S Does not meet publication standards. 1/Includes hydrogenated fats (vegetable and animal) and other fats and oils in process (e.g., refined cottonseed includes stocks of stearin). 2/Production of refined oils covers only once-refined oils. Degummed soybean oil is reported as crude oil. 3/Consumption in feed is reported by renderers and fat reprocessors as shipments for consumption of inedible tallow and grease for use in livestock and poultry feed. 4/Includes raw and boiled linseed oil. 5/Includes linseed oil other than raw and boiled. 6/The use of whole or crude tall oil in the distillation or fractionization process is reported as consumed in fatty acids. The production represents refined tall oil and distilled tall oil containing less than 90 percent free fatty acids not including resin acids.

Historical Note Prior to 1998, the surveys M20K (Fats and Oils– Production, Consumption and Stocks) and M20J (Fats and Oils-Oilseed Crushings) were published together on an annual basis. Prior to 1991, data were collected on a monthly crop year basis starting from September 1 and ending on August 31. In 1991, data were collected on a quarterly calendar year basis starting on January 1 and ending on December 31. Currently, data are collected on a monthly calendar year basis starting from January 1 and ending on December 31. The Census Bureau has collected data on fats and oils since 1919. Historical Current Industrial Reports data (called Facts for Industry before 1959) may be obtained from a Federal Depository Library.
