“I Can See Clearly Now” with HDTV

High-Definition Fact Sheet

High definition television (HDTV) delivers stunning images, brilliant color and crystal-clear sound quality,

creating a theater-quality viewing experience in the comfort of your home. Unlike many satellite TV areas,

cable can deliver local TV stations in high definition (HD) through a digital cable set-top box or directly to TV

sets equipped for a CableCARD. In addition, a number of cable providers are currently testing HD On

Demand in select markets, further enhancing cable service. Today, HD service is available in more than 90

million cable homes across the country.

HOW IT HDTV offers the highest quality resolution in digital television–better than standard-

WORKS: definition and enhanced-definition television sets. High-definition allows more detail to

be packed into a picture because of the higher resolution available with HD sets.

CONTENT: There is a wealth of TV program options offered in HD such as national and local

primetime favorites, sports, movies, documentaries, local concerts and video games.

AVAILABILITY/ HD programming is available to most digital cable customers at a nominal monthly

PRICE: fee. Premium HD programming may also be available depending on the customer’s

cable provider. The cable company will support installation and provide all needed

equipment. Additionally, some cable providers also offer free HD digital video

recorders (DVRs), so customers can record programming in HD.

CABLECARDS: The cable industry has collaborated with the TV set manufacturers to develop digital

cable ready sets, which are enabled for CableCARDs. CableCARDs are the size of a

credit card and slip in a slot built into the back of specially-designed televisions and

enable you to receive your digital and HDTV programs without a set top box.

Advanced technology to enhance CableCARDs is in development. For further

information on CableCARDs or the OpenCable Application Platform (OCAP) Primer,
