Named after William Vansittart.
William Vansittart was an Anglo-Irishman who built a large eight-roomed house on the south
side of Beaumont Common before 1850. Known as a gallant rider and good bushman he was
killed in November 1854 when thrown by a horse at Rivoli Bay in the south east of South
Australia.
The house was extended later and had a tower added probably in the 1880s, when owned by
the land agent K. St Barbe Miller. During the 1970s and 1980s it was a reception centre but is
now a private house. It still stands as Tower House.

Henderson’s Lane.
Origin of earlier name
Named after Thomas Henderson, the first licensee of the Vine Inn. This was probably an
informal name given to a track before being properly adopted by the council.
Origin of present name
Named after the Vine Inn which was at the Glen Osmond end of the road.
The inn which was built in 1850 comprised eleven rooms in a two storey building with a
balcony in front, three stockyards, wooden stables and a string of cottages along Vine Lane.
After Thomas Henderson’s death in 1862 his widow ran or leased the business until 1874
when she bought the Wattle Grove estate. It continued as a hotel till 1909 and was then run as
the Vine Boarding House and then as a corner shop until later in the 1900s when it was
demolished.

Origin of earlier name
When the suburb was laid out this was an unnamed lane. The Burnside Council later decided
that the lanes should have names so that they could be more easily identified.
Origin of present name
Named after Otto Von Rieben (1863 - 1949).
Otto Von Rieben made a fortune at Broken Hill and then retired to Attunga on Kensington
Road. Later he moved to Pomona at Stirling and as he and his wife were childless, he finally
bequeathed Attunga to the Burnside Council on his death.
A deed dated 14 March 1944 transfers the property subject to the permanent preservation of
the house and garden in the form of a nursing home, and from this evolved the Burnside
Memorial Hospital. The hospital is now in a more modern building but the old house still
serves other medical purposes and the garden is a public reserve..
