Passage 8
You do not need every word to understand the meaning of what you read. In fact, too much
emphasis on separate words both slows your speed and reduces your comprehension.
First, any habit, which slows down your silent reading to the speed at which you speak or
read loud, is inefficient. If you point to each word as you read, or move your head, or form the
words with your lips, you read poorly. Less obvious habits also hold back reading efficiency.
One is “saying” each word silently by moving your tongue or throat; another is “hearing” each
word as you read.
36
These are habits which should have been outgrown long ago. The beginning reader is
learning how letters can make words, how written words are pronounced, and how sentences
are put together. Your reading purpose is quite different; it is to understand meaning.
It ahs been supposed that up to 75% of the words in English sentences are not really
necessary for expressing the meaning. The secret of silent reading is to find out those key
words and phrases which carry the thought, and to pay less attention to words which exist only
for grammatical completeness.
An efficient reader can grasp the meaning from a page at least twice as fast as he can read
the page aloud. He takes in a whole phrase or thought unit at a time. If he “says” or “hears”
words to himself, they are selected ones, said for emphasis.
1. This passage is mainly about _______.
A. improving eye movement B. reading more widely

4. While reading, efficient reader usually _________.
A. move their eyes quickly B. take in whole phrases or thought units
C. point at key words D. read only important points for speed.
5. Which of the following is not true?
A. Bad comprehension comes from emphasis on separate words.
B. A good reader tries to find out those key words and phrases for meaning.
C. Reading aloud decreases your speed of reading of meaning
D. An efficient reader always pays attention to how words are put together.

The WTO is run by its member governments. All major decisions are made by the
membership as a whole, either by ministers ( who meet at least once every two years ) or by
their ambassadors or delegates ( who meet regularly in Geneva ). Decisions are normally taken
by consensus.
In this respect, the WTO is different from some other international organizations such as
50
the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. In the WTO, power is not delegated (授权)
to a board of directors or the organization‟s head.
Reaching decisions by consensus among some 150 members can be difficult. Its main
advantage is that decisions made this way are more acceptable to all members. And despite the
difficulty, some remarkable agreements have been reached. Nevertheless, proposals for the
creation of a smaller executive body -perhaps like a board of directors each representing
different groups of countries - are heard periodically. But for now, the WTO is a
member-driven, consensus-based organization.

Japan has a problem many other countries would envy-its workforce works too hard.
Curing Japanese workers of the disease “workaholism” is providing a difficult job, partly
because many of them like work better than anything else, experts say.
Last month, the Japanese Government passed a law for a 40 hour working week, down
from 48 hours, to let people spend time away from the office of factory. But it could be many
years before average work hours fall to the new level.

until their boss finally puts on his jacket and heads out of the door.

On Smoking
Smoking is a serious problem for both China and the world. There are many smokers in the
world. What is more, the number of smokers is increasing, among whom there are many
children and females.
Smoking is extremely harmful. Firstly, it does harm to the health of both the smoker and
the people surrounding him. According to the scientific research, a lot of cancer cases result
from smoking. Secondly, smoking can cause pollution, especially air pollution which in turn
does harm to people‟s health. Thirdly, it is also a source of potential danger. It is reported that
many fire disaster are caused by smoking.
So it is quite urgent to solve this problem. Although it is a quite difficult task. To get rid of
smoking, following steps should be taken. Firstly, regulations should be set up to restrict the
production of cigarettes. Secondly, smoking should be banned in public areas. Those who
smoke in non-smoking areas should be heavily fined. Thirdly, the media should inform the
public of the harm of smoking. I am sure that so long as such steps are taken, this problem will
be solved.

Don‟t Hesitate to Say “No”
It is very difficult to say “No” to a request, especially to a request from a close friend.
However, on some occasions, you have to say “ No”. for example, suppose one friend of yours
asks you to take exams for him, and he promises to offer you some material benefits, to such
request, definitely, you should say “ No”.
In real life, there are many people who do not say “ No” when they should do so. There are
several reasons for this practice. One important one is that they fear they would lose the friend.
When we should say “ No‟, don‟t hesitate to say so. Otherwise you do harm to both you
and the one who made the request. For example, if some one bribes you and you don‟t say
“ No‟ to it, both of you may end up in prison.
So do not hesitate to say “ No”, when you need to do so.

Water
Water is the base of life. It is an undeniable fact that there is no life if there is no water.
People have to use water to satisfy their thirst, to maintain personal and their belonging‟s
cleanness, to wash the food they eat, to irrigate the crops they plant, and to build the house they
need. Animals and plants also need water in the similar way as men do.
The world‟s water supply is fixed and limited. It is a well known fact that water is in short

Therefore, it is very necessary for us to realize that we should value each drop of water. It is
our duty to take care of water and make an effort in saving water. If we do not take any actions
to save water right mow, it may be run out some day.

street to catch a bus to go home.
On the other hand, there are some disadvantages. First, it is very expensive to own a car. It
is expensive to buy a car, to maintain it and the price of fuel is also increasing fast. Second, it is

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Internet
With the development of computers, the Internet has become widely used. On the one
hand, the Internet shows us a closer and wider world than ever before. Through the Internet, we
can discuss international crisis, football matches, or viewpoints on everything with known or
unknown people. The world seems smaller than before. Just staying at home, we can get all
kinds of useful and latest information we need. We can do shopping, book tickets, look for a
job and so on. In a word, Internet makes our life more convenient.
However, on the other hand, Internet has also brought us many problems. First of all, there
is too much rubbish on the net. A lot of useless and bad information is sent to us. It has led to
the increasing difficulty in finding what we want. Moreover, time is wasted on playing games,
and sometimes we become addicted to Internet without being able to come out of it.

that Internet has contributed and will contribute greatly to our life. When we use it, we must be

Family Cars in China
With the development of car industry and the improvement of people‟s living standard in
China, more and more cars are going into Chinese families. Some families have cars made in
China, and others own cars imported from abroad. They drive them either to work or for
holidays.
Cares have quite a number of advantages. It is very convenient to travel by cars, and this
saves a lot of time. As a means of transportation easy to handle, family cars can carry not only
people, but also goods. They can go almost anywhere owning to their small size. That is why
more and more families are trying to buy them.
However, just as a coin has two sides, cars also have some disadvantages. They cost the
owners a lot of monye for the fuel, insurance and maintenace; they are responsible for air
pollution; and what‟s more, car accidents kill hundreds of people each year and traffic jams
happen very often. All these cause us many problems. Therefore, we should work out some
ways to solve them.

Turn Off Your Mobile Phone
In modern times, science develops very fast. New technical inventions appear time and
again, such as internet MP3, MP4, mobile phone, etc. The mobile phone has many advantages.
It provides very convenient contact and communication between people. Wherever we are, we
can chat with our parents and friends through it. If you are a businessman you can benefit
greatly from it, of course. It saves much trouble in our travel and communication.
At the same time, mobile has some disadvantages. Firstly, it may be harmful to our
health. As it radiates a lot in transmitting messages, the strong radiations will do harm to our
ears and brain. Another disadvantage is that, many students spend too much money on it so that
they don't have enough money for food. This usually results in poor health. Moreover, using the
mobile phone can be a nuisance. For example, in a quiet classroom, a sudden noise made by the
phone will interrupt the teacher and students‟ attention. So we should turn off our mobile phone
in some situations.
