Munich Massacre Lesson Plan
Goals:
Students will learn about the 1972 Munich Olympics.
Students will learn about the terrorist attacks against the Israeli Olympic
Team.
Objective:
Students will share out anything they know about the 1972 Olympics,
watch a PowerPoint, and play a trivia game to check their understanding.
Introduction:
The Munich Massacre was a terrorist attack during the 1972 Summer
Olympics when members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage
and murdered. A Palestinian group demanded that Palestinian prisoners
that were being held in Israeli were to be released in return for hostages
they held in Munich, Germany. The government refused to meet these
demands. Five of the eight members of Black September were killed in an
attempted rescue. Three surviving terrorists were captured, but later
released following the high jacking of a Lufthansa airliner, in which Black
September ordered. The Israeli athletes were targeted because they were
symbolic representatives of Israel and of Israel’s policies.

Students will share out their answers to the following question:
o What is the primary objective of the Winter Olympics? How do you
think a terrorist attack would affect the Olympic events?

Conclusion:
Students will participate in a trivia game with questions highlighting what
they learned throughout the PowerPoint and to test their knowledge of
the Munich Massacre.
