Rock Cycle Foldable Project
Materials Needed:
2 pieces of 8 ½ by 11 in. paper ( 1white, ½ purple, & ½ yellow)
1 piece of white 11 ½ by 18 in paper
Scissors, Glue, Notes
Directions:
Metamorphic Rock
1. Take the purple sheet of paper. Fold in half hamburger style, and shave off the
fold. Congratulations! You now have two half sheets of paper. Give one of the half
sheets of paper to your neighbor. Then, fold the paper in half again hamburger
style leaving a knuckle’s length of paper at the top. The final product should look
like diagram 1.
2. ,Label the foldable “Metamorphic rocks.” Label the first flap foliated, and the
second flap non-foliated. Under each flap write the following
a. A description of that type of metamorphic rock
b. An example of that type of rock
c. A sketch of that type of rock.
Igneous Rocks
3. Next Task, Take the white sheet of paper. Fold in half hamburger style, and shave
off the fold. Congratulations! You now have two half sheets of paper. Then, fold the
paper in half again hamburger style leaving a knuckle’s length of paper at the top.
One of the papers should be a two fold and one should be a three fold.
a. On the two tab foldable, label the foldable “Where they were formed.” Then
label the first flap extrusive, and the second flap intrusive. . Under each
flap write the following
i. Where that type of rock formed.
ii. Characteristics of that type of rock
iii. An example of that type of rock

iv. A sketch of that type of rock.
b. On the three tab foldable, label the foldable “Composition.” Then label the
first flap Basaltic, the second flap andesitic, and the third tab, granitic. .
Under each flap write the following
i. Characteristics of that type of rock
ii. Where you can typically find that type of rock
iii. An example of that type of rock
iv. A sketch of that type of rock.
Sedimentary Rock
4. Next Task, take the yellow sheet of paper. Fold in half hamburger style, and shave
off the fold. Congratulations! You now have two half sheets of paper. Give one of
the half sheets of paper to your neighbor. Then, fold the paper in half again
hamburger style leaving a knuckle’s length of paper at the top. Make it into a three
tab foldable.
a. On the three tab foldable, label the foldable “Sedimentary.” Then label the
first flap Detrital, the second flap Chemical, and the third tab, Organic. .
Under each flap write the following:
i. Characteristics of that type of rock
ii. How that rock is formed
iii. An example of that type of rock
iv. A sketch of that type of rock.
Rock Cycle
5. Next, take the large, white sheet of paper, and make a tri-fold (burrito fold) The
front flap should have the following:
a. The title: The Rock Cycle
b. In color, the rock cycle diagram

c. Name, date and block at the bottom.
d. On the back of the tri fold, write a story of Ig the Igneous rock’s journey
through the rock cycle.
6. Then, glue the metamorphic rock foldable on the left hand side of the foldable, the
two igneous rock foldables in the middle, and the sedimentary rock foldable on the
right hand side.
7. When you are finished, please turn it in for a grade.
