ferent types of names and surnames used by the Goan

Catholic variant of many first names is the Goan Catholic

Konkani version of its Portuguese counterpart which was

borrowed from the Portuguese language (examples in-

clude Zâbel from the Portuguese Isabel, Zuãuñ from the

Portuguese João, Pedru from the Portuguese Pedro, and

Zoze from the Portuguese José). Most Goan Catholic names

for males follow the second declension. Among women,

the names follow the first declension, while among

young girls, the names follow the second declension.

Another popular naming convention uses English names,

like Kevin, Kenneth and Sanferd, that have no Konkani

variants. European names such as Savio, Mario and An-

drea are also popular.

Surnames

The Portuguese surnames like Rodrigues and Carvalho

are common found among Goan Catholics due to the for-

mer Portuguese colonization of Goa, India and generally

follow the second declension.. These Portuguese sur-

names are also observed among the Mangalorean

Catholics and East Indian Catholics and some other Chris-

tians in India. Portuguese surnames are very popular

across the world significantly in the Portuguese-speaking

countries of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Macau, Cape Verde,

East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé

and Príncipe and Mozambique.

Bold indicates common surnames

Italics indicates uncommon surnames

There is no evidence of any sort of interaction of the

Goan Catholics with the Spanish.
