Curriculum Technical Theatre - Makeup
Through a variety of experiences, students communicate in a
dramatic form, make artistic choices, solve problems, build positive
self-concepts and relate interpersonally.
THE STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO SAFELY APPLY TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE
AND SKILLS TO CREATE AND/OR APPLY FUNCTIONAL MAKEUP.
I. ENABLING OBJECTIVE/EXPECTANCY: The student will recognize
the functions and products of stage makeup.

II. ENABLING OBJECTIVE/EXPECTANCY: The student will
comprehend and apply the principles of makeup design.
Content:
A. Principles of makeup
1. Facial anatomy (bone structure, eyes, nose, mouth,
forehead, cheeks, chin, neck)
2. Highlight and shadow
3. Effects of lighting
B. Makeup application techniques
1. Modeling with paint
2. Prosthesis
Activities:
A. Identify and label facial anatomy
B. Examine the effects of highlight and shadow by drawing a shape
and shadowing it.
C. Examine the effects of highlight and shadow by viewing an
application to a face.
D. Examine the effects of lighting on makeup by shining a light
onto a face with and without makeup.
Materials: Diagram of facial structure

III. ENABLING OBJECTIVE/EXPECTANCY: The student will design
makeup to portray a character.

Activities:
A. Analyze a character from a play for personality traits, race, age,
background, occupation, status, environment, status, health
and purpose in plot.
B. Research historical background of character and collect images
for fashion trends.
C. Draw a makeup design for a character and list materials needed
for application.
Materials: Scripts
Research tools: internet, books, magazines and sample
designs
Drawing paper or makeup design template, colored pencils
Assessment: Applicable assessments are indicated.

Activities:
A. Demonstrate safety practices in makeup application
1. Check materials for cleanliness
2. Check model for allergies, contacts or other issues
concerning use of makeup.
B. Apply makeup following prepared design.
C. Check makeup under lighting instrument
D. Analyze effectiveness of design.
E. Clean and store all materials used.
F. Safely remove makeup.
Materials: all makeup and applicators needed to complete design(s),
soap, water, makeup remover, prepared design, model lighting
instrument, evaluation rubric
Assessment: Applicable assessments are indicated.
