The first step in developing a program assessment plan is to review program outcomes
and indicate how each outcome contributes to the UMD Student Learning Outcomes. It
is NOT necessary to have a program outcome map to EVERY UMD student learning
                                       outcome.
CAUTION: Do not have too many outcomes. Five or six is a good number.
Step #1. Align Program Outcomes with UMD Student Learning Outcomes (Goals)
Outcome # UMD Student Learning Outcomes…Students will be able to
SLO 1 Demonstrate competence in a major field (Knowledge)
SLO 2 Construct, integrate, and apply knowledge from instruction and experience (Knowledge)
SLO 3 Think critically and creatively in seeking solutions to practical and theoretical problems (Thinking)
SLO 4 Use ethical reasoning to make informed and principled choices (Social Responsibility and Self-Realization)
SLO 5 Demonstrate self-knowledge across a range of developmental areas (Self-Realization)
SLO 6 Communicate effectively through writing, speaking, and interpersonal and group interactions (Relationships)
SLO 7 Apply understanding of cultural differences in diverse environments (Social Responsibility)
SLO 8 Contribute to local, national, and global communities in which they live (Social Responsibility)
SLO 9 Apply life skills to succeed in college and beyond (Life Skills)

The next step is to examine the curriculum to identify where program outcomes are being addressed throughout the curriculum.
All faculty teaching in the program should participate in these discussions so that there is broad understanding of the content of
the curriculum. The delivery method, the readings, activities and assignments are all determined at the discretion of the
instructor of each course, as long as all desired program outcomes are addressed.
Step #2. Map Curriculum to Program Outcomes
                                                                                                  Instructions

List the required courses in the program. The Subj & number will automatically be transferred as column headings in the matrix below. Insert or delete rows as necessary.

NOTE: At the time these templates were prepared, the latest proposal going forward to the Educational Planning Committee from the Liberal
Education Task Force recommends that the following components of liberal education be addressed by each academic program. They have been
included here so that faculty can consider these during curriculum mapping discussions.
In addition to your program outcomes, indicate where in the curriculum these proposed liberal education components are addressed.

In this step, each program will identify the ways that outcomes will be measured, and the cycle in which the data will be collected. ALL
PROGRAM OUTCOMES must be measured at least once by the spring of 2012. Programs may consider using the Optional course template to
help identify embedded assessments that can be used in the assessment plan.

RECOMMENDATION: Initially, one direct measure of each outcome, and an indirect measure for half your outcomes is enough.
Step #3. Build the Assessment Plan
                                                                                            Instructions

List all the measures that will be used to collect data that will be used for program improvement. Include both direct (course embedded) and indirect measures (surveys,
         First -->
graduation rates, etc.). A measure does not need to be administered every year of the plan. At least 50% of the measures should be direct.

Second --> Assign an ID that will be used in the matrix below (e.g., IND-1, IND-2 for indirect measures, and DIR-1, DIR-2 for direct measures.

Measure ID Description of the measure. Be as detailed as possible; cells will expand.

Note. Program Outcomes will come over automatically from the Step #1 worksheet. Course numbers will come over automatically from the Step #2 worksheet.

Enter the Measure IDs above in cells below to indicate where the data will be collected. If it is a direct measure embedded in a course, use the column labeled with that
