The Pumpkin Pack – Math

Pumpkin Pie for All!

This free activity is one activity included in

The Pumpkin Pack – a collection of activities that could

be completed over a span of a few days, or during one fun-filled

pumpkin day. Activities cover the areas of science (buoyancy), math

(circumference, scatterplot graphs, equivalent fractions, word

problems), language arts (figurative language), and visual arts.

In this math activity for multiplication and equivalent

fractions, students are given a word problem to solve. They are

given a recipe for a pumpkin pie that makes 8 servings. They must

then alter the measurements and rewrite the recipe so that each

member of the class gets one piece at school, and gets to take

home one entire pie for Thanksgiving dinner.

Students are asked to show all their work, and explain their

thinking at each step of the word problem.

Pumpkin Pie for All!

Scenario: Your class is making pumpkin pie.

Unfortunately, the only recipe you could find makes one pie

with 8 servings. How can you alter the measurements to

rewrite the recipe so that each member of the class gets one

piece at school (don’t forget about the adults), and gets to

take home one full pie for Thanksgiving dinner? Show all your

work and explain your thinking at each step of the word

problem.

Original Recipe: Pumpkin Pie – makes one whole pie with 8 servings

For the crust: 1 cup flour

2 tablespoons ice water

For the filling: 3 eggs

2 cups pumpkin puree

½ cup heavy cream

½ cup brown sugar
