Map Layouts
ArcMap:
Non-related issue: Every time you start ArcMap, an Add Data window appears even you
don’t want to add layers from the beginning. You can change this setting by going to
Tools > Options and click “Application” tab and uncheck “Show Startup Dialog”. This
should solve your problem of unwanted Add.
1. Start ArcMap and bring in your existing project (your county map).
2. Your current view should be Data View. Go to View > Layout View. Then, your
current active view will turn into Layout View from Data View.
3. Use Zoom In/Out tools in Layout’s toolbar (Notes: There are two sets of zooming
tools in ArcMap. The one on the top is usually the tools for Data View and the
one on the bottom is for the use of Layout View)
Adding Title:
1. Click New Text button at the button of the window. You might want to adjust
font, font size for the title. Click on the top part of the layout and start typing title
onto the layout.
2. Move title around to find an appropriate location for it.
Adding Legend:
1. Go to Insert > Legend and click Next when Legend Wizard appears.
2. You may edit Legend Title, font size, justification and types.
3. Click Next to continue
4. When Border selection appears,
click downward arrow to bring up
the line weight selection. Similarly,
click Background or Drop
Shadow to change settlings.
5. In the remaining windows, you
may leave them unchanged and
click “Finish” to add legend to
your layout.
Add North Arrow to layout.
1. Go to Insert > North Arrow and
select one that will match your
map.
2. You may change size color and
others properties of the North Arrow.
Add Scale Bar to Layout.
1. Go to Insert > Scale Bar and select one to add to the layout.
2. Zoom in the layout (using Zoom tools for the layout, not the zoom tool for the
Data View) and you will find out that the unit is decimal degrees. That
doesn’t sound right. Let’s change the display unit.
3. Double-click on the scale bar to bring up the window for alternating scale bar
properties.
4. Select “Miles” from the Division Units and leave other properties unchanged.
5. Add acknowledgement to the
bottom left corner.
Page Setup
1. Right-click on the page to bring up the
Page Setup window.
2. Change from Portrait to Landscape or
size of the layouts.
3. Save your project.
ArcView
1. Start ArcView and you may want to open existing project from your previous
project (the project with census tract polygons on it).
2. If your theme layers hasn’t been classified, then double-click on the tract theme to
bring up the legend editor window.
3. In Legend Type, select Graduated Color and select “P001001” from the
Classification Field. Click “Classify” and select 3 from Number of classes.
Click OK to go back to the Legend Editor screen. You may select different
Color Ramp to show population.
4. Click “Apply” to go back to View 1. (you should see the change on the View 1)
5. With View 1 active, go to View > Layout….
6. When Template Manager appears, just click OK to continue. You have selected
Landscape for your layout.
7. Once the layout is created, you will find that several default items are placed on
the layout, including View 1 (title), legend and North Arrow and Scale bar.
8. You may change Title, North Arrow and scale bar by double-click them to bring
up the window.
