Jacelyn Angkasa
Head Prefect
58th exco, GESS Prefectorial Board
Speech By Jacelyn Angkasa
When I was informed that I had been selected as
the future Head Prefect, my initial reaction was one
of surprise. I was thankful for the opportunity, but I
was not entirely sure if I would be able to serve to
the best of my ability. After careful consideration
however, I decided that I would accept the position
and do my best to serve the Prefectorial Board and
Gan Eng Seng School, since the Prefectorial Board
is a service CCA that exists for the good of the
school.

This year, our theme is CIP. I know that sounds
familiar, but I am not referring to the Community
Involvement Programme, although that is important
too. The Prefectorial Board CIP stands for
„Committed Inspirational Prefects‟. We are prefects
that will set an example for excellence, and to
achieve excellence, one first has to be committed.
When we carry out our duties responsibly,
punctually and cheerfully, our spirit will no doubt
inspire other Gessians to give of their best.

Of course, I am aware that without clear goals,
and specific, workable plans to attain those
goals, one will be like a ship that has set sail
with no destination. A cruise to nowhere is fun
in the short term, but I think we should bear in
mind the bigger picture. What sort of impact
should the Prefectorial Board have, and what
sort of role should we play?

With that in mind, I thought of using 3Cs as a
guideline for the 58th ex-co serving alongside
me, and all our junior and senior prefects. The
3Cs I now suggest to you stand for Conviction,
Competence and Commitment. These 3Cs are
linked, and would be less effective and
convincing if any were missing. Let me now
elaborate on each of these traits I hope you and
I will possess and embody.
Head Prefect, 58th exco, Prefectorial Board
Speech By Jacelyn Angkasa
The first C stands for „conviction‟. To have
Conviction is to be brave enough to say and do
what is right, even if it is difficult to, even if the
majority disagrees, even if there is an easier way
out, even if it makes us unpopular. As Sir Winton
Churchill said so many years ago: Success is never
final. Failure is never fatal. Courage is what
counts. It is important, as a prefect, to take a stand,
and to uphold the good name and good work of the
Prefectorial Board. Do not allow yourselves to be
easily and unduly influenced –instead, see if you
can influence others to follow in your footsteps.

Speech By Jacelyn Angkasa
The next C stands for „competence‟. The fact
that you are wearing the prefects‟ badge is a
sign that someone spotted your potential to
discharge of your duties effectively, efficiently
and responsibly. You possess the ability and the
heart to serve the school.
Head Prefect, 58th exco, Prefectorial Board
Speech By Jacelyn Angkasa
The last C stands for „commitment‟. Commitment
will guide you through long days, through obstacles,
past fear and doubt, and make you stay on, hang
on and press on. I know that a committed prefect
wants to give of his or her best each and every
single day. Let us remember that although desire is
the key to motivation, it is determination and a
commitment to excellence that will enable us to
attain the success we desire.
The 3Cs are reflected in the Prefectorial Board
vision and mission for 2009. I would like to share
them with you.
Head Prefect, 58th exco, Prefectorial Board
Speech By Jacelyn Angkasa
Our Vision: Every Prefect shall have courage of
conviction, and competence to accomplish. We
shall have faith in our PB family and be committed
in all that we do.
Our Mission: Every Prefect is of good character, a
capable leader who leads with commitment. We
strive to achieve excellence, working with zeal and
courage. Together, with Pride and Honour, we will
serve GESS, striving ever ONWARD.
Head Prefect, 58th exco, Prefectorial Board
Speech By Jacelyn Angkasa
In addition, I hope that you will commit the 58th
exco‟s motto to heart. The motto is „LEAD WITH
COMMITMENT‟.
My dearest exco, commitment is the enemy of
resistance, for it is the serious promise to press
on, to get up, no matter how many times you are
knocked down. It is important for the 58th exco to
lead the PB with commitment, with passion and
with vigour. As leaders among leaders, we have to
walk the talk.
Head Prefect, 58th exco, Prefectorial Board
Speech By Jacelyn Angkasa
All great leaders share one similar trait: their
willingness to confront the major anxiety of their
people in their time. I hope that I will have that
essence of leadership in me in time to come,
and to be able to lead all of you well, leading
with conviction, competence and commitment.
Head Prefect, 58th exco, Prefectorial Board
Speech By Jacelyn Angkasa
I look forward to a rewarding year with you, my
fellow prefects. I would like to leave you with a
meaningful saying before I end my speech. If
we are striving, if we are working, if we are
trying, to the best of our ability, to improve day
by day, then we are in the line of our duty.
Today is the first day of a fruitful and exciting
year for us. Let us motivate and support one
another to strive ever onward. Thank you.

Vice-Head Prefect
58th exco, GESS Prefectorial Board
Speech By Felicia Lee Wanling
The Prefectorial Board in Gan Eng Seng School
has lasted for 56 years. We have a long and rich
history, and to sustain and uphold the good name
and good work of the board, we require the
dedication, commitment and passion of each and
every prefect. The willingness to serve, and to
give of our best will ensure that we continue to be
part of a meaningful legacy.
Vice-Head Prefect, 58th exco, Prefectorial Board
Speech By Felicia Lee Wanling
Leadership is not always easy. There will come a
time when you are torn between duty and
friendship, the easy way out and your conscience.
It is easy to run away from our problems, but
whenever you feel that way, I urge you to
remember that from failures have come important
successes, and that we should never be afraid to
try.
Vice-Head Prefect, 58th exco, Prefectorial Board
Speech By Felicia Lee Wanling
Failure can be painful, but a painful lesson is far
better than no lesson learnt at all. Do not give up
when you encounter difficulties, but do not be
reckless either. Face up to your responsibilities
bravely, calmly and confidently, and you will be
able to conquer all obstacles that stand in your
way.
Vice-Head Prefect, 58th exco, Prefectorial Board
Speech By Felicia Lee Wanling
As prefects, we must be role models to all. We
must inspire GESSians to be like us, the leaders
of the school, in every way. If you are having
doubts about being able to do that, today is the
day you erase those doubts from your mind and
have faith and diligence that you are up to the
task. Let us be the best that we can be we are the
best the school can offer. I trust that you will not
let our teachers, your peers, your juniors and
most importantly, yourselves down.
Vice-Head Prefect, 58th exco, Prefectorial Board
Speech By Felicia Lee Wanling
To my Sec 3s:
I know some of you may be encountering
doubts and difficulties but I hope you will find
the courage within yourselves to persevere to
the very end. Let us all graduate together next
year as prefects of Gan Eng Seng School.
Vice-Head Prefect, 58th exco, Prefectorial Board
Speech By Felicia Lee Wanling
To my Sec 2s:
Do not succumb to peer pressure. Stand for
what is right and do what you can to the best of
your ability. You have greatness in you. Go and
discover and unleash that greatness.
Vice-Head Prefect, 58th exco, Prefectorial Board
Speech By Felicia Lee Wanling
To my Sec 1s:
You are the newest addition to the prefect
family. I would like you to remember that help
will be given to those who ask for it. Never feel
alone, because we are all here with you, and we
are all in this together.
Vice-Head Prefect, 58th exco, Prefectorial Board
Speech By Felicia Lee Wanling
If all else fails, just bear in mind Spiderman's
words. “With great power, comes great
responsibility.” Before you do anything, think of
the consequences of your actions. Let these
words guide you in your actions, thoughts and
behaviour the way Peter Parker kept himself
focused on what was important. Thank you.
