Math 50A-D

Making the best of your self-paced course using the textbook, CD’s

and on-line resources.

If you bought the textbook as packaged by the bookstore your package contains the textbook,

lecture CD’s and an access code for the on-line component of the course.

 CD’s of lectures on all topics in the course

These will help you to study at home and get instruction from the CD. You can watch these at

3am when the MSC is closed.

 My Math Lab Software package

To use this great package you go online to Coursecompass.com. The package includes an

access code that you use together with the course code which is provided by the MSC.

Once you have signed up and installed the software you can

o Watch instructor videos

o Get summaries of chapters on power point slides

o Do practice homework

o Have examples explained in detail

o Find out what you still need to study through “My Study Plan”

o Take your quizzes on-line at home

 Testing

To pass the course you must take a series quizzes and tests.

Quizzes can be taken two ways

1. At the MSC in the grading room on paper. If you don’t pass you will have to see the

instructor.

2. Online. If you don’t get 80% or more, you can retake the quiz. Make sure to study

your errors before you retake the quiz. (If you take it too many times without

passing, you might be asked take quizzes in the MSC only.)

After you passed the quiz online, you must print out the quiz summary and bring it

to MSC grading station. Unless you have this print out, you are not allowed to take

the next test. Please take quizzes and then come and take a test. Take the quizzes

and tests in the order in which they are in the syllabus. Only Tests count toward

your grade.

Tests must be taken at the MSC in person.

If you need help with any of the features please feel free to come to the MSC and get help from a

tutor.

Quick Start Guide to My Math Lab (MML)

In order to use the online quiz feature and to access all the other great features,

you must create an account in MML. It’s easy and here are the steps. Before you

begin, have your email address ready and your personal MML access code that was

packaged with your textbook.

You will also need an instructor code. This code links you to the correct course. The

code for the school year 2011-2012 is: msc41262. (Note: all letters are lower case

and there are no spaces.)

If you started Math 50 in msc58192, you can easily switch to the new course by

logging on as usual. Next, at the top of the left column, click on the phrase, “Enroll

in Another Course” and, when prompted, add the new course number (msc41262).

Begin where you left off and, in a few days, your previous work will be copied over to

the new course.

Now let’s get to the computer:

1. Go to http://www.coursecompass.com

2. Click on register in the STUDENT section

3. Click next, read the agreements, and click I Accept

4. If you have used any Pearson online feature before, you can enter your login

name and password, otherwise continue as a new user. Make up a login name

and a password. Be sure you pick something you can remember. Write both on

an index card and put it in a safe place!!!!

5. Enter your personal MML access code. Be sure to use CAPITAL LETTERS.

Keep this code in a safe place also.

6. Enter the zip code. It is 90601.

7. Enter the country. United States; Click next; Enter your name and other

information. Be sure to double check your email address.

8. Enter the course id msc41262; Click enter.

Now you have created an account. You can log in now or come back later. Make the

login page a favorite in your bookmarks www.coursecompass.com

You will be visiting this page daily during the semester. Click on Login; enter your

login name and password

Once you are registered you can log into MyMathLab from any computer. However in

order to do math, you must have the correct software on your computer. So when

you log in for the first time, you must run the Installation Wizard. The wizard will

install all the programs that you need onto your computer. Note: The computers in

the MSC have the software installed, so they can be used anytime. Complete the

tutorial: How to enter answers into the MathXL-Player.
