EDUCATIONAL COUNSELING
Test preparation training and educational counseling are two key elements for attracting large numbers of students
on a sustained basis. This will also help to give value addition to your work while enabling you to meet the
minimum target set out in the agreement.
TEST PREPARATION TRAINING
A very useful part of recruiting work is to train students for TOEFL, SAT, GMAT, GRE and other tests. This
training activity will enable you to provide value addition to your services. There are also several training books
available in the market published by American publishers such as Petersons, Princeton Review, Kaplan, Barron's,
Arco, etc. which could be used. You may charge the students for test preparation training as per prevailing market
rates. It would also be a good idea for you to tie-up with established coaching centers for TOEFL, SAT, GMAT,
GRE, etc., so that you would have a good source of seriously interested students. Test scores must be arranged to be
sent to all institutions directly from the ETS. It is true that a few institutions do not insist on test scores. But, we
insist on every student taking TOEFL and the other relevant tests such as SAT, GMAT, GRE, etc., because Visa is
likely to be denied by the American Consulates if these tests are not taken and reasonably good scores are not
obtained. Further it is essential to obtain good scores if the student wishes to be considered for financial aid. For
admission to all graduate programs, the minimum score to be obtained is TOEFL: 213 CBT or 80 IBT, SAT: 1650,
GMAT: 550, GRE : 1200. Please note that the minimum may be much higher in some schools. For being considered
for financial aid, students with an aggregate of 80 percent marks(Grade A) in their academic record are preferred.
The minimum for consideration of financial aid is 60 percent of marks in the aggregate( Grade B). Minimum Test
scores required for financial aid are TOEFL: 600; SAT: 2000; GMAT: 700; GRE: 1350. However, please note that
there is no guarantee of financial aid even when these scores are obtained, because financial aid is determined by the
competition, availability of funds, and other factors.
EDUCATIONAL COUNSELING
Educational counseling comprises of two parts: informational and psychological(hand-holding). The psychological
aspect is particularly important because it provides a measure of confidence and comfort level to the students and
parents, in the context of their taking a major decision for sending the student half-way around the world to America
by spending substantial amount of money. We expect that you will be taking care of both aspects of educational
counseling with the assistance of a professional educational counselor. It is advisable to have a professional
education counselor at least on a part-time basis, if you are unable to afford a full time counselor. Unfortunately,
during the recruiting seminars and interviews, we are in a position to provide only the informational aspect of
counseling but not the psychological aspect because of the very limited time at our disposal. It would therefore be a
good idea for you to have an educational counselor who could also double as the trainer for test preparation. We are
giving a model of the advertisement which you may use for obtaining a suitable professional counselor.
