Montalto Ligure
The medieval hill town Montalto Ligure was built in the 11th century. It was built around the
walls of the castle of the Count of Ventimiglia by a small group of inhabitants from the nearby
coast who sought refuge from the invasions of the Longobarde and the Saracens. Legend
has it that the village gave shelter to a newly married young couple. They were trying to
escape from the Count Oberto of Ventimiglia who had expected to exercise his right of "jus
primae noctis" or “droit du seigneur” with the young bride. Protected by many friends in the
village, they constituted the first true inhabited nucleus of Montalto (from the Latin "Mons
Autus" or enlarged mountain, in English). In anger, the Count burned down the original village
as punishment to the villagers. Even today, couples from all over the world come to Montalto
to be married in the picturesque medieval Loggia. Montalto remained under the dominion of
the Counts of Ventimiglia until the middle of the 1200’s, when in 1259 it was sold and became
a territory of the Genovese Republic and later entered as part of the state of Triora. Until the
mid 17th century the fortunes of Montalto were closely tied to those of the Republic of Genoa,
and it is probable that the village also suffered a similar loss of fortune as a consequence of
the bitter fights between the Guelfi and Ghibelline families and from barbaric pirate incursions
from the eastern Mediterranean and north Africa. The Montaltese territory was invaded by the
troops of General Massena in 1796 and was annexed to the Napoleonic Empire in 1805. In
1815 Montalto was under the reign of Sardegna governed by the Savoia family. This
annexation was part of the final phase of unification that led to the declaration of the Kingdom
of Italy in 1861.
