ADVANCED PLACEMENT TO SECOND LEVEL (1/2 way through 1 st year) - JANUARY 2012



ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

NOTE: Successful completion of entrance requirements does not guarantee acceptance into this program. If the number of

applications exceeds available seats, BCIT will select those applicants deemed to have the best opportunity for success.



1. You must obtain or show proof of Math 11 requirement – see specific Marketing option

website for grade requirement.



2. You must obtain or show proof of English 12 with a C+ or better (or equivalent):

3. You must complete or show proof of equivalents to ALL level 1 and 2 courses listed below:

1. You must submit a detailed resume showing relevant work experience, community and

volunteer experience.



2. You must submit a letter of intent explaining your reason for applying to the program.

specific options is deferred until Level 2 marks reviews in December. If an applicant’s 1 choice is not available

and they have successfully met all Level 2 requirements, they will be informed of other program options within

the Marketing Management Program that are available to them.



COMMUNICATION COURSE DESCRIPTION:



COMM 1103 or COMM 1106 Introduction to Business/Technical Communication. This Part-time Studies course

teaches practical techniques for planning, organizing, selecting, and presenting information in business or

industry. Covers routine memos, instructions, procedures, graphics and oral presentations. Pre-requisite:

COMM 0015 test.

First Year Communications Course:

* Please note if you believe that you have already completed the Communication course, you may apply for

course credit or apply for assessment through “Prior Learning” (challenge exam, etc) Individuals requesting

more information on this should:

 submit a letter, with your application, requesting that your application be considered towards waiving COMM

1103.

 include with this letter detailed official course outlines of the programs and/or courses you previously

completed that may aid in BCIT’s assessment of your educational background in the

Communication/English area.

 include a detailed resume and samples of your writing (if possible) from a business/work environment.

 courses through Prior Learning Assessment, will have a fee charged.





MARKETING OPTIONS



**Please note: Processing will not begin on your application until you designate your program option.

In the second year of the program, students focus on their specific fields of marketing expertise, including Professional Real

Estate, Entrepreneurship, Marketing Communications, Professional Sales and Tourism. Combined with additional core

competencies such as business law, computer systems, database management, marketing research, and negotiation skills,

BCIT Marketing Management grads have the benefit of a solid general business foundation, layered with an intensive

program specialization.



The Professional Real Estate Program - prepares the graduate for marketing, sales, managing broker, mortgage

brokerage, appraisal, property management and investment analyst, leadership and ownership positions. Graduates may

choose to pursue either licensed or non-licensed positions within the real estate industry. Graduates have found employment

in a broad spectrum of real estate industry fields.



The Entrepreneurship Program - provides students with a tool kit of skills that they will carry with them in careers ranging

from management roles in small companies to self employment as an entrepreneur. Students acquire skills that include

analysis of new business opportunities, composition of business plans and creation of financing proposals.



The Marketing Communications Program - graduates are employed in a variety of positions within advertising and public

relations firms, broadcasting and publishing firms, in-house marketing and promotion operations and production companies,

as well as in high technology and the not-for-profit sector.



The Professional Sales and Marketing Program - emphasizes the professional selling techniques required to present

sophisticated products and services to professional buyers. This option heavily emphasizes the planning, researching,

promotion, merchandising and relationship-building techniques essential for a successful career in professional sales.



Employers are found in manufacturing, wholesale/retail and service organizations. Sales positions provide the training

ground for advancement to eventual middle management positions. Applicants with some retail or sales experience will be

preferred.



The Tourism Management Program - prepares graduates for positions in firms or organizations engaged in developing

new tourism products and services or expanding the existing demand for these services; in destination management

organizations where product/market planning and research are essential; and in conference and event planning firms and

associations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS



When will I be accepted?

Seats for advanced placement students will be awarded after current full time level 1 students have written their finals at the

end of the term, before Christmas break. Please check your MyBCIT email account frequently.

What will happen if I cannot complete all required courses before the term starts?

ALL first term courses must be complete before entering Level 2.

When will I get my timetable?

Timetables are now available for you to print through BCIT’s Student Self-Service. Print your timetable one day prior to class

start by logging into my.bcit.ca and going to Student Self Service. You must be registered in your courses in order to

access this feature.

When can I buy my books?

It is recommended that students wait until the first week of classes before buying textbooks. Your instructors will tell you

which books to buy.

Can I take courses ahead of time to help reduce my course load?

In order to maintain a competitive application, it is recommended that you take no more than two courses per term ahead of

time. A maximum of two courses per level are eligible for credit. Please note: tuition for full time programs may not be

reduced.

What do I do if I have already completed a 2nd level course?

As soon as you have been accepted, you must apply for course credit/exemption if you have already completed a 2nd level

course either at another institution or through part-time studies at BCIT. Applications are available at Student Information

and Enrolment Services and will be accepted up to 14 calendar days into a term. An official transcript and a course outline

where appropriate must be provided (or be on file with BCIT) to process the request. You should attend classes until you

receive formal notification by mail that you have been granted course credit. Please note that this will not reduce your tuition

fees.

How much credit can I apply for?

As per Admission Procedure 5003-PR1, the department reserves the right to determine the granting of credit where

appropriate. A maximum of two courses per level are eligible for credit.



BCIT Residency Policy allows Transfer Credit up to a maximum of 50% of the total credit hours needed for certification.

Requests for transfer credit totaling more than 50% of the total program credits are reviewed on an individual basis by the

Dean’s Office.



What happens if I fail a course repeatedly?

Students are allowed a maximum of three attempts to successfully complete a course. A student, who fails a course twice,

will only be allowed to repeat the course with written permission from the Associate Dean, who will detail any special

considerations or conditions in a written contract with the student. The Associate Dean may identify to the Registrar’s Office

those students who are not permitted to attempt a course for a third time, and/or those who are not permitted to continue in

the program. Students who have not successfully completed a course within three attempts will not be eligible to graduate

from their respective programs unless special permission is granted by the Program Dean.





APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR ADVANCED PLACEMENT & READMISSION

Apply Early (Applications will be accepted February 1, 2011 for the January 2012 intake)

As soon as you have decided on the program of your choice, please submit a completed application form to Student

Information and Enrolment Services at SW1 – First Floor.

 Please note: you do not have to have all the requirements completed before you submit an application. When

admission becomes competitive, the date of the application may become one of the criteria used to select students.

Make sure application is completely filled out

For Students Who Are Working Towards Completing the Entrance Requirements

 It is the responsibility of the applicant to keep the Advanced Placement Office informed of their progress towards

meeting the entrance requirements

o If you are completing courses at BCIT, please call to advise when registered AND when the course has

been completed and the grade has been posted to your myBCIT account.

o If you are completing courses outside of BCIT, please submit proof of registration and follow up with official

transcripts once courses are complete.



**This process takes up to 4-6 weeks. Applicants will be notified of their application status by official correspondence through

their my.bcit.ca account**
