APPAREL DESIGN STUDIOS Several design studios provide "free-lance" designs to brand name apparel companies. These are generally former staff designers who have chosen to leverage their design track record to service multiple clients. They generally have five to eight years of experience. In the past three years, at least five design studios have opened in the active sportswear sector. The competition is intense and expected to continue. PRIVATE LABEL MANUFACTURERS In the active sportswear market the field of private label manufacturers is fragmented. Often manufacturers of single product lines such as knitwear, shirts, bodywear, and outerwear supply private label merchandise to use excess capacity in manufacturing facilities. As branded apparel sales increase, the excess capacity is expected to decrease, offering an opportunity for new entrants. Many department stores, such as those in the Federated Department Stores, have in-house private label development groups. However, opportunities exist for supplying items they are unable to manufacture, such as the exclusive European polar-fleece fabric. Gear For Sport, Inc. furnishes commodity private label merchandise. They stock thousands of garment blanks in a variety of silhouettes such as tee-shirts, sweat shirts and hats. Gear individualizes orders for customers by printing and embroidering specific styles for use in promotional products, resort destinations, golf resorts, spas, athletic teams and sporting events. The company strengths are "quick response," competitive pricing and the sales organization.
