IPY 2007-2008
EXPRESSIONS OF INTENT EXERCISE
Around 600 Ideas for IPY activities were submitted in the first
half of 2004 and these helped shape the development of an
Outline Science Plan and later the “Framework for IPY 2007-2008”
It was recognised by the IPY Planning Group that logistics operators
needed information as soon as possible on those IPY projects
requiring substantial logistic support
This prompted a Call for Expressions of Interest made in Oct 2004
with a deadline of Jan 14, 2005
The task of the Planning Group (and its successor the Joint Committee)
is to encourage development of IPY activities that meet IPY criteria.
It is not intended that the JC critically assess the science (the task of
funding agencies) or that it tell the community what science to do. It
encourages, advises and supports the establishment of IPY projects.
An online submission facility was developed on the IPY
website to bring standardisation to submissions.
A Word document template was also created to allow groups
a convenient means of exchanging draft EoI’s before the
finalised document was submitted online.
For those having problems submitting online the Word
document could be submitted via email.
It was anticipated that the community would submit as many
as 400 proposals but it was recognised that some of the
community would want to get early consideration of their
proposal.
In the event we have received 869 EoI’s to date from 35 countries
Over 1000 submissions were made but a number of these were
repeats which were then removed from the database.
