Psychosis
This is a mental condition including confusion and disturbance of speech and
behavior patterns.
Differential diagnosis: Patients with stagnation of phlegm may suffer from apathy,
mental dullness, incoherent speech, delusions, strange behavior, poor personal
hygiene, greasy tongue coating, and wiry and rolling pulse. Patients with heart and
spleen deficiency may suffer from forgetfulness, heart palpitations, chest distress,
sadness, weakness, pale tongue, and thready and weak pulse. Maniac patients afflicted
by the upward disturbance of phlegm-fire may suffer from impetuosity, headache,
insomnia, fierce stating and injuring others, insomnia, red tongue with yellow and
greasy coating, and wiry, large, rolling and rapid pulse. And maniac patients suffering
from depletion of Yin and excessive fire may experience fatigue, fright, endless
talking, restlessness, insomnia, pathological leanness, flushed face, red tongue, and
thready and rapid pulse. Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, manic psychosis,
depressive psychosis and menopausal. psychosis by modem medicine can be treated
by the following methods.
Treatment:
Foot massage: The massage can be applied to head (1), pituitary gland (4), thyroid
gland (12), spleen (34), heart (33), liver (18) and kidney (22) reflecting areas (Fig. 46).
Foot acupuncture:
1) Meridianal acupoints: At Pucan (BL 61), Zutonggu (BL 66), Shangqiu (SP 5),
Zhaohai (KI 6) and Shenmai (BL 62) acupoints, a strong reducing technique is
applied for stagnation of phlegm and upward disturbance of phlegmfire, and a
moderate balanced reinforce-reducing technique is applied for heart and spleen
deficiency and depletion of Yin by excessive fire. Moxibustion after acupuncture may
be applied for heart and spleen deficiency.
2) Extra acupoint: The strong reducing stimulation is applied at Nuxi (EX-F 6)
acupoint and the needle is retained for 20 minutes.
3) Foot acupoints: At Anmian (FA-P 2), Kidney (FA-P 14), Liver (FA-P 9) and Heart
(FA-P 5) acupoints, a moderate twisting stimulation is applied and the needles are
retained for 20 minutes.
