Cathedral High School Vision
Cathedral High School, a Catholic institution,
will be the model for all high schools
as she profoundly shapes the way students
think, serve and lead.
Cathedral High School Mission
Cathedral, a Catholic college preparatory high school,
provides to a diverse group of students opportunities
for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional
and physical growth through service and academic
excellence.
January 23, 2008
Dear Cathedral Parents,
This coming week (January 28th – February 1st) are very special days for students, faculties,
and staffs who work in Catholic Schools in the U.S.A. National Catholic Schools’ Week is a
time in which we focus on the benefits of a Catholic education, of being able to include our faith
dimension in our general education.
As a product of Catholic education from kindergarten through high school and as an educator
who has taught, coached, and been an administrator in Catholic schools the majority of my
professional life, I appreciate the holistic education that is so possible here. Today, it seems that
our society is becoming so specialized, it is very fragmented. This makes it even more difficult
for our children to see the larger picture towards which we constantly encourage the.
I am a sum of my family, my history, my faith, my thoughts, my dreams, my blessings, my
shortcomings, and the way that I intertwine all of these. What an important role my Catholic
school personal history has played in the person I am.

Starfish Initiative: The world is an ever changing place where education is increasingly
important. However, not everyone with college dreams is able to steer they way to a college.
But there is something you can do to ensure more worthy high school students get the education
they desire. Starfish Initiative is dedicated to helping promising, underprivileged high school
students go to college. Through individual mentors, Starfish provides the necessary practical and
moral support it takes to graduate from high school, apply to college, and navigate the world of
financial aid. Celebrate National Mentoring Month and make a difference. Please visit our
website at www.starfishinitiative.org for more information on how you can help guide a
promising high school student to college, or see Mike Feeney (mfeeney@cathedral-irish.org or

Four-time state championship winner returns as Cathedral’s head football coach
Indianapolis, Ind. — The Cathedral High School family welcomes the return of Rick Streiff
as head football coach for the Fighting Irish.
“I’m looking forward to returning,” said Streiff. “I had a great run at Cathedral and I hope
to be able to build on that.” Streiff, 45, was Cathedral’s head coach from 1989 to 2002 and led
the Irish to five state finals games appearances, four of which resulted in championship titles.
Those honors were earned in 1992, 1996, 1998 and 1999. In all, Streiff has coached in central
Indiana for some 18 years, and has amassed an overall record of 143-71.
“I am very pleased that Rick has accepted our offer to return to Cathedral High School to
serve as head football coach and social studies teacher,” said Stephen J. Helmich, Cathedral
president. “Rick is a ‘Cathedral man’ who already has established himself as one of the most
successful football coaches in Cathedral’s long gridiron history. He is an outstanding person, an
4
outstanding classroom teacher and a very positive role model for the young men who will play
football at the state’s most successful football program.”
Streiff was selected from a candidate pool that included some very highly-qualified
applicants, said David L. Worland, Cathedral principal. Worland said the new coach will
continue the school’s tradition of strong leadership not only on the football field, but inside the
classroom as well. “Rick Streiff is the type of coach who will be concerned with the holistic
development of his student athletes,” Worland said. “He will lead by example and further the
school’s mission of providing his players opportunities for spiritual, intellectual, social,
emotional and physical growth. We welcome Rick to our staff.”
Streiff currently teaches at North Central High School, and in 2005 served as the head
football coach. Streiff replaces the retiring Jim O’Hara, who led the Irish for the past six seasons.
O’Hara resigned in December citing health concerns.

The 100 Black Men of Indianapolis has launched its 2007-2008 African-American History
Program. We are very excited about the positive response we received to this groundbreaking
program. Teachers, students and parents from across the city have embarked on the exciting,
enriching and educational adventure of exploring African-American history.
As one of the thirteen local schools who established on-site African-American History
clubs, your school is integral to the success of the program. Two important events are coming up
right around the corner. We are asking that each site fully participate in competitions, field trips
and cultural activities provided as part of the program. We would like your help in encouraging
your club leaders, students and parents to attend.
On Saturday, January 26, 2008, IUPUI professors from the African and African-
American Diaspora Studies Program will host a special presentation for our program. Club
leaders, students and parents are invited to travel back in time to the early 1900’s to see two of
the great African-American Leaders of that Era debate the best strategies for the advancement of
black people.
On Saturday, February 16, 2008, the “100” and the IPS Office of Multicultural
Education will host the preliminary round of the African-American History Challenge. Your
school’s team(s) will have the opportunity to showcase their hard-work and knowledge of
African-American history in a competition that emphasizes rapid thinking and teamwork.
I look forward to seeing your school’s African-American History participants out in force
at both of these events. Thank you in advance for your support and participation.

Write an essay for a possible scholarship. Mrs. Scheetz is encouraging any student who was not
yet 16 by Dec. 31, 2007 to write a speech for this contest. She will be happy to help them either
before or after school or during my resource.
The contest is February 26th for the boys and February 19th for the girls.
Students can win up to a $1500.00 scholarship. Cathedral has been represented so well in
this city and then in the state-wide contest. We have won both divisions, both 1st and 2nd
places for the last few years. Mrs. Scheetz is quoted as saying, “Our kids do a fantastic job.
I would just need to let them know how many students from here to expect so please send
your kids my way as soon as possible, please. I love to work with these young people. I am
always inspired by their vision, their wisdom and their idealism is contagious. Please advise
if you know any student you could encourage to participate in this.”
The title for their 4-5 minute speech is to be: “Why Me? Why Not?”
Interested? See Mrs. Scheetz for an application, for any questions and to set up times to discuss
ideas about your speech.

Your PSAT scores will be back in a few more weeks. We know you will have lots of questions.
What do PSAT scores mean? How do they affect your road to college? We are here to help you
answer these questions! We have partnered with The Princeton Review to hold a free session
with college admissions experts who can help you plan your next steps.
College Admissions: PSAT Scores...Now What?
The seminar will take place on Thursday, January 24th from 7pm to 8:30pm right here at
Cathedral High School. At this seminar, you will...
* Read your PSAT score report, and determine what it means in relation to your target
schools
* Figure out which tests you need to take: SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Tests
* Learn how to tackle the college admissions process less stressfully
* Create a test prep and college admissions timeline (especially important if you plan to
apply for early action or early decision)
Don't forget to bring a copy of your PSAT scores so we can help you analyze them.
To ensure that a set of free informative handouts is available for each family, The Princeton

Service:

With our 2008 personal goals and objectives newly underway, let us turn to the most
compelling areas of need to perform our service stewardship. Should you desire to pursue an
interest not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here.
Seniors, please submit your service documentation to complete your graduation requirement of
80 service hours. For all other students, continue working hard on your service hours. If I can
assist you in your service objectives, please do not hesitate to call or email Mrs. Halstead at
chalstead@cathedral-irish.org.

really appreciated. Because it is cold, more individuals are physically using the day center
and are demonstrating strong interest in these classes. Cathedral seniors are doing an
excellent job of instruction. Just last week while serving dinner at the Wheeler Mission Men's
Mission with some of the juniors, three of the clients came up to me and told me how much
the computer training has helped them. One individual tested 85% competent in Word, Excel

“Light The Way” School Wide Day of Community Stewardship
On Wednesday, January 30, the entire faculty and staff of Cathedral High School will be
participating in a day of service and professional development in the community of Indianapolis
by invitation of Ramona Powell, Director of Diversity at Cathedral. In the spirit of stewardship
and solidarity, the students of Cathedral are also being asked to engage in community service on
Wednesday, January 30. This community day is consistent with the vision and mission of
Cathedral High School and takes place during our National Catholic School Week, whose theme
is entitled “Light The Way.” Specific service opportunities for Cathedral students for January 30
have been summarized colorfully and may be directly accessed here. And, of course, all of these
stewardship efforts count toward service hours.

Boys Basketball-
The Varsity Boys' Basketball team recently captured the City Tourney Championship for the 3rd
consecutive season by posting four victories in 6 days over Cardinal Ritter, Scecina, Northwest,
and Howe in the 2008 Indianapolis City Tournament. Our Class 4A state-ranked #5 Fighting
Irish posted an opening round victory over Cardinal Ritter 74-45. Senior Sean Esposito
connected on 5 of 6 three-pointers in leading the Irish with 17 points. Junior Barry Flynn tallied
16
13 points on 6-6 shooting from the field and pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds. In a well-
balanced offensive attack, Errick Peck and Patrick Paligraf also contributed 13 and 12 points
respectively. In 2nd round action, the Irish jumped out to an early 24-11 first quarter lead and
coasted to a 76-32 victory over Scecina. All eleven varsity players scored in the contest paced
by Sean Esposito's 12 points. The Fighting Irish then prevailed 72-60 against a strong,
athletic Northwest team in the City Semi-Finals last Friday evening. The Fighting Irish set the
tone early as they jumped out to a 26-16 1st quarter lead. The Irish backcourt of Patrick
Paligraf and Sean Esposito combined to shoot 9-15 from the three point line which eventually
opened up the inside as Errick Peck scored 16 points. In the championship game held at
Arsenal Tech High School, the Irish again took command early as they outscored the Hornets 20-
7 in the first quarter of play. Howe cut the deficit to one-point on two different occasions in the
4th quarter, but the Fighting Irish responded to the challenge with back-to-back jumpers by Sean
Esposito, and the Irish defeated the Hornets 64-60. Cathedral joins Tech and Washington as the
only 3 schools to have won 3 consecutive city titles in the history of the tournament.
Our 8-4 JV team also participated in the City Tournament last week. The JV registered a 50-30
opening round victory over Cardinal Ritter. Leading by just 6 points at the half, the Irish picked
up its intensity outscoring the Raiders 20-9 in the 3rd quarter. The team placed 4 players in
double figures - Kofi Hughes and Kevin Owens with 12 points each while Franqlin Gatson
and Nick Stenson tallied 10 points a piece. The JV team defeated Heritage Christian in a
second-round game Thursday night 43-23 to advance to Saturday morning's semi-finals held at
Arlington High School. Against Heritage Christian the JV once again dominated the 3rd quarter
as they outscored the Eagles 13-2 in that 6 minute span. Franqlin Gatson led the Irish in
scoring with 9 points. In the semi-finals the Irish led most of the way as they executed an
excellent game plan to slow down the high scoring Pioneers of Northwest, but were outscored
13-2 in the 4th quarter and suffered a 36-30 defeat.
The JV and Varsity team will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Arlington High
School on Friday, Jan. 25th and then head to Evansville Rietz on Saturday evening, Jan.
26th. Congratulations to the Varsity Boys Basketball team on their 2008 City
Championship!
Wrestling-
The Fighting Irish Wrestling program honored its 7 seniors - Brandon Dennin, Connor
Hofmeister, David Page, Ari Nassiri, Jerry Whitaker, and valkyries Molly McGinley and
Danielle Lintner on Wednesday, January 16th in its last home match of the season against
Roncalli High School. The Irish soundly defeated the Rebels 49-16 in the match. The wrestling
team then traveled to Bloomington South the next night and posted a 43-21 victory. Tony
McGinley (140 pound weight class), Gavin McGinley (145 pound weight class) and
heavyweight Brandon Dennin recorded falls in their respective matches. The Fighting Irish
wrestling team will participate in the 2008 Sectionals held next Saturday, Jan. 26th at Lawrence
Central High School. The top 4 place winners in each weight class will advance to the regional
tournament. Best of luck to the wrestlers as they begin their quest for a state title!
Girls Basketball-
The Varsity Lady Irish picked up its 10th win of the season by narrowly defeating Arlington on
Tuesday, Jan. 15th 63-62. There were numerous lead changes throughout the game, but the
Lady Irish appeared to take control late in the game with 2 clutch free throws from Abby
17
MacGill and a wing jumper by Michelle Roberson. Arlington came storming back in the
closing seconds, but a key steal by Mariah Whitaker and a huge offensive rebound by Kristen
Linenberg allowed the Lady Irish to prevail. Abby MacGill and Adrienne Sahm tied for
scoring honors with 16 points a piece. The Lady Irish also took Class 2A two-time defending
state champion Heritage Christian to the wire last Saturday evening. Adrienne Sahm hit 3
consecutive free throws to cut the lead to 2 points 55-57, but the Eagles connected on 4 free
throws in the last 20 seconds to seal the 61-58 victory over our upset-minded Lady Irish.
Adrienne Sahm led the Irish in scoring with 19 points while senior post players Kristen
Linenberg and Abby MacGill combined for 26 points and Michelle Roberson tallied 9 assists
and 7 steals.
The JV team improved its record to 12-6 by defeating Arlington 28-27. In its most impressive
team performance of the season, the JV defeated Heritage Christian last Saturday evening 38-27
behind an 11 point performance by freshman Olivia Sedwick. Sophomores Abby Lauck and
Gabby Hitchens also provided a great boost with their timely shooting and aggressive defensive
pressure.
The JV and Varsity teams will travel to Perry Meridian on Wednesday, January 23rd to face the
Falcons. JV will tip off at 6:00 pm with Varsity following @ 7:30 pm. Best of luck Lady
Irish!
Freshman Basketball-
The girls' freshman basketball team improved its record to 9-4 with victories over New
Palestine and Zionsville. Against New Palestine, the Lady Irish trailed 20-17 early in the 4th
quarter, but went on a 13-2 run to close out the game and seal the victory. Stephanie Israel
scored 7 of her game-high 10 points and registered 5 steals in the decisive final quarter as the
Irish defeated New Palestine 30-22. The girls' freshman team then suffered a disappointing 24-
18 loss to Brebeuf, but got back on track quickly as they soundly defeated Zionsville last night
42-13. Emily Preston dominated inside with 12 points and 8 rebounds while Megan Tsangaris
chipped in 9 points in the contest. With just a 4 point halftime lead, the Lady Irish applied
defensive pressure as they pulled away in the 2nd half by outscoring Zionsville 28-3. The Lady
Irish travel to Warren Central this evening, Jan. 22nd to face the Warriors in a 6:00 game.
The boys' freshman basketball team improved its record to 7-2 with a 42-36 victory over
Arlington and a 54-40 victory over Southport. Andrew Deering led the team in scoring with 13
points against Arlington. Against Southport the boys' held a slim one-point lead at the half, but
outscored the Cardinals 16-5 in the 3rd quarter to coast to a 14-point victory. Connor Barthel
led all scorers with 18 points while Brooks Butler chipped in 11 points. The freshman boys'
will host Warren Central today, January 22nd @ 6:00 pm in the Auxiliary gym. Best of luck!
Co-Ed Varsity Swimming - Our co-ed Varsity swimming and diving teams participated in a
triangular meet with Roncalli and the International School at the IUPUI Natatorium on
Wednesday, January 16th. The girls team finished in 1st place with a score of 149 points while
Roncalli (122 points) and International (33 points) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. The boys'
team was defeated by Roncalli in a close meet by 11 points (137-126). Tonight the Irish
swimmers travel to IUPUI Natatorium once again to participate in the Brebeuf Invitational
"Schools Without Pools" @ 5:00 pm. Best of luck swimmers!

at least a few days? Did you know that 1/3 of these people are families with children?
Please read the message below that came to me today regarding our Archbishop Daniel
Buechlein from Msgr. Joseph Schaedel:
Last week, Archbishop Buechlein underwent a series of medical tests. He
had been experiencing fatigue and had noticed a swelling under his right
arm.
Friday, January 18, the archbishop received a medical report that he has
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. This is a cancer affecting the lymph nodes.
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is also commonly known as Hodgkin’s disease.
The archbishop is meeting this week with an oncologist to determine where
he goes from here concerning a course of treatment. He already knows
that chemotherapy will be required. He will undergo a complete body CT
scan to determine more precisely the extent of the problem.
Chemotherapy has proven to be a highly effective method for treating this
disease.
The archbishop has been told that the side effects of chemotherapy will
include further fatigue. He wants all of us to know that he deeply regrets
the interruption this may cause in his normal obligations and schedule.
At the same time, we do not expect the day-to-day operation of the
Archdiocese of Indianapolis to be greatly affected. We are blessed to have
so many dedicated and hardworking clergy, religious, parish life
coordinators. We have the same in our dedicated administrators
throughout the archdiocese and certainly in our staff at the Catholic Center
and its related agencies. Our many ministries will continue as usual.
21
This is all the information we have at the moment.
Archbishop Buechlein asks for our prayers; he promises to pray for all of
us.
Rev. Msgr. Joseph F. Schaedel
Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia
January 22, 2008
I also ask that all of you please keep Archbishop Buechlein in your prayer as he continuous to be
advised to the proper testing and subsequent plans to begin possible treatments.
Sincerely,
David L. Worland
