips and can give you bad breath. Arsenic is taken

up by tobacco leaves from the soil. Although, arsenic in cigarette smoke is present in traces,

arsenic concentration can increase over time in the smoker‘s body.

Vinyl chloride

It is used to make vinyl products. Short-term exposure causes dizziness, headaches and tiredness.

Long-term exposure can lead to cancer and liver damage.

Polonium 210

It is a radioactive substance that requires special handling techniques when studied in labs. It can

cause cancer of the liver and bladder, stomach ulcers and leukemia amongst other diseases.

Acrolein

It is an extremely toxic substance used to manufacture acrylic acid. It is considered a possible

human carcinogen and it irritates the lungs and is the cause of emphysema.

Hydrogen cyanide

It is a deadly toxic poison used to kill rats. If breathed in small doses, it can cause

headaches, dizziness and weakness.

Toluene

It is used to manufacture paint, paint thinners, nail varnish and adhesives. Low – moderate levels

can provoke tiredness, weakness, loss of appetite and memory loss.

The above chemicals such as ammonia, nicotine, lead, benzene and arsenic in cigarette smoke are not

only harmful for the smoker, but also for those who inhale the secondhand smoke.

In fact smoking is the biggest cause of preventable death in the world.

Refined carbohydrates: These come in many well-known forms such as sugar, cakes, sweets,

soft drinks and practically all other refined foods. What they all have in common is a high

Glycaemic Value, meaning that after consumption of these "foods", blood glucose and insulin levels

rise to unnaturally high levels, which may promote the development of cancer.

Cancer thrives on sugar and any high carbohydrate diet will be like fuel for cancer growth.

Excess insulin induces an abnormally large number of insulin receptors in body tissue, while excess

body fat (arising from the overconsumption of high Glycaemic Index carbohydrates), keeps

producing extra estrogens, thus adding to the total estrogen load. Sugar can suppress

your immune system and impair your defenses against infectious disease such as cancer.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 9

Immune System

Cancer can only thrive in an environment where the immune system is down.

There are a lot of reasons why your Immune System goes down, but the fact of the matter is that

we want to restore its fighting abilities as fast as possible through good nutrition, supplements,

exercise, sleep and a positive attitude.

Lifestyle Research

The following is a breakdown of the overall percentages of lifestyle factors contributing to cancer:

Poor diet and obesity 30%

Smoking 30%

Genetics 10%

Carcinogens in the workplace 5%

Family History 5%

Lack of exercise 5%

Viruses 5%

Alcohol 3%

Reproductive factors 3%

Socioeconomic Status 3%

Environmental pollution 2%

Many experts believe that what these risk factors have in common is that they increase the body‘s

exposure to free radicals. They theorize that damage from free radicals is an important factor in

causing the uncontrolled cellular growth that is characteristic of cancer.

Poor oxygen delivery to the cells and tissue is also a contributing factor which encourages cancer

growth.

Summary:

If a person corrects his/her diet and further prevents nutritional deficiencies by regularly taking the

correct vitamin and mineral supplements while avoiding cancer risk factors, he/she can drastically

reduce the risk of getting cancer, or improve the chances of a full recovery from cancer.

5. Symptoms

Early cancer of the pancreas often doesn‘t cause symptoms. When the cancer grows larger, you may

notice one or more of these common symptoms:

Dark urine, pale stools, and yellow skin and eyes from jaundice

Pain in the upper part of your belly

Pain in the middle part of your back that doesn‘t go away when you shift your position

Nausea and vomiting

Stools that float in the toilet

Also, advanced cancer may cause these general symptoms:

Weakness or feeling very tired

Loss of appetite or feelings of fullness

Weight loss for no known reason

These symptoms may be caused by pancreatic cancer or by other health problems. People with these

symptoms should tell their doctor so that problems can be diagnosed and treated as early as possible.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 10

6. Diagnosis

If you have symptoms that suggest cancer of the pancreas, your doctor will try to find out what‘s

causing the problems.

You may have blood or other lab tests. Also, you may have one or more of the following tests:

Physical exam: Your doctor feels your abdomen to check for changes in areas near the

pancreas, liver, gallbladder, and spleen. Your doctor also checks for an abnormal buildup of

fluid in the abdomen. Also, your skin and eyes may be checked for signs of jaundice.

CT scan: An x-ray machine linked to a computer takes a series of detailed pictures of your

pancreas, nearby organs, and blood vessels in your abdomen. You may receive an injection of

contrast material so your pancreas shows up clearly in the pictures.

Also, you may be asked to drink water so your stomach and duodenum show up better. On the

CT scan, your doctor may see a tumor in the pancreas or elsewhere in the abdomen.

Ultrasound: Your doctor places the ultrasound device on your abdomen and slowly moves it

around. The ultrasound device uses sound waves that can‘t be heard by humans. The sound

waves make a pattern of echoes as they bounce off internal organs. The echoes create a

picture of your pancreas and other organs in the abdomen. The picture may show a tumor or

blocked ducts.

EUS: Your doctor passes a thin, lighted tube (endoscope) down your throat, through your

stomach, and into the first part of the small intestine. An ultrasound probe at the end of the

tube sends out sound waves that you can‘t hear.

The waves bounce off tissues in your pancreas and other organs. As your doctor slowly

withdraws the probe from the intestine toward the stomach, the computer creates a picture of

the pancreas from the echoes.

The picture can show a tumor in the pancreas. It can also show how deeply the cancer has

invaded the blood vessels.

Some doctors use the following tests also:

ERCP: The doctor passes an endoscope through your mouth and stomach, down into the first

part of your small intestine. Your doctor slips a smaller tube through the endoscope into the

bile ducts and pancreatic ducts. (See picture of ducts.)

After injecting dye through the smaller tube into the ducts, the doctor takes x-ray pictures. The

x-rays can show whether the ducts are narrowed or blocked by a tumor or other condition.

MRI: A large machine with a strong magnet linked to a computer is used to make detailed

pictures of areas inside your body.

PET scan: You‘ll receive an injection of a small amount of radioactive sugar. The radioactive

sugar gives off signals that the PET scanner picks up. The PET scanner makes a picture of the

places in your body where the sugar is being taken up.

Cancer cells show up brighter in the picture because they take up sugar faster than normal

cells do. A PET scan may show a tumor in the pancreas. It can also show cancer that has

spread to other parts of the body.

Needle biopsy: The doctor uses a thin needle to remove a small sample of tissue from the

pancreas. EUS or CT may be used to guide the needle. A pathologist uses a microscope to look

for cancer cells in the tissue.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 11

7. Staging

If cancer of the pancreas is diagnosed, your doctor needs to learn the extent (stage) of the disease to

help you choose the best treatment.

Staging is a careful attempt to find out the following:

The size of the tumor in the pancreas

Whether the tumor has invaded nearby tissues

Whether the cancer has spread, and if so, to what parts of the body

When cancer of the pancreas spreads, the cancer cells may be found in nearby lymph nodes or the

liver. Cancer cells may also be found in the lungs or in fluid collected from the abdomen.

When cancer spreads from its original place to another part of the body, the new tumor has the same

kind of abnormal cells and the same name as the original (primary) tumor. For example, if pancreatic

cancer spreads to the liver, the cancer cells in the liver are actually pancreatic cancer cells.

The disease is metastatic pancreatic cancer, not liver cancer. It‘s treated as pancreatic cancer, not as

liver cancer. Doctors sometimes call the new tumor in the liver ―distant‖ disease.

To learn whether pancreatic cancer has spread, your doctor may order CT scans or EUS.

Also, a surgeon may look inside your abdomen with a laparoscope (a thin, tube-like device that has a

light and a lens for seeing inside the body).

The surgeon inserts the laparoscope through a small incision in your belly button.

The surgeon will look for any signs of cancer inside your abdomen. You‘ll need general anesthesia for

this exam.

These are the stages of cancer of the pancreas:

Stage I: The tumor is found only in the pancreas.

Stage II: The tumor has invaded nearby tissue but not nearby blood vessels. The cancer may

have spread to the lymph nodes.

Stage III: The tumor has invaded nearby blood vessels.

Stage IV: The cancer has spread to a distant organ, such as the liver or lungs.

8. Treatment

Treatment options for people with cancer of the pancreas are surgery, chemotherapy, targeted

therapy, and radiation therapy. You‘ll probably receive more than one type of treatment.

The treatment that‘s right for you depends mainly on the following:

The location of the tumor in your pancreas

Whether the disease has spread

Your age and general health

At this time, cancer of the pancreas can be cured only when it‘s found at an early stage (before it has

spread) and only if surgery can completely remove the tumor. For people who can‘t have surgery,

other treatments may be able to help them live longer and feel better.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 12

You may have a team of specialists to help plan your treatment. Your doctor may refer you to a

specialist, or you may ask for a referral. Specialists who treat cancer of the pancreas include

surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and gastroenterologists. Your health care team

may also include an oncology nurse.

For help relieving or reducing pain, you may work with a specially trained doctor, a nurse, a palliative

care team, or another pain control specialist.

Your health care team can describe your treatment choices, the expected results of each, and the

possible side effects. Because cancer treatments often damage healthy cells and tissues, side effects

are common.

These side effects depend on many factors, including the type and extent of treatment. Side effects

may not be the same for each person, and they may even change from one treatment session to the

next. Before treatment starts, ask your health care team about possible side effects and how

treatment may change your normal activities.

You and your health care team can work together to develop a treatment plan that meets your needs.

a) Surgery

Surgery may be an option for people with an early stage of pancreatic cancer. The surgeon usually

removes only the part of the pancreas that has cancer. But, in some cases, the whole pancreas may

be removed.

The type of surgery depends on the location of the tumor in the pancreas. Surgery to remove a tumor

in the head of the pancreas is called a Whipple procedure. The Whipple procedure is the most common

type of surgery for pancreatic cancer. You and your surgeon may talk about the types of surgery and

which may be right for you.

In addition to part or your entire pancreas, the surgeon usually removes the following nearby tissues:

Duodenum

Gallbladder

Common bile duct

Part of your stomach

Also, the surgeon may remove your spleen and nearby lymph nodes.

Surgery for pancreatic cancer is a major operation. You will need to stay in the hospital for one to two

weeks afterward. Your health care team will watch for signs of bleeding, infection, or other problems.

It takes time to heal after surgery, and the time needed to recover is different for each person. You

may have pain or discomfort for the first few days. Medicine can help control your pain. Before

surgery, you should discuss the plan for pain relief with your health care team. After surgery, they can

adjust the plan if you need more pain control.

It‘s common to feel weak or tired for a while. You may need to rest at home for one to three months

after leaving the hospital.

After surgery, it may be hard to digest food. For four to six weeks after Whipple surgery, you may feel

bloated or full, and you may have nausea and vomiting. A dietitian can help you change your diet to

reduce your discomfort.

Problems with eating usually go away within three months.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 13

b) Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. Most people with pancreatic cancer get chemotherapy.

For early pancreatic cancer, chemotherapy is usually given after surgery, but in some cases, it‘s given

before surgery. For advanced cancer, chemotherapy is used alone, with targeted therapy, or with

radiation therapy.

Chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer is usually given by vein (intravenous). The drugs enter the

bloodstream and travel throughout your body.

Chemotherapy may be given in an outpatient part of the hospital, at the doctor‘s office, or at home.

Rarely, you may need to stay in the hospital.

The side effects depend mainly on which drugs are given and how much. Chemotherapy kills fast-

growing cancer cells, but the drugs can also harm normal cells that divide rapidly:

Blood cells: When drugs lower the levels of healthy blood cells, you‘re more likely to get

infections, bruise or bleed easily, and feel very weak and tired. Your health care team will

check for low levels of blood cells.

If your levels are low, your health care team may stop the chemotherapy for a while or reduce

the dose of the drug. There are also medicines that can help your body make new blood cells.

Cells in hair roots: Chemotherapy may cause hair loss. If you lose your hair, it will grow back

after treatment, but the color and texture may be changed.

Cells that line the digestive tract: Chemotherapy can cause a poor appetite, nausea and

vomiting, diarrhea, or mouth and lip sores. Your health care team can give you medicines and

suggest other ways to help with these problems. They usually go away when treatment ends.

Some drugs used for pancreatic cancer also may cause tingling or numbness in your hands and feet.

Your health care team can suggest ways to control many of these side effects.

c) Targeted Therapy

People with cancer of the pancreas who can‘t have surgery may receive a type of drug called targeted

therapy along with chemotherapy.

Targeted therapy slows the growth of pancreatic cancer. It also helps prevent cancer cells from

spreading. The drug is taken by mouth.

Side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, a rash, and shortness of breath.

d) Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. It can be given along with other

treatments, including chemotherapy.

The radiation comes from a large machine. The machine aims beams of radiation at the cancer in the

abdomen. You‘ll go to a hospital or clinic 5 days a week for several weeks to receive radiation therapy.

Each session takes about 30 minutes.

Although radiation therapy is painless, it may cause other side effects. The side effects include nausea,

vomiting, or diarrhea. You may also feel very tired. Your health care team can suggest ways to treat or

control these side effects.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 14

8. (a) Conventional Cancer Treatment

a) Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses chemical compounds (drugs) designed to (harm the cancer cells more than the host‘s

normal cells). This is not an unreasonable rationale behind the treatment, as there are metabolic and

other differences between normal and cancer cells that can possibly be exploited for this purpose.

Some of these drugs are spin-off products of the chemical warfare compounds developed during the two

world wars. These poisonous drugs are now used in more than 70% of cancer patients, either alone or in

combination with other treatments. Chemotherapy may be useful in some conditions (such as testicular

cancer, and leukemia), but most clinicians now recognise its severe limitations, especially when used

alone.

Dr Abel, a well-respected scientist from the Heidelberg Tumor Centre in Germany, has published a

comprehensive survey of the world literature on the survival rate of chemotherapy treated cancer

patients.

This study shows a survival rate of only 3% of patients with epithelial cancers (lung, colon,

breast, prostate, etc), which kill 80% of all cancer patients.

Often the side effects associated with chemotherapy adversely affect the quality of the patient‘s life. Some

of the more serious side effects include severe heart muscle damage, gastrointestinal damage, nausea,

anemia, hair loss and lethal suppression of the immune system.

The newer generation of chemotherapeutic agents is better tolerated and short-term results appear to be

somewhat better, but the longer-term survival rates remain much the same.

Chemotherapy severely weakens the immune system, which is extremely serious, as the

patient developed cancer in the first place as a result of a functionally weak immune system.

One of the main reasons, therefore, for the long-term failure of chemotherapy is the adverse effect that it

has on the immune system, which virtually ensures ultimate failure of the treatment.

New Research on Cancer screening showed conventional treatment methods to be significantly flawed.

b) Radiotherapy

Up to 50% of all cancer patients are treated with radiotherapy. It may be used on its own or as a back-up

to surgery or chemotherapy. Like the other treatment techniques, it comes with its own range of side

effects and failures. Moreover, there is no proof that such combinations bring any real long-term

advantage to the cancer patient.

Radiotherapy can cause other types of cancer in the body, according to Med Oncol, 1994, 11:121.

Radiation and chemotherapy are poisons. They poison and kill both cancer cells and healthy

cells. Plus, these treatments are themselves carcinogenic.

There is a lot of rock solid evidence which stack up against conventional cancer treatment, due to their

poor results, very bad side effects, unbelievable high cost and the enormous emotional strain on the

patient, but you are here to conquer cancer and not to hear about all the politics of the pharmaceutical

Goliaths of the world.

8. (b) Alternative Cancer Treatment

What is Alternative Therapy?

The phrase alternative therapy is used to describe a wide range of treatments which, generally, are not

available from conventional doctors.

In the treatment of cancer, conventional medicine includes surgery, chemotherapy (the use of drugs), and

radiation. By contrast, alternative therapy includes nutritional supplements, enzymes, diet, detoxification,

and change in life style, stress control, prevention, and biofeedback.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 15

Which is best? That depends on one's view regarding the nature of cancer. Conventional practitioners

view cancer as the tumor, whereas alternative doctors see the tumor as merely the symptom of the

cancer. They are more interested in what caused it to appear in the first place.

Conventional medicine believes that anything that removes or reduces the tumor is good, even if it

weakens the body in the process. Since practitioners of alternative medicine focus on the cause of the

tumor, they believe that anything which helps the body eliminate the tumor is progress.

The immune system is the front-line defense of the body against cancer. Although there have been some

notable improvements in chemotherapy and radiation technologies, these approaches impact the immune

system and many believe they can actually cause cancer if one does not detoxify the body and rebuild the

immune system after these approaches were used. Typically nutritional supplementation and other forms

of alternative therapy help to strengthen the immune system and help the body to overcome cancer.

Example

Perfect Balance for Optimal Health and Strong Immune System

Consider these 2 pools. The one pool is in perfect condition, pure, healthy, clear water and the other pool

is ―not well‖.

What do you think is the difference between the pools?

The clear pool has a perfect pH Balance, perfectly maintained circulation system and clean bottom.

The murky pool‘s pH is acidic, the circulation system does not work and the bottom is dirty with all

kinds of debris.

If you should add a lot of chemicals to the dark pool, do you think that it will solve the problem? NO!

Only with the right treatment of specific salts, a well maintained circulation system and a good cleanup of

the bottom can this pool be saved. This cleansing process does not happen overnight, but takes a few

days to get the pH balanced and the water to filter out all the dead algae.

Our bodies are exactly the same. We do not get cancer by doing nothing. Cancer is the result of

mismanagement of a perfect machine, which only need the best, natural, clean fuel to give top

performance.

The damage done to the body over many years cannot be rectified overnight. It will take anything from 6

months to a year to reverse the damage and to clear the system. You do not have to die because of

negligence. You have a choice.

Choice one: Try to kill the Cancer with chemicals (―chemotherapy‖), as in the case of the dirty pool.

Choice two: Implement a sane, logic regimen by eliminating anything which could have caused the

cancer in the first place (like poor nutrition, smoking, alcohol, toxins, etc.).

Implement the type of lifestyle which can rectify the damage – Good healthy nutrition, supplements,

exercise and enough sleep to detoxify your body and to boost your immune system so that it can attack

the cancer and reverse the damage.

One has only to realise what causes the cancer in the first place, to know that natural treatment is the

only answer to real recovery.

As mentioned in section 4, there are a lot of triggers which can stimulate the rapid growth of cancerous

cells. All of us have cancer cells, but it is kept under control by a good immune system.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 16

Cancer tumors are feeding themselves by stealing nutrients from the rest of the body. As a result, the rest

of the body slowly starves. This is known as wasting [or cachexia].

It is estimated that nearly 40% of all cancer patients do not die of cancer at all. They die of starvation, or

of malnutrition induced by the treatments that were supposed to cure them. ...

We know that cancer tumors grow best in an anaerobic (lack of oxygen), acidic environment.

So, you should be able to kill the tumors with a diet that increases the supply of oxygen and

cause the body to become more alkaline. Although there are several alternative cancer

treatments, we focus on the simple, most cost effective and highly workable method to, not

just kill the cancer, but also to enhance allover well being.

9. Successes of Alternative Cancer Treatment (Testimonials)

This is just a few clips from thousands of testimonials to confirm the fact that the natural method of

Cancer Treatment works far better than conventional treatment.

Unfortunately most Medici does not want to recognise the power of natural healing of cancer, because

they were not trained to do it.

Be very clear about something, disease, especially cancer, never, ever just sneaks up on people and strikes them

down. It does not happen that way. It takes a long time and a great deal of neglect and abuse for cancer to occur.

Cancer Healing: Case 1

Dr Satillaro - prostate cancer

Treated with a macrobiotic diet

At the time of his diagnosis, Dr Satillaro was a 47—year—old medical doctor working in a large hospital in

Philadelphia. The following is a summary of events which took place between 1978-1981, as presented in his

book (Recalled by Life). In June 1978, Dr Satillaro was medically diagnosed with prostate cancer, stage 1V (D),

which had spread (metastasized) to the skull, shoulder, spine, sternum and ribs. This diagnosis was confirmed

by a bone scan and subsequent surgery.

The patient was told by his medical advisors that the prognosis was bad and that he only had a ‗few years to

live‘. As a medical doctor himself, he knew that those few years would be a miserable and painful slide to death.

(He was already suffering from acute back pain for which he was taking large doses of various painkillers.)

Dr Satillaro immediately underwent surgery and began estrogen treatment to try to limit the spread of the

disease. Compounding his problems was a recent severe injury to his right testicle, which necessitated the

surgical removal of both testicles (orchiectomy).

A critical review of his situation revealed very little reason for optimism. At most, 15-25% of men with prostate

cancer stage IV (D) survive for more than five years with standard treatment (orchiectomy and estrogens), and

in his case it was virtually certain that he would be dead long before that time.

A change in his lifestyle

Until his diagnosis Dr Satillaro (who had never married) ate all three daily meals in restaurants, where he had

meat with every meal, from bacon and sausage in the morning to prime rib at night. He had no understanding

of the importance of nutrition in disease, nor did he receive any formal training during his training as a medical

doctor.

As a medical doctor, Dr Satillaro knew his condition was serious. He experienced deep depression and

despondency with increasing frequency, and continued to suffer from severe pain, for which he used increasing

quantities of painkillers.

Then, one day, as he was driving home from the hospital, he gave a lift to two hitchhikers. The discussion in the

car eventually turned to his disease and desperate condition. One of the hitchhikers said, ‗You know, you don‘t

have to die, doc. Cancer isn‘t all that hard to cure.‘ Naturally, Satillaro dismissed this as the idle talk and

foolishness of a youthful layman. The youth, who had introduced himself as McLean, went on to say that cancer

is the natural result of a bad diet, consisting of lots of red meat, eggs, refined foods (sugar and white flour) and

foods high in chemical additives.

All of which was nonsense to the medical mind of Dr Satillaro, but as he had nothing to lose, he agreed to meet

members of the Macrobiotic Society in Philadelphia and attend some of their lectures and discussions. Through

the Society he met Michio Kushi, author of several books on macrobiotics. After examining Satillaro, Kushi

declared that he could be fully cured of cancer if he followed a strict macrobiotic diet. Kushi also explained that

many people had been cured of cancer, in spite of the fact that they only come for macrobiotic treatment once

everything else had failed.

Macrobiotics is based on the concept that good health depends on a balance of the opposing life forces (Yin and

Yang), and all foods are classified as either Yin or Yang, rather than as protein, carbohydrate and fat, for

example.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 18

In his book Dr Satillaro describes the profound doubt and conflict that now raged in his mind. His analytical

mind and medical training dictated that he could not accept that these people — most of whom had no medical

or scientific training - could have an answer to a problem that has baffled the greatest scientific minds for so

long.

There was nothing in his training or his experience that could help him deal with the mystical and philosophical

aspects of macrobiotics.

At the point of abandoning his interest, he noticed the name of a medical colleague in one of the macrobiotic

brochures; the colleague had written a report on how he had successfully treated a woman with advanced

breast cancer by means of macrobiotics.

The still-doubtful Dr Satillaro then decided to persist. He made arrangements to have all his meals with a family

whose members were part of the Macrobiotic Society.

Although he gradually started to feel better, the cancer pains remained. Then, after approximately three

months, on a morning toward the end of September, he awoke for the first time in two years without back pain.

But despite his pain relief and general sense of wellbeing, there was still no certainty that the diet was in fact

responsible for the unexpected improvement, so he decided to undergo medical tests. These showed no

progression of the cancer but nothing more. He continued with the diet and also regularly attended macrobiotic

classes.

On 22 January, eight months after cancer was diagnosed, Satillaro underwent more tests. These included the

liver function enzyme tests that had first confirmed the presence of cancer. This time, however, the tests

showed notable improvement, with the values having dropped to near normal.

The reaction by the medical profession

While Dr Satillaro had been undergoing medical treatment only, his condition showed no improvement; in fact,

he had been taking estrogens for more than a month without any signs of improvement. Within weeks of

beginning with macrobiotics he was beginning to feel better.

Nonetheless, his oncologist attributed the improvement of his patient to the estrogen therapy, although he

admitted that the pattern was somewhat unusual. His oncologist reiterated his view that diet had no effect on

cancer and that the observed clinical events in relation to the dietary changes were purely coincidental.

However, the newly confident Dr Satillaro, who was looking younger and healthier, believed that the reversal

was not due to the medical treatment but to his macrobiotic regime. The best way to test this was to

discontinue the estrogen therapy and to see whether the cancer returned.

He decided first to seek advice. Michio assured him that the estrogens had nothing to do with his recovery and,

if anything, was retarding it. On the other hand, his oncologist medical advisor was adamant that his recovery

was solely due to the estrogens and to discontinue them was inadvisable and would cause the cancer to return.

Dr Satillaro took the former‘s advice, and discontinued the estrogen therapy toward the end of June 1979,

nearly a year after he was first diagnosed.

He continued to improve, and by mid-August his laboratory tests showed no appreciable change from values

obtained while he was still receiving estrogen therapy. This was encouraging and prompted him to return to his

post as medical practitioner with renewed energy.

Final proof of recovery had to await the outcome of a bone scan. Naturally, Satillaro was anxious. The machine

was turned on and his body systematically scanned concentrating on those areas where lesions had showed up

previously. It was a moment of tension for both doctor and patient. ..

The final verdict? All was normal! Nowhere in the patient‘s body could the machine find any cancer cells.

The investigating doctor was perplexed. He carefully repeated the whole procedure - still no sign of cancer.

The results were taken to the oncologist who had been treating Satillaro. He too was astounded, having

expected at best to see no progression of the lesions. He too had never seen a case like this before. He had to

admit that he did not know for certain what had caused the unexpected total remission, but assumed that it

must have been the estrogens and the orchiectomy. However, even though he declined to advise his patient to

go back on estrogen therapy, he still could not in any way support a dietary approach to cancer.

Cancer Healing: Case 2

Jean Kohler: pancreatic cancer

Treated with a macrobiotic diet

This case history of Jean Kohler, a professor of music who developed pancreatic cancer in 1973, was reported

by Dr Satillaro in (Recalled by Life).

The diagnosis was established when Jean‘s physicians performed exploratory surgery and discovered a fist-sized

tumor on his pancreas; because it had spread to the duodenum, it was inoperable. Pancreatic cancer is one of

the most intractable cancers known and is generally regarded as a death sentence.

Although Kohler was told that he had no chance of survival, he took one course of chemotherapy, which did not

have any effect.

Kohler was then introduced to Michio Kushi and macrobiotics and immediately started with the diet. Within a

year his laboratory tests showed no sign of cancer and he was feeling fine.

Over the next seven years he became a crusader for the macrobiotic diet as treatment for cancer, lecturing to

audiences across the United States and publishing the book ―Healing miracles through Macrobiotics‖.

Despite the evidence- the indubitable diagnosis through exploratory surgery - in medical circles, this case

history is regarded ‗anecdotal evidence‘ and is therefore unacceptable as proof of efficacy of the treatment.

lf only one such case history were available, such a stance is no doubt justified. However, with macrobiotics and

other nutritional interventions, many case histories are available, supported by sufficient scientific detail. This

makes the ‗anecdotal‘ stance more like an out-of-hand rejection of potentially valuable treatment modalities.

Cancer Healing: Case 3

Treated with vitamin C

Pleural mesothelioma is a highly aggressive form of cancer and patients usually have a short life expectancy. It

is usually, but not always, associated with asbestos exposure, and is considered virtually untreatable by any of

the standard methods of treatment.

It therefore presents a severe test for the efficacy or otherwise of nutritional intervention.

Below are the case histories of two patients who reacted very well to dietary intervention measures. They (Mrs.

I and Case T) are described by Cameron and Pauling in Cancer and Vitamin C.

In all cases the patients responded in a manner that could not be explained by the medical treatment alone.

Mrs. I

Mrs. I was diagnosed in 1975 at the well-known Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre, New York. At the

suggestion of Dr Cameron, she started taking 10g of Vitamin C daily and apparently recovered completely on

clinical judgment and on the basis of chest X-rays.

Four years later, she was leading an archaeological expedition – and her chest X-rays remained unchanged.

Case T

After a period of illness, this retired business executive underwent exploratory surgery, in the course of which

was discovered a tumor of the diaphragmatic pleura and multiple metastatic lesions in the pleural covering of

the lung.

Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis as malignant mesothelioma of the pleura. Under the

circumstances no other treatment was advised, other than a course of 5-fluorouracil injections (which it seems

did more harm than good).

In desperation and on his own initiative, the patient began taking supplemental vitamin C (10g daily) on 3 July

1977. He rapidly increased the dose and by 17 July was taking 25g - he maintained this level indefinitely. The

patient was next seen in late May 1979, doing well.

He was thoroughly examined (chest X-rays, liver isotope studies, CAT brain scan) without any evidence of

disease, either at that stage or during repeated subsequent examinations.

‗Case T‘ then made urgent representations to the Canadian Medical Authorities in an attempt to make details of

his case history more widely known to others who may benefit. These received no response.

Conclusion

There are many more testimonials, but the fact of the matter is that all the different natural cancer curing

methods has a lot in common.

10. Lifestyle Changes Needed

How Do I Fight Cancer?

There is no one drug, herb, or ―magic bullet‖ that will kill cancer. Cancer has to be treated from within the

body, by building the body‘s immune system to kill the cancer by itself.

Therefore we need to understand the nature of the ―beast‖ to be able to fight it successfully.

How Do I build a Strong Immune System?

What is needed?

Food that....

1. discourage the growth of cancer cells

2. boost the immune system

3. can promote blood circulation

4. can help to stabilize blood sugar Levels – normalize insulin levels

5. will balance the pH of the body

6. will provide the right type of vitamins and minerals to fight cancer

Plus: A routine of:

exercise (every day)

enough rest (sleep at least 8 hours for full recovery)

Make the following changes in your diet to fight cancer

10(a) Eliminate These Foods (Get it out of your cupboards and out of your house)

What you eat may determine how fast cancer grows. If you are determined to fight Cancer, YOU have to

make the right food choices to combat cancer the Natural Way.

Certainly many crucial factors are at play in cancer destiny but diet is now considered a major one.

Cancer is preventable through a change in diet, and most of the cancer institutions around the world now

admit that over 90% of cancers are brought about by poor dietary habits. However, there are specific

carcinogens which are sometimes unknown to us, and which we cannot avoid. There are others which we

can avoid, and those are the ones pointed out below. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it will

give you an idea of what to look out for and avoid where possible.

processed food is loaded with chemicals we often know nothing about (packaged and canned

food)

fizzy drinks, hamburgers, fast food, sweets and chips

Estrogen-fed meat — livestock is fed vast amounts of hormones and antibiotics to accelerate

their growth. This applies to dairy products too. The drugs are active in the milk and cheese, even

after pasteurization.

processed meat is full of all sorts of horrendous body parts, chemicals, colorants, flavorants and

fats —making the food look ‗appetizing‘ and palatable enough to consume.

Sugar

Almost all kinds of sugar will paralyze and hinder your white blood cells from fighting off an

infection. The white blood cells are the soldiers of the body and fight and destroy any invasive

forces, like viruses etc.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 21

Eating 25 teaspoons of sugar will paralyze 92% of your white blood cells for approximately five

hours. A can of cola has approx. 8-10 teaspoons of sugar, a piece of white bread 2 teaspoons. It

must be remembered that sugar or empty calories and junk food interfere with the working of the

immune system of the body. Sucrose, fructose, glucose and sweeteners cause acid in the body.

Saturated Fats

Diets high in refined fats have long been associated with increased cancer risk. Cancer is more

frequent in people on diets high in saturated fats, (whole milk, margarines), and in animal fat. A

low fat diet not only prevents cancer, but it increases the survival of people who already have

cancer.

o Fat and Cancer

 Some research shows that the more saturated animal fat in your diet, the greater

are the odds of the spread of the cancer, and the more total fat in your diet, the

greater your chances are of dying from cancer.

 The hazard also appears to depend on the type of fat. The worst fats appear to be

saturated animal fat and omega-6-type vegetable oils, such as sunflower seed and

corn oil.

 Theoretically there are solid reasons to suspect the role of fat in cancer. Saturated

animal fat promotes high blood levels of the hormone estradiol, considered a marker

for high susceptibility to cancer.

 A high fat diet reduces the ability of the body to fight off cancer.

 If you have cancer, you should be very wary of eating any saturated fat, especially

animal fats, including cheese, butter and meat fat, as well as all other fats like

margarine, sunflower seed oil, canola oil, etc.

Eliminate Toxins

Try to eliminate all known toxins from your home. Try not to use toilet spray (air freshener).

Replace all chemical cleaning products with something natural and organic. If you are living

near a cellular or high voltage electrical tower, try to move for the duration of your recovery

period. Electromagnetic radiation and electro-magnetic fields from these towers can

hamper any cancer recovery attempt.

10(b) Cancer Fighting Food

Implement the following food in your diet to build the immune system.

After many years of research around the globe, scientists can tell which food will help to defeat cancer and

which food stimulates the growth of cancer.

Researchers predict that by changing the way we eat could make a major dent in cancer deaths.

(Journal of the National Cancer Institute declared that changes in the diet might prevent as much as 50 per cent of all cancer in the

United States.)

Foods which can Combat Cancer

12 types of food to fight cancer:

One of the easiest things for a person with cancer to address is his/her diet. Here are 12 types of food

that can each play a role in fighting one or more steps in the multi-step cancer process.

Remember that ‗good nourishment‘ is a crucial weapon in the fight against cancer and any illness. Good

cancer nutrition can be vital in increasing your personal odds of survival.

Natural compounds are likely to do you a much more good than synthetic pills! Here are a few additions to

your cancer diet, as a part of your own Integrated Cancer Treatment Programme.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 22

1. Oily Fish

Vitamin A is an important vitamin in the fight against cancer. Oily fish is the best provider of Vitamin

A, with herring, mackerel and salmon at the top of the list. Fish oil will also give you long chain

Omega-3 which has been linked to reduced levels of prostate, breast and colon cancer. You will also

get a little vitamin D, which is a proven cancer-fighter too.

2. Carrots

Along with apricots, peppers and pumpkins, they provide cancer carotenoids like beta-carotene, which

converts to vitamin A, when required by the body. 1 cup of carrot juice, 2 sweet potatoes, 16 dried

apricots and 4 cups of red cherries will each provide 25mgs.

Do not eat them all at once - people have been known to turn a little orange! A great juice to make by

you involves carrots and apples (for quercitin) and beetroot (for anthocyanins). A real cancer fighting

drink!

3. Red Peppers

Red peppers are the top source of vitamin C - even better than oranges! Vitamin C strengthens your

immune cells and neutralizes toxins. Linus Pauling thought cancer patients should consume 2 to 10

grams per day.

A large red pepper is ±250 mgs Vitamin C. 200 grams raw broccoli is ±175 mgs Vitamin C. 150 grams

papaya is ±90 mgs Vitamin C. An average orange is ±65 mgs Vitamin C. Berries and cherries are also

great sources of Vitamin C.

4. Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower seeds are high in zinc and vitamin E. Zinc helps vitamin C do its work and accelerates

healing time. It is important to a healthy prostate. You need 15 to 25 mgs natural Zinc per day. Five

tablespoons of sunflower seeds will give you ±10 mgs of Zinc.

Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds can be mixed with the sunflower seeds in your morning muesli. 5 tablespoons will each

provide 20 mgs of vitamin E, the ultimate cancer buster, which inhibits cancer cell growth and protects

immune cells from free radicals.

Vitamin E boosts the fighting abilities of your immune system. The target is 300-600 mgs and is

difficult to achieve without supplements. Green vegetables, soya and almonds are also good sources.

5. Brazil Nuts

Six cracked nuts will give you your daily selenium; 100 to 200 mcgs is the goal. Selenium is a very

potent anti-cancer agent. Eight slices of whole meal bread, an organic egg, or a large chicken breast

will also be enough.

Tuna, onions, broccoli and tomatoes contain selenium too.

6. Mushrooms

There is an enormous body of research evidence now that shows how ‗medicinal‘ mushrooms

(Shiitake, Maiitake, cordyceps etc) boost the immune system and fight cancer. Even the button

mushroom has cancer fighting ingredients.

7. Tomatoes

Seven to ten helpings per week, especially cooked.

According to Harvard research 7-10 helpings a week cuts prostate symptoms by 40% and has an

influence on many cancers e.g.: lung; colon; cervix; breast. Lycopene is the prime active ingredient,

and 25 - 40 mgs the desired daily dose.

It is also found in strawberries, peppers, carrots and peaches, but one tin of tomato soup has 65 mgs

alone.

8. Egg Yolk

Along with green leafy vegetables, avocado, beans, carrots, apricots and pumpkins, egg yolk will give

you folic acid.

This will help your DNA to replicate properly and protect it during radiotherapy.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 23

400 micrograms is a recommended amount. Folate, biotin, niacin and vitamin B6 are all B vitamins

that help in the fight of cancer. Egg yolk, greens and whole grains are the best sources.

9. Broccoli

And other green cruciferous vegetables e.g. cabbage, kale, brussel sprouts, contain fibre which helps

eliminate toxins

Moreover, the fibre is rich in galactose, which binds to damaging agents in the intestine.

Cruciferous vegetables also contain indoles, and especially indole3carbinol, which modifies and

diminishes aggressive oestrogen action and aids in fighting estrogen driven cancers like some breast,

prostate, brain and colorectal cancers.

Finally, sulforaphane in broccoli and especially sprouting broccoli seeds helps the liver detoxify, and

reduces stomach cancer tumours.

10.Garlic

Garlic has a number of active ingredients. It contains selenium; tryptophan and sulpher based active

agents that attack cancer cells.

Two or three raw cloves of garlic per day will ward off more than vampires.

11.Beetroot

Beetroot and cherries, aubergines, red grapes - indeed any purple coloured fruits and vegetables

contain anthocyanins (and sometimes also resveratrrol). Anthocyanins have been shown to kill cancer

cells; resveratrrol has research supporting its role in fighting certain cancers like blood and brain

cancers too.

12. Pulses

Lentils, chickpeas, beans and even soya etc. are a great source of fibre and protein without the animal fat.

Pulses also contain Isoflavones, Phyto-estrogens. People get confused about plant estrogen. The cells of

your body have estrogen receptor sites. When one form of human estrogen (estradiol) binds to them, the

result is havoc inside your cells.

About 40 times less potent is human estrogen and about 40 to 50 times less potent still is plant estrogens.

Now which would you rather have sitting on your receptors? Pulses also provide fibers like lignans that can

help neutralise free-radicals in the gut and blood stream.

Eat pulses every two days.

There are a lot of other cancer fighting food, but these are the most important, to be included

in our daily diets.

NOTE: Try to eliminate all food which causes Acid in the body. All Alkaline Food tends to fight

Cancer. (see the Acid Alkaline Tables at the end of this book)

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 24

10(c) Herbs and Spices to Combat Cancer

The incidence of cancer and the death rate from this disease are four to five times lower in countries where

large quantities of spices are eaten.

The inclusion of more herbs and spices in the diet should be part of any cancer preventive program.

Use these herbs and spices in your cooking and the whole family will benefit.

Basil

Use Basil in just about anything you can think of, either cooked or not. You can make wonderful pesto for your

freezer for use all year long. You can put this in every tomato based dish, because it will always give a unique

flavor to the dish. Add to sauces, freshly chopped in salads, sprinkle over vegetables and stir fries. It is a quick

way to stir up new flavors in ordinary dishes. Basil has been shown to inhibit cancer growth and progression by

affecting cell proliferation and angiogenesis.

Bay Leaf

Bay leaves can be found whole at your grocers, usually in the spice aisle. Use them whole (so you can fish them

out before serving) in soups, stews and sauces as they need long slow cooking to release their entire flavor.

Widely used in Mediterranean dishes, this leaf contains Eugenol which contains antioxidants. As we know,

antioxidants are very good for eliminating free radicals, a major cause of cancer.

Black Pepper

Black pepper has been known to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antimutagenic

properties and helps improve digestion. Black pepper is a dietary source of vitamin C, vitamin K and

manganese. The spiciness of black pepper is due to its piperine content.

Piperine has been shown to significantly increase the bioavailability of selenium and beta-carotene, among other

nutrients.

Piperine has also been shown to enhance stem cell sensitivity to curcumin, a component of the spice turmeric.

Curcumin may decrease cancer risk in part by reducing stem cell self-renewal and enhancing differentiation of

stem cells.

Cilantro

This is the leafy part of coriander. Easily grown in your garden, you can snip and use fresh by the handfuls in

tomato dishes. Cilantro is thought to detoxify the body, by getting rid of metals that accumulate in our bodies.

It adds a wonderful clean taste to many dishes.

Ginger

Ginger has been found to significantly inhibit mammary tumorigenesis and tumor growth in laboratory mice

when fed in drinking water. Gingerol, a component of ginger, has been shown to inhibit cell adhesion, invasion,

and motility in ER-negative (estrogen independent) human cancer cells in the laboratory.

Oregano

Oregano has one of the highest amounts of antioxidants of all the herbs, so use it frequently not just for its

anti-cancer benefits, but also because it makes eating so much more fun.

Parsley

Parsley has been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, as well as moderate

antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, radioprotective, antispasmodic, anti-anxiety, and cholesterol-lowering

properties. You just cannot get too many antioxidants in your diet and this is a very easy way to remedy that,

as it does not add strong flavor on its own.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 25

Rosemary (fresh)

Rosemary is a rich source of cancer fighting properties. Use this herb in soups and stews. It goes well with

tomatoes! Rosemary may help increase the activity of detoxification enzymes. An extract of rosemary, termed

carnosol, has inhibited the development of both breast and skin tumors in animals. It can also be consumed as

a tea: Use 1 tsp. dried leaves per cup of hot water; steep for 15 minutes

Thyme (fresh)

You just cannot cook with tomatoes, without using thyme. It is great sprinkled over fresh tomatoes with a

drizzle of high quality olive oil - not just delicious, but also nutritious and beneficial. As with all of these herbs,

anti-oxidants help to rid you of cancer causing free radicals. You can toss this into your other vegetables to perk

up the flavor. Make thyme part of your garden.

Turmeric contains the compound curcumin, which has been studied for its anti-cancer properties. Bharat

Aggarwal and colleagues concluded in their 2003 review article on curcumin, that ―… it is quite apparent that

curcumin has tremendous potential for prevention and therapy of various cancers.‖

Summary:

Nutrition suggestions to counteract cancer

Eat fatty fish and beans, including soya beans - foods that may prevent both occurrence of cancer and

its growth.

Eat food with herbs and spices that interfere with the pro-cancer activities of estrogen. This includes

fermented soya beans, cruciferous vegetables and wheat bran cereals.

Eat a variety of green vegetables, which generally seem to reduce tumor growth in cancer.

Eliminate coffee, alcohol and soft drinks, like sodas and sports drinks.

To prevent cancer or suppress its growth if you have it, eat omega-3 fatty acids in oily fish and omega-9

fatty acids of the mono-unsaturated type found in olive oil. Restrict saturated animal fats as well as

omega-6 fatty acids predominant in corn, sunflower seed oils, canola oil and all margarines.

10(e) WATER

The practice of making water safe to drink actually involves adding large amounts of extremely poisonous

chemicals to it. Key scientists are now providing evidence that long-term ingestion of small amounts of

chemicals like these could be the cause of some major health problems.

Here is a list of just a few of the chemicals routinely added to our water supply:

Liquified chlorine

Fluorosilicic acid

Aluminium sulphate

Calcium hydroxide

Sodium silicofluoride

Even if the water leaves the source in a relatively clean state, do not forget that water travels through

pipes, which may have been underground since Victorian times. It is almost impossible for the water not

to become contaminated by something undesirable.

Bottled water is also not safe if you have cancer, because it also contains chemicals and are packed in a

plastic which can contaminate your body. Get yourself a reverse osmosis water filter, connect it to a tap in

your kitchen and use the purified water for cooking and drinking.

10(f) SLEEP

A study shows that the quality and time you sleep may determine how well your body fights cancer.

According to psychiatrist, David Spiegel, MD, and colleague Sandra Sephton, MD, sleep problems alter the

balance of at least two hormones that influence cancer cells.

Sleep, Hormones, and Cancer

One hormone is cortisol, which helps to regulate immune system activity. This includes the release of "natural

killer" cells which can help the body to battle cancer. Cortisol levels typically peak at dawn, after hours of sleep,

and decline throughout the day.

―According to Dr. Spiegel, night shift women workers have higher rates of cancer than women who sleep normal

hours. The night shift workers‘ cortisol levels peak in the afternoon. At least two studies show night shift women

typically die earlier from cancer.‖

The study also indicates that women who wake up repeatedly during the night are also more likely to have

abnormal cortisol patterns.

Cortisol is the so-called "stress" hormone triggered, along with others, during times of anxiety and may play a

role in the development and worsening of cancer.

The other hormone affected by sleep is melatonin. Produced by the brain during sleep, melatonin may have

antioxidant properties that help prevent damage to cells that can lead to cancer.

In addition, melatonin lowers estrogen production. Thus, a lack of sleep leads to too little melatonin. This series

of events may expose women to high levels of estrogen and may increase the risk of cancer.

According to Dr. Spiegel, there is a definite hormonal pattern which is affected by sleep, which can predict a

more rapid progression of cancer.

"Getting a good night's sleep is fairly simple, if you allow yourself to do it. The big problem for cancer patients

is, they take too much on themselves and don't give enough time to help their bodies cope with the illness.

They're worried about burdening their families and fulfilling their usual obligations."

10(g) Exercise

NOTE: Try to Exercise for at least 30 minutes up to an hour. Over-exercising causes the depletion of essential

vitamins and minerals in the body. It also causes an impaired Immune System.

Enough exercise (30 to 60 minutes) per day is crucial to boost bodily functions and to enhance oxygen rich

blood circulation.

Advantages of Exercise:

Exercise helps to quickly move waste products through the intestines.

Exercise promotes insulin efficiency, which decreases the risk of many diseases, thus accounting for a

common theme among cancer researchers:

Exercise boosts your immune system by increasing the amounts of lymphocytes, interleukin,

neutrophils, and other immune substances circulating in your body. Exercise also raises the level of high

density lipoproteins, the good cholesterol that sweeps cholesterol deposits off the inside walls of the

arteries.

"If you have no time for exercise, you better reserve a lot of time for disease."

Walking

Walking is the least daunting form of exercise. It's cheap; it's easy on the knees and requires no sporty

coordination. Learn how to walk for fun, for good health, for fitness and for weight loss. Here is an eight-

week program that can be customized to suit different body types and lifestyles. Now there's no excuse

not to get moving!

 Walking for fitness and health, you should walk for 30-60 minutes most days of the week.

 If you are an absolute beginner who is not already walking for up to 30 minutes, use the walking

advice in the Absolute Beginners Tutorial below to guide how long you should walk to build up

your endurance.

 You should also seek medical advice before beginning an exercise and nutrition program.

Walking Technique

This section will get you putting one foot in front of the other. Walking technique for the street, track, or

treadmill is the same. You want to walk with good posture, using arm and foot motion that will propel you

forward with good power and no wasted effort.

Posture

How you hold your body is important to walking comfortably and easily. With good posture, you will be

able to breathe easier and you will avoid back pain.

 Stand up straight.

 Think of being a tall and straight. Do not arch your back.

 Do not lean forward or lean back. Leaning puts strain on the back muscles.

 Eyes forward, not looking down, rather 20 feet ahead.

 Chin up (parallel to the ground). This reduces strain on neck and back.

 Shrug once and let your shoulders fall and relax, your shoulders slightly back.

 Suck in your stomach.

 Tuck in your behind and rotate your hip forward slightly. This will keep you from arching your back.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 28

Arms

Arm motion can lend power to your walking, burning 5-10% more calories and acting as a balance to your

leg motion.

 Bend your elbow 90 degrees.

 Hands should be loose in a partially closed curl, never clenched.

 Clenching your fists can raise your blood pressure and should be avoided.

 With each step, the arm opposite your forward foot comes straight forward, not diagonally.

 As the foot goes back, the opposite arm comes straight back.

 Keep your elbows close to your body - don't "chicken wing."

 Your forward hand should not cross the centre point of your body.

 Your hand when coming forward should be kept low, not higher than your breastbone.

 Many poor examples of arm motion are seen with walkers pumping their arms up high in the air,

this does not help propel you.

 If at first you find adding arm motion tiring, do it for 5 to 10 minutes at a time and then let your

arms rest.

Taking a Step

The walking step is a rolling motion.

 Strike the ground first with your heel.

 Roll through the step from heel to toe.

 Push off with your toe.

 Bring the back leg forward to strike again with the heel.

 Flexible shoes will ensure you are able to roll through the step.

 If your feet are slapping down rather than rolling through the step, your shoes are most likely too

stiff.

 At first, your shin muscles may tire and be sore until they are strengthened.

Walking Stride

When practicing a good walking stride, the first key is to avoid overstriding, which is taking longer steps to

increase speed. Overstriding is inefficient and it is potentially harmful.

Take more, smaller steps rather than lengthening your stride. Your stride should be longer behind your

body, where your toe is pushing off, rather than out in front of your body.

This is because your forward leg has no power, while your back leg is what is driving you forward. You

want to get the full power out of the push from the back leg, with the foot rolling through the step from

heel to toe. Fast walkers train themselves to increase the number of steps they take per second and to get

full use out of the back part of the stride.

Warm-up

Start out at a slow, easy pace for each walking session.

Allow your muscles to warm up before you stretch, add speed or hills.

Warm up for 5 minutes at this easy pace.

Stretching Routine

Stretching will add flexibility and can make your walking more comfortable.

Warm up for 5 minutes at an easy walking pace before stretching, never stretch cold muscles or you risk

tearing them.

Incorporate mobility exercises designed to take a muscle and joint through its range of motion. You will

start at the top of your body and work your way down. Find an upright pole or fence or wall that will

support you for leaning into on some stretches.

Cool Down

For the final 5-10 minutes of your walk, finish with an easy walking pace.

At the end of your walk you may want to repeat the stretches you did after your warm-up.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 29

Walking Schedule

You've decided to start walking, you've learned how to walk, and now for:

Schedule: How far and how often to walk.

The Absolute Beginner Schedule

Health goals: Walking a half hour a day or 3 hours per week is associated with a decreased risk of heart

disease. Walking 7 hours a week is associated with a decreased risk of breast cancer and Type II diabetes.

For this reason, I recommend that you build up to walking an hour a day, most days of the week.

Track your walks: Keeping records will keep you on track.

Build a Habit: Walk at least 5 days a week, even if some days you must decrease your time, in order to

build your new healthy habit. Increase the time you spend walking each week before working on speed.

Week 1: Start with a daily 15 minute walk at an easy pace.

Walk five days the first week. We want to build a habit, so consistency is important. Spread out your rest

days, such as making day 3 a rest day and day 6 a rest day.

Weekly total goal: 60 - 75 minutes.

Week 2: Add 5 minutes a day so you are walking 20 minutes, 5 days a week. Or you may wish to extend

yourself more on some days, followed by a rest day.

Weekly total goal: 75 - 100 minutes.

Week 3: Add 5 minutes a day so you are walking 25 minutes, 5 days a week.

Weekly total goal: 100 - 125 minutes.

Week 4: Add 5 minutes a day to walk 30 minutes, 5 days a week.

Weekly total goal: 125 - 150 minutes.

Snags: If you find any week to be difficult, repeat that week rather than adding more time, until you are

able to progress comfortably.

Graduate: Once you are able to walk 30 minutes at a time comfortably, progress to the next level.

10(h) Emotional Healing

Before you embark on your journey to perfect health, you need to understand that there is a component which

is just as important as nutrition, supplements and exercise – ―Emotional Wellness‖.

If you experience any shock, like the death of a loved one or a child and you have not dealt with it completely,

you might not heal, no matter what anti-cancer regimen you follow.

See an expert to help you through the emotional trauma, but please try not to take any psychotic drugs. There

are a lot of wonderful, natural ways to cope with emotional pain. Taking any drug is like short circuiting the

process.

See somebody like a pastoral psychiatrist or just a very good friend with whom you can talk.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 30

11. Six Vital Steps for the Cancer Patient

Cancer is indeed a serious disease, and remains one of the principal causes of death, but the fact that

your doctor has diagnosed cancer is no longer equivalent to receiving a death sentence. The situation is

no longer hopeless, and there are many strategies that will not only prolong life, but may even lead to a

perfect cure.

Although there are those who disagree, a vast number of medical practitioners now believe in

alternative treatment for cancer, because of the living evidence which no one can argue against.

The following 6 steps are aimed primarily at the Cancer patient who do not want to follow conventional

treatment or has already had treatment, such as radiation or surgery, to reduce tumour burden.

Regardless of type and stage of cancer, these steps are vital to your overall cancer plan and should be

followed meticulously, in consultation with your health care practitioner.

Step 1:

Make Sure

There are too many wrong diagnoses today. Remember, it is YOUR health that we are talking about. When

diagnosed with Cancer, get a 2nd, 3rd and even a 4th opinion.

Step 2:

Find a Health Practitioner

If you want to follow the alternative cancer treatment, find a good health practitioner who specializes in

alternative cancer treatment - one that can guide you and encourage you on your way to perfect health. Ask

references of such a health practitioner at your Health Food Store, Pharmacy, friends, other people who had

cancer, etc.

Or

Find the right oncologist who is a specialist in traditional methods of treatment and also understands the

importance of the alternative treatments. Unfortunately much of what is generally known as ‗natural‘ or

‗complementary‘ medicine still subsists at a level that might be justifiably termed ‗quackery‘ or ‗hearsay

medicine‘. This is one of the reasons why so many doctors are against complementary medical approaches. It

will be your task to convince your doctor (using evidence in this book) that there is another side to

complementary medicine, a side that is as much based on scientific principles as the disciplines he or she is

using.

This person also needs to monitor your progress by means of monthly blood analyses. You will be motivated if

you see your progress on the monthly blood analysis.

Step 3:

Attitude

Develop a positive attitude. You cannot beat cancer if you are negative, depressed and convinced that you are

going to die. The significance of mental attitude in overcoming disease cannot be overestimated.

Cancer is survivable. It doesn‘t matter what ―stage‖ or type of cancer. All cancer patients can overcome it and

live out their normal lifespan. People who believe this with all their heart and soul get well. Those who doubt it,

do not.

2 Characteristics of Cancer survivors!

1. A Positive attitude – taking charge of their own health

2. Commitment – to be 100% committed to their alternative regimen, supplements, diet, exercise

and sleep.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 31

Step 4:

Companion

Get a close friend or family member who will understand your reason for not following the conventional

treatment route - someone who can encourage you and help you with the new type of lifestyle. Maybe this

person also needs a health makeover. There will be some emotional ―lows‖ and that is why a close companion

or friend is needed to help you cope and to encourage you to be positive. Do not get a negative person to be

you cancer companion. You would need somebody who always sees the bright side of life.

Remember, you were born for a purpose on this earth. Try to find your purpose and focus on get well to fulfill

that goal.

Step 5:

Take Action

Don‘t wait until you have found the right health practitioner, the companion or the 4th opinion. Start

immediately with the diet and supplement regimen. This will give you time to contemplate the pros and cons of

alternative treatment vs. conventional treatment, while your immune system will start working on the cancer

without the horrible side effects of conventional treatment.

Step 6:

See the daily nutritional, supplement, exercise and sleep regimen below and start with...

1. Detoxifying (also to eliminate all toxins and cancer causing foods out of your house)

2. Supplementation

3. Diet

4. Exercise

5. Sleep

For your convenience we have put together a daily routine, recipes and supplement regimen to follow.

You will have choices of different detoxifying juice recipes, breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes as well as snack

suggestions. You can also choose the type of exercise you like the most. Try to follow the supplement regiment

as indicated. If you commit to the program and are positive about a healthy future, you will succeed.

To Summarize:

Actions you need to take to Beat Cancer Naturally

Your Daily Regimen should include

1. Food that....

discourage the growth of cancer cells

boost the immune system

can promote blood circulation

can help to stabilize blood sugar Levels – normalize insulin levels

will balance the pH of the body

will provide the right type of vitamins and minerals to fight cancer

2. Supplements

3. Exercise (every day)

4. Enough rest (sleep at least 8 hours for full recovery)

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 32

12. Step-by-Step Daily Regimen to Fight Cancer

To start with a good, healthy program is not easy, unless you have a program to dictate your day-to-day

actions. The following program is designed to rectify blood sugar, insulin and pH levels in the body.

You will be going through a detoxification process, while boosting the immune system.

It is not advisable to eliminate carbohydrates in total, but to fight cancer successfully, you have to reduce

the ―carbs‖ to normalise pH levels as well as insulin and blood sugar levels.

Eliminate meat as far as possible, because most meats cause acid in the body.

Continue with this regimen until you are clean of cancer.

The Goal

To create an environment which restricts any further cancer growth and to boost the immune system to

get rid of any cancer cells should be your goal.

Portion Size

Adjust portion size to suit your body frame requirements

Menu and recipes

As all the recipes and menus are designed to do the same, you can swap around to suit your lifestyle.

Drink

Start your day with a glass of water with fresh lemon juice squeezed into it, or herbal tea, without sugar or milk.

Please stay away from coffee and sugar for the duration of the Program. Drink fresh water and herbal teas

throughout the day. NO sugar or artificial sweeteners!

Water is just as important as the right food in order to control blood sugar levels. Whenever you feel hungry or

when you crave certain food, it might be that your body requires moisture instead of food. Drink water and herbal

teas as and when you feel like it – Note: too much can wash out essential nutrients.

Tip: Keep a bottle of purified water at hand - sip as often as possible.

Cancer Fighting Food Food which can fuel cancer growth

Brightly coloured, non-starchy vegetables (Organic) Sugar and any food with refined sugar

Brightly coloured Fruit (organic where possible) Wheat products (bread, pasta, cakes, biscuits and pies)

Omega-3 Fish oil (fresh fatty fish) Salty food or processed food (tinned and packaged)

Garlic & Onions (raw & uncooked) Soft drinks (carbonated drinks)

Nuts in moderation (high fat content) Caffeine and alcohol

Olives & Olive Oil Starchy vegetables (butternut, potatoes)

Hot spices & Ginger Cheese and dairy products

What to Expect: You may get headaches; feel bloated, tired and emotional during the first few days of the

program. This is normal when your body detoxify. Other possible reactions are frequent urination, diarrhea, skin

rash, joint pain and even cold and flu symptoms.

The program will help to re-balance (1) blood sugar levels, (2) Insulin Levels, (3) Serotonin levels for a ―feel good

mood‖, (4) enhance energy levels and appetite (5) promote a more alkaline system [pH Balancing]

After the re-balancing process, your body will be ready to take healthy living to the next level.

Drinks Options

Eliminate all sugary drinks, including all soft drinks and prepared fruit juices (no matter what the label says). Don‘t

drink any alcohol, coffee or normal tea during this program.

WATER

Drink only distilled or purified water.

WATER & LEMON JUICE

HERBAL TEAS (without Sugar)

Milk Thistle Tea and Dandelion Tea

Certain herbs are very important for supporting the liver in detoxification during the fast. Other herbs are

important for supporting the kidneys and the GI tract. Milk thistle and dandelion tea are very important in

supporting the liver for detoxification.

Milk thistle actually protects the liver from toxins, and dandelion helps to increase bile production and

stimulate the gallbladder to excrete the bile. Drink milk thistle tea every day during your fast along with

dandelion tea to protect the liver and to help rid the body of bile, which contains many of the toxins.

Herb teas can be sweetened with a small amount of Stevia, which can be found at most health food

stores.

Asparagus Tea and Nettle Tea

Since toxins are eliminated primarily through the kidneys and Gl-tract, it is important to support the

kidneys during this period. Asparagus tea along with nettle tea has diuretic properties. This also helps to

support the kidneys so that they can eliminate toxins more effectively.

Green Tea

Green tea is very high in polyphenols called catechins. This tea has 200 times more antioxidant power

than vitamin E and 500 times more than Vitamin C. Green tea does contain caffeine, however. So do not

drink it too late in the day or it can interfere with sleep. It is strongly recommended that you enjoy green

tea in the morning and for lunch.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea benefits digestion and also has calming properties. Chamomile tea is an excellent tea to

drink after supper to help calm you before going to bed.

Pancreatic Cancer: Step-by-Step Guide to Health Page 46

COOKING METHODS

Try to use stainless steel, cast iron or bamboo cookery equipment and utensils and not Teflon or

aluminum.

Here is what happens to a carrot using different methods of cooking.

Boiling

You will lose some of the water-soluble vitamins but retain the oil-soluble vitamins.

Steaming

Similar to boiling except the loss of water-soluble vitamins is slower.

Frying

Some of the oil-soluble vitamins will be lost but not the water-soluble vitamins.

Baking

Increases the absorbable fat content of the carrot and raises the Gl.

Stewing

The carrot becomes sweeter and the carbohydrates are more accessible.

Pressure-cooking

Increases the water temperature before boiling, exposing the carrot to a higher temperature, losing more

of the fragile vitamins but increasing the availability of carbohydrates

Necessary equipment to acquire

Water Purifier

A reverse osmosis type of water purifier is very good to get all the chemicals and impurities out of the

water. This is essential for your health and recovery.

Juicer

There are a lot of different juicers on the market and I do not want to discuss it in depth, because it is

everyone‘s right to choose their preferred brand and color.

Cancer – Alternative Treatment Program

NOTE: Eliminate any kind of sugar totally from your diet!

1. Have a cup of water with lemon juice on waking every morning

2. Drink 1.5 to 2 liters distilled, pure water every day (keep a bottle of water at hand and sip often)

3. Drink 300 ml freshly extracted juice blend at least 3 times per day. More is better – see recipes

Try to use only organic vegetables and fruit. If not, remove the outer skins or wash it well to remove

any toxins or wax.

4. Take supplements as suggested

5. Use olive oil to cook with and put olive oil over salads (use suggested salad dressing)

6. Eliminate coffee, soft drinks and alcohol for the duration of the program. Drink only herb tea and water

when thirsty

7. Get enough sunlight exposure every day, because it is the best way to get vitamin D. Exercise – Plan

your day to get at least 30 to 45 minutes of exercise of choice (see list of exercises at the end of this

book)

8. Try to complete your evening meal by 7 pm, but not later than 8 pm

9. Evening snacks are optional, and should only be taken if you feel you need them

10. Sleep – 6 to 8 hours sleep per night is crucial to revitalize your body. If you do not get enough sleep,

you tend to crave carbohydrates the next day.

11. Try to stick to the program. Plan ahead and get in the right mind set. It is your health that we are

talking about and nobody else can do it except you!

Although it might seem that citrus fruits would have an Aspirin

acidifying effect on the body, the citric acid they contain Chemicals

actually has an alkalinizing effect in the system. Drugs, Medicinal

Drugs, Psychedelic

Note that a food's acid or alkaline forming tendency in Herbicides

the body has nothing to do with the actual pH of the Pesticides

food itself. For example, lemons are very acidic, however Tobacco

the end products they produce after digestion and

assimilation are very alkaline so, lemons are alkaline ACIDIFYING JUNK FOOD

forming in the body. Likewise, meat will test alkaline Beer: pH 2.5

before digestion, but it leaves very acidic residue in the Coca-Cola: pH 2

body so, like nearly all animal products, meat is very Coffee: pH 4

acid forming.

** These foods leave an alkaline ash but have an

acidifying effect on the body.
