Team Working Exercise

-----LOST IN SPACE---- www.coach-and-courses.com

You are a member of a space crew originally scheduled to rendezvous

P3I

with the mother ship on the lighted side of the moon. Due to

mechanical failure your ship was forced to land at a spot some 200 miles

from the rendezvous point(RV).

During the landing much of the equipment of your ship was damaged

and, since your survival relies on your reaching the mother ship, you

must choose the most critical items for the 200 mile trek.

People & Process

Listed below are 15 items left intact and servicable after the landing. Performance Improvement

Your task is to

RANK them in terms of their importance in allowing you and your colleagues to reach the RV point.

Place Number 1 next to the most important item, 2 next to the second most important and so on til you

get to 15 which is the least important. You must rank ALL items and there can be no items with equal

ranking.

NASA’s Ranking Item NASA’s Reasoning

15 Box of Matches No oxygen on moon to

sustain flame; virtually

worthless

4 Food concentrate Efficient means of

supplying energy

requirements

6 50ft of nylon rope Useful for scaling cliffs

and tying injured together

8 parachute silk protection from sun’s rays

13 Portable heating unit Not needed unless on dark

side

11 Two .45 calibre pistols Possible means of

propulsion

12 One case dehydrated milk Bulkier duplication of

food concentrate

1 Two 100lb tanks of Most pressing survival

oxygen need

3 Stellar Map (of the Primary means of

moon’s constellations) navigation

9 Self inflating life raft CO2 bottle on raft may be

used as a means of

propulsion

14 Magnetic Compass Moon’s magnetic field is

not polarised; worthless

for navigation

2 Five gallons of water Replacement for

tremendous liquid loss on

journey

10 Signal Flares To signal mother ship

when in visual range

7 First aid kit with injection Safety(needles will fit

needles special aperture on suit)

5 Solar powered FM For comms with mother

transmitter/receiver ship...FM short range

requires line of sight.
