a/ Per capita taxable sales were derived by dividing first quarter self-assessed taxable sales by the population estimates of the State Department of
Finance for January 1. The populations used were 37,195,240 for 2006 and 37,662,518 for 2007.
b/ Some permittees, by the nature of their business, are not required to allocate local sales or use tax to specific local jurisdictions. Their taxable transac-
tions are listed under the column headed "Unallocated" in Table 2. Contractors and manufacturers generate most of the countywide unallocable

Notes concerning permits:
Permits are tabulated twice a year: as of January 1 and July 1. The number of sales tax permits is printed in the second- and fourth-quarter reports
for counties and the first- and third-quarter reports for cities. A sales tax permit is required for each place of business operated by all manufacturers,
wholesalers, and retailers of tangible personal property except those dealing solely in nontaxable commodities.
