New program available to help teens' parents
By Gail Cetnar
Staff Writer
Raising a teenager presents a whole new set of challenges to parents.
A new program is designed to make those challenges a little easier to handle.
The Strengthening Families Program aims to help Clark County parents prepare
for their children's teen years.
The free, seven-week program uses videos, discussions, games and role-playing
to guide parents and their children through issues that confront families with
teen-agers.
Participants will practice problem solving, handling frustration, getting along with
others and having fun as a family. Activities also are geared toward
strengthening family communication and confronting issues with drugs and
alcohol.
The program is open to families who live in Clark County with children ages 10 to
14.
Sessions run once a week from 6 to 8:15 p.m.
One is offered on Mondays starting Jan. 22 at the Clark County Educational
Service Center located in the Kissell Center, 30 Warder St. Another is offered on
Thursdays starting Jan. 25 at Tecumseh Middle School, 10000 W. National Road
in New Carlisle.
No sessions will be offered the week of Feb. 19.
Child care is available for children ages 3 to 9.
Strengthening Families is a program of the Iowa State University
Extension. It is funded locally by the Mental Health & Recovery Board of Clark,
Greene and Madison Counties and the Clark County Educational Service Center.
