We start by covering the basics required to

understand how ICT is used in the wider world.

• How can we use validation to ensure data is good

quality?

We then go on to understand the place of ICT in

the world.



• What are the capabilities and limitations of ICT?

• What are the social, environmental and ethical

implications of ICT?

• How is ICT covered by UK law?

AS Theory

We take an in-depth look at how ICT is used in a

variety of areas.

• How hospitals use ICT for scanning and patient records.

• The ways in which business uses ICT for product

design and manufacture.

• ICT in supermarkets and online shopping.

• How ICT is used in schools for learning and

administration.

• Home uses for ICT such as entertainment and banking.

AS Theory

Finally we explore the different types of

networks essential to ICT today.



• Local and Wide Area Networks

• The Internet and Extranets

• Benefits and problems with email

• File Transfer Protocols – chat rooms,

online shopping

Spreadsheet Analysis

During the course students will create a complex spreadsheet.

As part of the exam they will take in their spreadsheet and

answer questions about it.

We will also investigate the use of computers for simulation

modelling.

In year 13 we go into more technical detail about

networks.

• Wireless networking & security

• Network management and auditing

We also cover the current technical, moral,

social and ethical issues surrounding the

internet.

• Internet access

• Privacy, censorship, ownership & control

A-Level Theory

Working with ICT is covered in a more general

sense, looking at the issues affecting all employees

regardless of industry and security policies needed.

• Tele-working and video

• Intellectual property rights

A-Level Theory

Finally we cover Management Information Systems,

the system development life cycle and the

management of change
