STATEMENT OF NEED
There is much that primary care doctors can do that is not conventionally integrated into the care of a
patient with cancer. This activity will provide educational tools that will assist primary care clinicians in
treating and supporting their patients with cancer, or in ways to help prevent the occurrence or
reoccurrence of the disease. In order to know how to proceed when faced with cancer, the clinician
should know the potential processes that predispose or prevent the initiation and progression of cancer.
The intent of this program is to assist practitioners in improving their knowledge of how to stop cancer
initiation before it starts or to increase their competence in providing biologic and emotional support
both during cancer treatment and long after treatment has concluded. Our aim is to educate the
clinician by providing scientific data that will assist in the prevention and care of patients with cancer.
This program will provide opportunities for learning that will improve competence and performance in
practice. Clinicians will learn the myriad ways that lifestyle choices, underlying physiological processes,
and attitudes and beliefs can affect our patients’ risk for cancer and prospects for recovery. Participants
will acquire new practical tools that will help them both decipher the underlying antecedents and
triggers of cancer and take a more functional whole systems approach to dealing with these
multifaceted conditions.
INTENDED AUDIENCE
This course has been developed to address the needs of oncologists, primary care physicians, and other
healthcare practitioners such as DCs, NDs, RDs NPs, and nutritionists.
