What is a Virtual Community?
• PMI’s virtual communities are:
– groupings of individuals centered on an interest
area, industry, specific need, or knowledge area of
project management without any geographic
boundary
– groups of people from around the world primarily
communicating or interacting with each other
online

PMI-CPM Annual Meeting May 2009
What is a Virtual Community?
• Distinct and identified types of virtual
communities include:
– Knowledge Domains
– Industry Domains (industry focused)
– Affinity Communities (relationship and topic
focused)
• CPM is a Knowledge domain
– Comprised of the knowledge areas of PMBOK®,
PMI global standards, and/or the PMI family of
professional credentials and other services

PMI-CPM Annual Meeting May 2009
What is a Virtual Community?
• Virtual communities are formed within each of the
three domains
• Two virtual community models
– a community of practice, and
– a forum
• CPM is a Community of Practice (CoP)
– Domain—the area of knowledge that brings the community
together and defines the key issues that members need to
address (EVM/Project Planning and Control)
– Community—the group of people for whom the domain is
relevant and the quality of the relationship among members.
– Practice—the body of knowledge, methods, tools, stories,
cases, and documents which members share and develop
together (EVM Practice Standard)

What is a Virtual Community?
• Primary business intent of the CoP:
– Provide a forum for community members to help each
other solve everyday work problems and engage in
active networking
– Develop and disseminate best practices, guidelines,
and procedures for use by community members
– Organize, manage, and steward a body of knowledge
from which community members can draw
– Innovate and create breakthrough ideas, knowledge,
and practices

What are the Issues – Reasons for
Leaving?
• Loss of
– Autonomy – must dissolve incorporation; no Governing Board
– Name/Identity – CPM will not exist
– Financial independence – loss of accumulated funds over years of operation
– Bank account – no direct access to CPM funds
– Internet access - limited access to outside members
– Administrative Staff – no dedicated support
– Facilities – no dedicated facilities
• Other Issues
– Membership/level of interest – if CoP designation in jeopardy; become a forum or
potentially closed
– CPMs IP – PMI owns
– Contracts – PMI signs
– Reliance on PMI to provide support
– Pay PMI dues to pay for CPM dues
• MOU with PMI Unenforceable
– Concern they will not live up to their promises
– (Unilateral dissolution of PMA merging agreement - Charter)
9
PMI-CPM Annual Meeting May 2009
Why Should We Stay?
• Name/Identity – focus on EVM as a PM tool
• Governing – manage knowledge dissemination through Community
Council; administrative support from PMI
• Research – maintain research activities
• Membership – available to all PMI members through single dues
approach vs. individual membership by SIG/College
• Education – continue Educational processes with potential ability to
create EV certification
• Conferences – continue face to face conferences; capability for
webinars; membership and community access
• Publications – continue publications as currently developed
• Website – enhanced with greater capabilities
• Awards Program – no disruption in activities
• Copyright – Stays with owner (Changed)
• Increased access to PMI activities through integration of communities
• Maintains Program/Project Management relationship
• Gain access to greater staff and greater reach out to the PMI
community and EVM community as a whole
• PMI will have an EVM CoP or Forum with or without CPM

– On our own vs. PMI
– Business as usual vs. change in governance
– Known identity vs. Virtual access
– Legal protection vs. Memorandum of Understanding
– US based vs. International access
– Community focus vs. Membership focus
• Stay with PMI or go on our own (create a new
EVM professional organization)
11

Future Financial Model Proposition
In order to understand the following The current model is
model, several key elements have to be cumulative, you pay as
highlighted: you go, the costs of
membership increase with
Current
•A granular access management the knowledge areas a
capability is being integrated into the member seeks to access
technology platform
•An access model comprising several
layers is being developed:
•5 kinds of users with distinct
accesses privileges
•Several access area levels: Transition
Sneak peeks •Public Currently assessing and planning work
& teasers
•Registered User flow changes to pmi.org.
Discussions
•Forum subscribers (all PMI
& info share
members)
Plus wikis &
blogs •CoP members
Site admin •VC Leaders & Volunteers
•Leveraged business models, whereby
economies of scope and scale can occur.
Target
•Model is revenue neutral; one single fee
for access to all communities of practice
will be determined and will cover the costs
of operating the virtual communities.
Single price fee targeted for 1 January
2010 effective date.
