TIPS TO MAKE YOUR HOME FIRE SAFE





Roof



1. Remove branches within 10 feet of your chimney and dead braches

overhanging your roof or eaves.



2. Remove dead leaves and needles from your roof and gutters.



3. Cover our chimney outlet and stovepipe with a nonflammable screen of

½ inch or smaller mesh.



LANDSCAPE



1. Landscape with fire resistant plants.



2, For trees taller than 18 feet, remove lower branches within 6 feet of the

Ground. If trees are growing against your home or your neighbor’s trim the

Branches back away from the building –especially any eaves. In most

cases, when eaves catch fire, the house is destroyed. Think of yourself

and your neighbor!



3. Remove dead branches, leaves and needles from all vegetation promptly.



YARD



1. Stack woodpiles at least 30 feet from all structures and remove vegetation

within 10 feet of woodpiles.



2. Keep LPG tanks (butane and propane) at least 30 feet from any structure

and maintain 10 feet of clearance.



3. Do not keep stacks of construction materials, pine needles, leaves and

other debris in your yard.



KITCHEN



1. Keep a working fire extinguisher in the kitchen.

2. Keep baking soda on had to extinguish stove-top grease fires.



LIVING ROOM



1. Install a screen in front of the fireplace.



2. Store the ashes from your fireplace (and BBQ) in a metal container and

dispose of only when cold.



3. Clean fireplace chimneys and flues at least once a year.



4. Install and test smoke detectors in hallways and sleeping areas. Test

twice a year (i.e. when clocks are changed in the spring and fall).



GARAGE



1. Mount a working fire extinguisher in the garage.



2. Have tools such as a shovel, hoe, rake and bucket available for use

in a wildfire emergency.



3. Dispose of oily rags in approved metal containers.



4. Properly store flammable liquids in approved containers and away

from ignition sources such as pilot lights,





DEVELOP AN EMERGENCY MINI-SUPPLY KIT



Assemble a survival kit for your car, work, or for use at home in the event that

You must evacuate on foot or by car. Storing these supplies in a small day or

backpack will make them convenient to carry.



 Snack type nutritious foods such as dried fruit, nuts, granola bars,

Jerky, etc.



 Walking shoes



 Bottled water



 Small first aid kit (band-aids, disinfectant, tape, etc.) Include personal

Medications.



 Small ABC Fire Extinguisher and flares (keep inside the car trunk)



 Blanket

 Local maps and compass



 Flashlight and batteries



 Pair of heavy gloves



 Ziplock bags, toilet tissues



 Money (cash)



 If you will be leaving the car, include a battery operated radio
