Carrier Change: New Carrier for Your
Life/AD&D and Disability Insurance Plans
Dear Valued Employee,
In conjunction with the California Educators Insurance Plans, we are pleased to announce that Standard
Insurance Company (The Standard) will serve as the district’s new carrier for its .
Starting September 1, 2007, The Standard will provide your coverage. In addition to providing the same
level of benefits as your UnumProvident plan, you’ll discover the change brings many plan
enhancements.
Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, The Standard has a century of industry knowledge and more than five
decades of employee benefits experience. The company is highly regarded for its personal service,
financial stability, and the quality of its insurance products. The Standard is also known for their strength
in serving the public and education sectors.
What the Change Means for You
We are committed to making the transition to The Standard's a simple, smooth and positive experience for you. Your coverage will automatically transfer from
UnumProvident to The Standard on September 1, 2007. As soon as coverage becomes effective, The
Standard will send us copies of the new Summary Plan Description for distribution.
Please note that the life and disability plans now have a special Family Status Change enhancement for
active participants. This enhancement allows you to add or increase coverage within 31 days of your
Family Status Change (for example: marriage/domestic partnership, divorce/domestic partnership
dissolution, birth/adoption of a child) without providing Evidence of Insurability (proof of good health).
In the Event of a Disability
Should you experience a disability, please contact your district administrator as soon as possible so as not
to jeopardize your coverage. Under the Waiver of Premium benefit, your premium payments will be
waived while your disability benefits are payable. Should you become totally disabled, your Life
Insurance premium payments will be waived without affecting your life coverage (as long as you apply
for coverage within the required timeframe).
For disability occurring on or after September 1, 2007, please file your claim with The Standard; for
earlier claims, please contact UnumProvident.
