What is a Hybrid Vehicle ?

 Hybrid vehicle uses more than one source for producing and delivering power to the wheels  The “primary” source is a diesel or gas engine, and the “secondary” or “hybrid” source is electrical or hydraulic  Hybrids can capture and store energy during braking

 Hybrid system allow both sources to operate most of the time near their optimum conditions

Hybrid Vehicle Technology

 One of the most promising new technologies emerging for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles  Offers increased vehicle fuel efficiency and reduce emissions  The potential for significant fuel economy gains in the face of

rising fuel prices is currently one of the most attractive features of the hybrid.  Possibility of reduced noise, electrical power generation, reduced brake maintenance

How many different Hybrid System do we have?

 Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)  Hybrid Hydraulic (HHV)

 Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)  Series Hybrid  Parallel hybrid

 Torque/Power split combined hybrid  Fuel Cell Hybrid

Series Hybrid Electric

 Engine powers a generator

Source: TMC Hybrid Work Truck Position Paper

 Electric motor powers the wheels

 Note the engine isn’t connected to wheels

 Energy captured during braking is stored in the battery

Both power sources are able to drive the Vehicle

•Enhanced performance by adding hybrid component

OR •Engine is downsized and torque is compensated by hybrid component.

Parallel hybrid principle

Parallel hybrid

 Electric motor used at start and initial acceleration  Engine cuts in after launch  Regenerative energy during

braking is stored in batteries  Low noise level at start  Engine Idling during stops can be avoided  Fuel Economy varies with duty

Hybird technology

– Complements the transition to Alternative Fuels

 Works with any Alternative Fuel Engines  Hybrids provide efficient use of CO2-neutral fuels  Corresponding reduction in emissions of CO2  Corresponding reduction in regulated emissions (NOx, PM)

 Favorable performance in most driving cycles
