Co-chair Jim Merrill called the meeting to order at 2:50 p.m.



Adoption of the Agenda

Program Changes: Delete: Supervision and Medical Office Assistant; Suspend: Office

Michael Bowen reported a correction to the Administrative Assistant Program units. In

his review, he had noted an error in the total number of units required for the program. It

is one less unit. The department will send a corrected copy to the Student Learning

Office for the master curriculum file

Mati Sanchez presented the courses. The department would like to add distance learning

to the courses.

Michael Bowen presented the courses. He explained that this is part of the 5-year review

of course outlines and the courses are obsolete and the department does not plan to offer

Ed Lynch presented the courses. The courses are being revised as part of a proposal with

CSU Fresno to offer a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Technology at Oxnard

College. Ed presented information on the proposal, which if approved would be

implemented in the Spring 2003.

Revisions to these courses included adding Electronic Technology to the Discipline

First Reading Approval: To add Distance Learning to SPAN R101A, SPAN R101B; to

delete BIOL R102, BIOL R102L, BIOL R104, BIOL R107, BIOL R108, BIOL R112,

BIOL R114L, CHEM R108, CHEM R108L, PHYS R110; and to approve revisions to the

ENGT courses.



INFORMATION/DISCUSSION

Banner Titles - 30 Characters



Co-chair Jim Merrill announced that the Banner System will now accept 30 characters. It

had previously been 25 characters.



Title 5 Section 78016 - Review of Vocational or Occupational Programs Every 2

Years



Cheryl Shearer provided information on the compliance and how to implement the Title 5

Section 78016 - Review of Vocational or Occupational Programs every 2 years.

Discussion followed with consensus that the Program Review Committee would be the

committee that would address this issue. It is not a proper action or part of the charge of

the Curriculum Committee.

Clearing Inactive Courses



Co-chair Jim Merrill announced that as part of the 5-year course outline review the

Student Learning Office will assist the departments and division by preparing the

paperwork for courses identified for deletion or suspension. A list has been distributed to

the deans which include the name of the course and the date the course was approved or

any action recorded on the course outline. The deadline to submit the list to the Student

Learning Office is May 1. All courses identified for deletion or suspension will be put on

the agenda for the May 8 meeting for action.



Electronic Agenda Packet Distribution



Co-chair Jim Merrill asked the committee for their input on the current procedure of the

electronic distribution of the agenda packet. There was consensus that it was working

and we would continue with the electronic distribution. The only issue mentioned was

not adhering to the meeting deadlines for submittal of agenda items.



Voting, Proxies - Addition to the Committee Handbook



Co-chair Jim Merrill distributed draft language for the proxy voting to the Curriculum

Committee Handbook in the Curriculum Committee Voting Process, p.10 section. The

following is the draft language: In the event that a voting member of the committee

cannot attend an action meeting, another member of the same department or

representative group can be given a proxy to vote. The voting member will inform either

of the co-chairs or the administrative aide of the designation of proxy in advance of the

meeting. All proxies will be voted in person by attendance at the meeting. A voting

member of the committee who leaves a meeting prior to an action may designate another

committee member in attendance to vote on his or her behalf.



Curriculum Institute -Sign-up Deadline April 30



Co-chair Jim Merrill reminded the members to notify the Student Learning Office if they

were interested in attending the State Academic Senate Curriculum Institute scheduled

for July 11-13, in San Jose by Tuesday, April 30. Funding has been identified for five

representatives from Oxnard College to attend.



BUS R098E - Basic Business English



The BUS R098E Basic Business English was presented as an information item. The

course is to develop a vocational basic business English course for the Office

Occupations Preparation Program.

Comparison of Degrees Awarded and GE Certifications



Co-chair Ruth Hemming distributed a report on OC Comparison of Degrees Awarded

and GE Certifications from Spring 1997-Fall 2001. The report was presented for

information based on discussion of the AA/AS General Education Options at the March

20 meeting. Dr. Hemming reported certifications are difficult to extract, and there is no

ready way to discern how many students are double counted as both transfer-certified and

AA/AS degree recipients. She will be reviewing the report with the registrar.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 3:45p.m. The next meeting is

scheduled for Wednesday, May 8, 2002, 2 p.m. in the Verizon Conference Room
