Her dream is to play
professional baseball. She
loves to play baseball.
Her uncle Leo was
another character in the
book, but they called
him Bones. He was
close enough to be
Mamie’s big brother.
He had a good
personality. He also
loved baseball.
This story takes place in
the mid-twentieth century
and in many states,
because she was playing
professional baseball.
Mamie Johnson
wanted to be a
professional
baseball pitcher,
but in a sport that
is dominated by
all white men
there is no place
for a black
woman. Will she
get to play or will
she not? You will
have to read the
book and find out.
