Making Meaningful Medicines--and Beyond
Our scientists are working every day to develop new medicines to fight diseases. Our investment in research and development increased to more than $5 billion in 2007. Globally, we doubled the number of our Phase III, or what we call largescale patient clinical trials, in our overall pipeline during 2007. We are further extending our commitment to cutting-edge research and development with a $100 million expansion of our Waltham, Massachusetts' facility to accommodate up to 100 additional researchers focused on discovering treatments for infectious diseases and cancer.

Every day AstraZeneca is working hard to improve health in all of our communities. In 2007 alone, we contributed more than $47 million to hundreds of US nonprofit organizations. We also helped nearly half a million people fill 2.8 million prescriptions resulting in more than $500 million of savings to patients.

Affordable Medicines
Our AZ&Me™ Prescription Savings helps qualified patients access the AstraZeneca medicines they need and information that can help them stay healthy. In the past six years, our patient assistance programs have provided more than $3 billion in savings to patients throughout the US and Puerto Rico who need help affording their medicines. The programs also provide one-on-one education and information designed to help all individuals identify and access health and medicine coverage and services for which they may be eligible. Those who qualify for the AZ&Me™ Prescription Savings program for people without insurance can receive up to a 90-day supply of AstraZeneca medicine, free of charge, delivered directly to their home. In addition, the AZ&Me™ Prescription Savings program for people with Medicare Part D provides significant savings to qualifying people who are enrolled in Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage plans and are having difficulty affording their AstraZeneca medicines.
Partnering to Prevent Disease
AstraZeneca supports the American Cancer Society, and has made contributions to build two AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Centers, which will provide free temporary lodging and support services for cancer patients who must travel for outpatient treatment to Boston and Philadelphia. We also provide health education information to millions of Americans through public awareness campaigns like National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), the American Heart Association Start! walking program and the AstraZeneca Cancer Support Network (AZCSN), which provides free support to patients in more than 100 languages. We believe patients across the country should be afforded health tools and resources to manage conditions from prevention of a disease through wellness. We at AstraZeneca devote considerable resources to nationwide programs that meet these criteria, like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Connection, a mutual support program for people with mental illness available in English and Spanish. These are examples of some of the programs we carry out in communities across the United States. And we do more.
Access to Quality Healthcare
AstraZeneca believes everyone should have access to affordable healthcare. In our home state of Delaware, we are collaboratively partnering with dozens of organizations statewide on “Healthy Delawareans Today & Tomorrow.” This program is dedicated to help Delaware's uninsured children and families gain access to needed free or low-cost healthcare services they need to lead healthier, happier lives.
Wellness with our Employees
As a healthcare company dedicated to improving the lives of people all over the world, our job starts with our own employees. We're proud that AstraZeneca was among the first six companies to receive CEO Gold Standard Accreditation by the CEO Roundtable on Cancer, recognizing the ongoing actions we take to promote cancer-prevention initiatives among employees and their dependents. We were also named the first recipient of the American Heart Association's “FitFriendly Company” award, which recognizes companies that are taking a lead to support corporate wellness initiatives that encourage employees to incorporate exercise into their workday. We are one of three-dozen US employers recognized by the National Business Group on Health for our innovative efforts to battle obesity and promote a healthy work environment for our employees. In addition, AstraZeneca was recognized on FORTUNE's “100 Best Companies to Work For” list, receiving special mention for our on-site wellness programs, fitness center and other amenities available to our employees including childcare.
