02.00.04 MIKE: Yeah, um, this is the guy wi-, with the kayak incident
here.
911 OPERATOR: Yes.
MIKE: I’m waiting on the Coast Guard. We just wanna make
sure, uh, air, uh, air rescue’s gonna be ready to take her.
This is super serious.
911 OPERATOR: Hold on one second, sir.
MIKE: Then I’ll hold the phone.
(PAUSE)
911 OPERATOR: I’m gonna try to (CALL BEING TRANSFERRED).
Coast Guard.
MIKE: Hello?
911 OPERATOR: Yes, I’m gonna try to transfer you back over to
Coast Guard. I’m gonna stay on the line also.
MIKE: Okay.
1
WHEN FISH ATTACK II – 911 CALL – TAPE #10-116012-2
COAST GUARD: Coast Guard station (Marathon?) (INDISTINCTIVE).
02.00.47 MIKE: Hey, th-, th-, this is Mike, the guy with the kayak
incident over here in, north of Big Pine.
COAST GUARD: Yes, how are you doing, Mike?
MIKE: Well, we’re not doing good. We’re not seeing any help,
and I wanna make sure that air rescue’s gonna be available.
This is super serious.
COAST GUARD: Okay, we’re in the process of doing that, sir,
but you gotta understand that, um, from where we launch at our
station to where your position is, I mean, it’s gonna be a
good 15 minutes. Um—
MIKE: Okay. You said 5 or 10 minutes a minute ago, so.
02.01.13 COAST GUARD: Well, we’re, we’re in the water, sir. We’re, uh,
we’re currently on our way, uh, but while I have you on the
phone, can I get some more information from you that’s gonna
help this go a lot faster?
MIKE: Yes.
COAST GUARD: Alright, can, um, can I have the age of, um,
the, uh, victim, please?
MIKE: For-, forty-five.
COAST GUARD: Forty-five. Female, correct?
2
WHEN FISH ATTACK II – 911 CALL – TAPE #10-116012-2
MIKE: Yes.
COAST GUARD: Nationality?
MIKE: Uh, she’s Caucasian.
COAST GUARD: Is there, um, how long ago was she injured?
MIKE: About 20 minutes.
COAST GUARD: Twenty minutes ago? Okay, uh—
MIKE: (INDISTINCTIVE)
COAST GUARD: Is she taking any, uh, medication at this time,
sir?
MIKE: No.
02.01.59 COAST GUARD: Alright. Any, uh, previous medical history?
MIKE: Nothing. Low blood sugar.
COAST GUARD: So, um, alright, um—
KARRI: Sir?
COAST GUARD: Yes, ma’am?
02.02.19 KARRI: Are you gonna, do you have everything set up to g-, to
immediately put me up to take me up to Miami? Are you already
doing that, too?
3
WHEN FISH ATTACK II – 911 CALL – TAPE #10-116012-2
COAST GUARD: Yes, that’s what w-, I’m gathering the
information so I can send that through right now, ma’am.
KARRI: Absolutely, because I, I don’t feel like this is gonna
go very well, and I just wanna (TALKS OVER) toss that in the
back of my mind that I know that’s the next step.
COAST GUARD: Okay, uh, how’s your, uh, respiratory right now?
Are you—
02.02.45 KARRI: There’s a lot of pressure on the left side and a lot
of pressure in my chest on the left side, in the back and in
the front. I’m not sure how far it wen-, it, that fish went
through me.
COAST GUARD: Okay.
MIKE: She’s got, I got my hand on it. She’s got broken ribs.
COAST GUARD: Okay, alright. Alright, uh—
MIKE: Um, com-, compound fracture. She’s shaking, and she’s
in shock. She’s starting to go into shock. She’s, she’s a EMT,
so she’s level headed, but.
02.03.16 COAST GUARD: Yeah, I understand, sir. So, she’s got a, she
got a weak pulse right now, would you say?
MIKE: Um, I haven’t taken her pulse. I don’t have any EMT
skills.
4
WHEN FISH ATTACK II – 911 CALL – TAPE #10-116012-2
COAST GUARD: Okay. So—
MIKE: But I would assume that, you know, she’s, she’s, she’s
lost some blood, and obviously we just need to get help.
COAST GUARD: Okay.
MIKE: Okay.
COAST GUARD: Um, how much, how much blood, uh, approximately
do you think you’ve lost, ma’am?
02.03.38 KARRI: N-, no, I, I don’t know. I don’t think it’s that much
as far as I can see, but I can’t see behind me, and I don’t
know what’s in the towel.
COAST GUARD: Okay.
KARRI: Um, the, the pressure in my chest is what I’m
concerned with.
COAST GUARD: Okay.
KARRI: I’m assuming I have a punctured lung because it’s
getting harder and harder for me to breathe.
COAST GUARD: Okay.
02.04.00 MIKE: I could, I could hear air pockets, air, air gasping
through the hole before I put my hand on it, and if my hand
doesn’t stay in the right spot, it would do it again.
5
WHEN FISH ATTACK II – 911 CALL – TAPE #10-116012-2
COAST GUARD: Okay, sir. Alright, um, let’s see. Alright, can
I get her full name, please?
MIKE: If at all possible, can we get the helicopter lift over
here?
COAST GUARD: Yes, sir, that’s what I’m, I’m, I’m filling out
the MediVac, uh, (TALKS OVER) (INDISTINCTIVE)
911 OPERATOR: Okay, you have – Coast Guard, this is (...?) on
the line also. Is there anything you need me to do?
02.04.25 COAST GUARD: Um, we’re currently, I’m taking down all the
information I can, ma’am. Uh, we’re gonna try to put through a
MediVac check sheet. We’re gonna send that out to our sector.
Hopefully we’ll get a helo down there ASAP.
MIKE: Any sheriff’s department, any EMT you could get to me
would be fantastic. Anybody that you—
COAST GUARD: What we wanna do is try to have EMS meet us at,
uh, Bahia Honda State Park.
911 OPERATOR: Bahia Honda? (TALKS OVER) I’m gonna get (...?).
02.04.46 MIKE: Well, I’ve got, I’ve got no skills. If you could put a
EMT on board, on board a, a sheriff’s boat or marine patrol
boat and get ‘em to me, that’d be the best fuckin’ thing.
COAST GUARD: Okay.
911 OPERATOR: Okay, hold, sir.
6
WHEN FISH ATTACK II – 911 CALL – TAPE #10-116012-2
COAST GUARD: Ma’am, I mean, uh, not Bahia Honda. Dolphin
Marina.
911 OPERATOR: Dolphin Marina, got you.
COAST GUARD: Yes, ma’am.
911 OPERATOR: We need medics at Dolphin Marina.
COAST GUARD: Yes, yes, correct. Yes, ma’am.
911 OPERATOR: How long is it gonna be before you guys get
there, do you know?
02.05.10 COAST GUARD: Um, our boat just left our station here within
the last 5 minutes. It’s gonna take us another 10, 15 minutes
to get to where she’s at and then another, the turnaround from
there. It’ll probably be within tw-, twenty-five to thirty
minutes.
911 OPERATOR: Okay.
MIKE: There’s no marine patrol in the area that could a, a,
a, a medic on board and get ‘em to me?
COAST GUARD: Uh—
MIKE: I mean, I, I’m out here, you know, I think the sooner
that happens the better our chances are.
7
WHEN FISH ATTACK II – 911 CALL – TAPE #10-116012-2
COAST GUARD: I only know what Coast Guard access we have out
there, sir.
MIKE: I, I’m not talking to you. I was talking to the, uh,
the, the (...?).
KARRI: Radio and ask for (...?).
02.05.43 MIKE: (BACKGROUND TALKING) Yeah, uh, you know, yeah, marine
radio. If anybody’s got EMT, uh, you know. If we could get
anybody over here that’s got EMT training, you know, that
would be real great. Any medical training at all on board a
boat nearby us. The sooner you can get (...?). We’ve been
sitting here for 20 minutes.
COAST GUARD: No, I understand, sir. Um, we have, um—
02.06.07 MIKE: We know you’re doing what you can, you can do, but
we’re hoping somebody on the, on the other end there, the, the
public end—
COAST GUARD: I was also just informed that an, uh, FWC
vessel’s, uh, is, is gonna be coming to your position also.
I’m not sure exactly what the ETA is on that.
MIKE: Everybody that ever gets here first is gonna save her
life.
COAST GUARD: Yup. Yes, sir. Um, how’s her breathing right
now, sir?
8
WHEN FISH ATTACK II – 911 CALL – TAPE #10-116012-2
02.06.34 MIKE: It’s not great, man. She’s got a big ass hole in her
chest, you know? Here, hold on. Here, here’s—
KARRI: It’s getting, it, it’s all on the left side. It’s
getting so that it feels like something’s completely bust
through on my chest on the left side.
COAST GUARD: Do, do you think you have a punctured lung?
KARRI: I do.
MIKE: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
02.06.56 COAST GUARD: Okay. Alright, alright. She’s going into shock.
Uh, is there, do you have any, uh, skin color change? Does she
have any change in her skin color, sir?
MIKE: No. She’s shaking. She’s shaking, but she’s not, I
don’t, I don’t notice any change. I, I can’t, I’m sitting
behind her in a kayak. I don’t have the best (...?). (PAUSE)
Both, fingertips are numb, both hands the fingertips are numb.
02.07.28 COAST GUARD: Alright, can I, can I get her full name, please?
MIKE: It’s Karri, K-A-R-R-I.
COAST GUARD: Yup.
MIKE: Larson. L-A-R-S-O-N.
COAST GUARD: Okay. Alright. Um, (PAUSES).
9
WHEN FISH ATTACK II – 911 CALL – TAPE #10-116012-2
02.07.59 KARRI: By the way, just so you know, it helps just hearing
you guys doing stuff in the background.
COAST GUARD: Yup.
KARRI: (INDISTINCTIVE)
COAST GUARD: Whoops, can you say that again, ma’am?
KARRI: I said just so you know it really helps just hearing
you guys in the background do stuff because I—
02.08.12 COAST GUARD: Yeah, we’re, yeah, we’re definitely, we’re
coordinating here. We’re, I mean, this is what we do. We’re
trying to get out to you as fast as we can. Um, just, you
know, hold on.
(INDISTINCTIVE BACKGROUND TALKING)
02.08.43 COAST GUARD: Okay. How’s the, uh, is there, how’s the wind,
uh, the wind state out there right now? You, you got heavy
winds or—
MIKE: No, it’s calm winds. It’s about (10?) miles an hour out
of the northeast.
COAST GUARD: Okay.
02.08.55 MIKE: And, uh, yeah, we’re sitting really close to the
boating channel through here. I’m sitting like on a grassy
bank right next to it, so, um, you know, when they get here I
10
WHEN FISH ATTACK II – 911 CALL – TAPE #10-116012-2
can, I can definitely get over to, you know, a boat, where a
boat can get to.
COAST GUARD: Okay. We’re gonna, we’re gonna need a MediVac.
Hold on, sir.
(INDISTINCTIVE BACKGROUND TALKING)
02.09.45 COAST GUARD: Our boat’s en route. We’re trying to, uh—
911 OPERATOR: I’m on the phone with a patient and Coast Guard
now. I’m still on the phone.
COAST GUARD: What’s she, what’s she saying, ma’am?
911 OPERATOR: Mike?
MIKE: Yeah.
911 OPERATOR: Okay, we have a chief that’s at Dolphin Marina.
Can you see them from where you’re at?
MIKE: No, Dolphin Marina’s on the Atlantic side.
911 OPERATOR: The Atlantic side, uh-huh.
MIKE: And I’m on the Gulf side.
911 OPERATOR: He’s on the Gulf side, so.
02.10.15 MIKE: What they would, what they, I don’t know how they’re
gonna get here exactly ‘cause I, I’m not a boater, but, um,
11
WHEN FISH ATTACK II – 911 CALL – TAPE #10-116012-2
we’re, like, just north of, of, uh, Parrotdise on Ramrod Key,
I’m sorry, not Ramrod, on Little Torch Key. They, they’re on
the, uh, Dolphin Marina’s on Little Torch Key, but they’re on
the Gulf side. I need h-, I need him to come over to, I’m
sorry, they’re on the Atlantic side. I need him to come over
to the Gulf side.
911 OPERATOR: Okay.
(INDISTINCTIVE BACKGROUND TALKING)
02.10.51 COAST GUARD: The C-, the Coast Guard’s aware of what, we know
that you’re bay, you’re on the Gulf side, sir.
MIKE: We’re on the Gulf side, but if that sheriff, if that
sheriff’s right there, man, he is, he’s two minutes away in
his boat.
COAST GUARD: You can see him?
911 OPERATOR: You can see him?
MIKE: No. He’s on the, he’s on the Atlantic side; I’m on the
Gulf side. He can get here really quickly because I—
02.11.08 COAST GUARD: I, I think she, I think she’s, uh, running that
information, sir, getting him right now (...?).
MIKE: Right on, right on. And I, and I, and I’m a little
shaky, but I’ve definitely (...?) (TALKS OVER)(INDISTINCTIVE)

02.11.34 MIKE: Need him here on the bayside, yes. (PAUSE) We’re about
five miles on the bayside off of the, uh, highway. (TALKS
OVER) About 5 miles out.
911 OPERATOR: Five miles from Bay Pines off the highway.
MIKE: Between Little Torch and Big Pine.
911 OPERATOR: Between Little Torch and Big Pine?
02.11.59 MIKE: We’re, yeah, we’re on the bayside of Big Pine in the

and they just, uh, they’re getting the sheriff, uh, (our
position?), and I think he’s trying to make his way around to
the Gulf side right now. Uh, she’s going in and out. I can’t
