2011 Leadership Boot Camp ................................................................................................. Sheryll Nall

August 3, 2011

Columbus, OH

Have you recently had one of those ah-ha moments? You know, the moment when the light bulb goes

off in your brain? Well, that is just what I experienced when I attended the 2011 Leadership Boot

Camp that was held in Columbus, Ohio. The training session provided a very detailed overview of all

the chapter positions and their responsibilities. In addition, there was a session lead by Christine Simo-

ne, CPS/CAP, Division Corresponding Secretary, on how to access the IAAP website and our Ohio Divi-

sion site, for publications from the Buckeye Broadcaster, for a vast array of helpful information. That

was really worth the price of admission! I also was enlightened by the detailed training on strategic

planning from Amy House, CPS/CAP, Division & Chapter Relations Coordinator. The most important

thing that was reinforced in my mind was to, “write it down”. However, the most valuable learning

moments were riding in the car with Laura Abood, CPS, current Treasurer, Joanne Harm, CPS, a past

president, and Josephine Johnson-Sherard, CPS/CAP, current President! What a wealth of information

these ladies provided! I may not be quite ready to take on a board position, but I feel I have a better

understanding of the importance of each position and how they can impact the Chapter’s growth.

2011 EFAM (Montreal, Canada) DELEGATE REPORT By: Lora A. Oborn, CPS

July 24 – 27, 2011

“Loonies, Toonies, and Nickels, Oh My!”

Saturday, July 23rd at 5:00 a.m., the morning air was crisp and cool. The car was loaded and the sun was getting

ready to peak over the horizon. We were ready for our 10-12 hour adventure. Before I knew it we were out of

Ohio and almost through Pennsylvania. Up until this point we did not have problems – unfortunately, that was

about to change.

We stopped for lunch in New York at a local Taco Bell (where my son suggested) located in a little shopping area

in front of a Wal-Mart. Lunch was finished so we climbed back into the car and the GPS rerouted us on a scenic

route. About 10-15 minutes away from the restaurant, my husband panics as he reaches in his back pocket to

find he left his wallet in the booth at Taco Bell. As you can imagine, we drove back like maniacs – both our blood

pressures sky rocketed off the charts I’m sure, as he had all our cash, credit cards, his driver’s license and our

passport cards in his wallet – what was supposed to be a pleasant trip to Montreal had just turned into a night-

mare! We would have had to turn around and head home. Thankfully, someone had turned in the wallet and

EVERYTHING was still in his wallet – whew! You want to talk about almost having a heart attack!!

We arrive at the border of the United States and Canada and went through customs without any problems.

As we arrived in downtown Montreal you could feel the excitement of the city. We passed the Le Palais des con-

gres Convention Center which was huge. Our hotel, Delta Centre-ville was located approximately 4-5 blocks from

the convention center. We checked into the hotel, our room was on the 25 th floor. We unpacked and freshened

up as we feverishly tried to make it to “new attendees” orientation and to register. Unfortunately, I missed most

of the orientation and only made the last 10 minutes which was already the question and answer portion. My

husband apologized for the inconvenience he caused by leaving his wallet in New York – I told him not to worry; I

would be fine because I had met several ladies at ODAM who were also attending EFAM. Mary Jo Cline from the

Indian Trails Chapter was my main contact and main support person – without her I don’t think I would have

made it through all the Business Sessions and the whole conference in general. I owe her a BIG Thank You!!

Sunday, July 24th and Monday, July 25th Business Sessions were kicked off by Parliamentarian, Jeff Neurauter,

who went over the rules for voting and that we would be voting for two RTF Trustees. His presentation was fol-

lowed by the Parade of Nations which consisted of all the flags of the nations – it was beautiful. The 2011 Inter-

national Education Forum and Annual Meeting of the International Association of Administrative Professionals

was called to order on Sunday, July 24, 2011, at 9:15 a.m. by President Mary Ramsay-Drow, CPS/CAP.

Tuesday, July 26 (8:30-10:00) – Morning keynote speaker, Clinton Kelly, Making A Great First Impression,

sponsored by Hammermill Paper – was so much fun! He had great ideas on how to make a great first impres-

sion and how to dress for success, but not break the bank doing it! He said there are three different types of

“no-no” dress types: 1) Frumps – these women have forgotten about themselves and want NO attention, 2)

Sluts – these women want ALL the attention they can get whether it’s positive or negative, and 3) Freaks –

these women wear ANYTHING to get attention from anyone.

12

2011 EFAM (Montreal, Canada) DELEGATE REPORT By: Lora A. Oborn, CPS

July 24 – 27, 2011

He brought volunteers up on stage and pointed out why they shouldn’t be wearing the outfits they were

wearing – everyone was good sports about the whole thing. The volunteers were laughing along with every-

one in the audience – and even Clinton was a little embarrassed by some of these women.

The top 10 questions asked of Clinton are:

10. How do I look good without looking overdressed? – Don’t worry about others – he suggests putting on a

blouse with your favorite jeans instead of a t-shirt and putting on a jacket instead of a hoodie or sweat-

shirt.

9. What do I do about my sloppy husband? Honey, you married him – you’re gonna have to figure out what

to do with him!

8. What do I do about my boobs? Your breasts should land ½ way between your shoulder and elbow and

have a professional bra fitting – brings those girls up!

7. What do I do about my butt? Divide and concur – your shirts should be worn ½ way down just below your

hips and above your butt.

6. How do I find the perfect jeans to wear? You will need to try on at least 20 pairs of jeans before you find

the perfect pair. Find a pair that makes your butt look cute. There are 4 different types of jeans out there –

1) Skinny – these are for skinny girls and are form fitting around the hip, thigh and butt, 2) Straight Leg –

these are straight cut from the knee to the ankle, 3) Boot cut – new boy jean, majority wider knee to ankle

fit like straight leg jean, and finally 4) the Trouser jean works for EVERY woman!

5. High Heels? Wear comfortable shoes, wear a wedge or stacked heel for a longer, thinner looking you.

There are of course very cute flat, non-athletic shoes for summer and get a good boot for winter. Shoes set

the tone – don’t ruin an outfit by wearing the wrong shoe.

4. What about panty hose? Make sure to match your hose to your skin color – the whole idea is to look like

you aren’t wearing anything – not to make it look like your legs are tan while the rest of your body is

“white”!

3. How do I look good without spending a lot of money? Looking stylish doesn’t take a lot of money. Don’t

just wear labeled cloths this can mean you are insecure. Make sure your cloths fit well and make you feel

good. When you go shopping use the “BASE” knowledge (B) Body – does it fit, (A) Age appropriate, (S) Situ-

ational – where are you wearing it, (E) Expense – is it within your budget. He also suggests cleaning out

your closets 2X a year! Try on every single piece of clothing if it’s too tight or too big or out of style give it

away. Separate your clothes into work, weekend and/or evening.

13

2011 EFAM (Montreal, Canada) DELEGATE REPORT By: Lora A. Oborn, CPS

July 24 – 27, 2011

2. How can I hide my tummy? Wear a silhouette jacket to help camouflage your tummy. Put some strength

up around your shoulders (bring eyes up). Also, believe it or not, get a good bra; you clearly see separa-

tion from your breasts and your tummy. “A” line under boobs with a button or twist on them; help to di-

vide and conquer! Wear “Shape wear” or “Spanks”, etc…

1. How do I dress in an age appropriate way? Ask yourself these questions: 1) does this show too much

cleavage in a.m.? 2) Am I showing too much leg? Too high cut? Wear shorts that are mid-thigh to knee

cut, 3) Is my belly button showing? NEVER have this happen, and 4) Would a hooker look at this outfit as

a trend? Do ½ and ½ classic jeans and trendy top.

Colors – Beige is great if you have good skin or do a bright color under the beige. Color, pattern, texture

can all make you look fabulous. Orange makes blue eyes pop. Colors should make you feel good!

He was very knowledgeable and a joy to listen to – and his suggestions were awesome. You can find many of

Tuesday, July 26 (1-4 pm) – Session #451 The Power to See Ourselves As Others See Us, Rebecca Pace

Rebecca was presenting in a very casual top and Capri pants and flip flops because the airline had lost her lug-

gage – and let me tell you she was hilarious! She turned a negative into a positive for her and for us. Little did I

know that this would be the start of a fun and laughter-filled afternoon. Here is some of the advice she gave us:

 Fall in love with me

 Own the yucky, wonderful, smart, and not so smart side of you

 You’ve got to market you all the time – Draw people to your gifts

 People are attracted to confidence

 What am I doing to make sure the world knows what I’m doing?

 40% of information is lost

 Fun, creative, challenging, organizing, make people laugh, win – keep your gifts fresh to the world (these are

my “gifts” above) find your gifts!

 In life who are you? I have the talent in me!

 Don’t watch your weaknesses – do what’s right – repeat those talents (Mohamed Ali went out when he was

a winner and on top)

 You are memorable, plugged in and will not burn out and

 Start listening to your strengths

There are 4 quadrants of types of people:

Director – Do not sit down in their office; stay on feet, tilt forward, brief and quick. Has a to do list to get

done – tend to be more leaders

2011 EFAM (Montreal, Canada) DELEGATE REPORT By: Lora A. Oborn, CPS

July 24 – 27, 2011

Tuesday, July 26 (5:00-6:00 pm) Keynote Evening Speaker, Sponsored by OfficeTeam: A Kick In The Attitude: Re-

charge Your Work And Life, Sam Glenn

Sam Glenn, The Attitude Guy, shared how he turned his life around. He gave us tips on how to energize your work

and life, and how to get people positively charged for taking action and achieving positive results. His experience,

advice and research are guaranteed to improve morale, create happier and healthier work environments, de-

crease stress and empower you to reach all the goals you set for yourself.

http://samglenn.com/

Sam started out doing a chalk drawing of a lighthouse which turned out beautiful and I believe was auctioned off

for $4,000 and proceeds went to the R&E fund. His high energy and enthusiasm for life was so powerful. Okay,

now, I wasn’t able to take too many notes because I was laughing so hard. He turned his negative life experiences

into positives with laughter. I felt like I was at a comedy club, there were ladies crying from laughing so hard, and

my cheeks actually ached from laughing (between Rebecca’s 3 ½ hours of laughing and learning to this!) “Sam

gets it when it comes to attitude. A Kick in the Attitude will jumpstart what everybody needs for success – a great

attitude.” Dr. Charles Stone, pastor and author

Here are a few of Sam’s outtakes from some of his other speeches he’s given – I hope you enjoy them as much as

we all did:

I purchased “A Kick In the Attitude” from Amazon and you can too – here’s the link for all his books, and learning

tools:

All in all, my first EFAM experience was very exciting and exhausting! If you can get to either a Spring meeting or

an International one – I highly recommend it!! I’m going to sign off for now, but feel free to email me

(lora.oborn@oeconnection.com) I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have.
