Famous writers frequently studied in
      elementary schools :
   – Rabelais (1494-1553) and the myth of Gargantua, the
     good giant.
   – La Fontaine (1621-1695) : his fables are wonderful
     pieces of universal wisdom through animals'
     adventures (The Raven and the Fox).
   – Charles Perrault (1628-1703) and its folk tales like the
     Little Red Riding Hood.
   – Molière (1622-1673) and its theater plays like l’Avare.
   – Victor Hugo (1802-1885) , is THE writer of the XIXth
     Century, with his plays, poems, novels.
    Famous characters from French
             literature
• Blue-Beard ("Barbe Bleue"),
• Cinderella ("Cendrillon"),
• Sleeping Beauty ("La Belle au Bois Dormant"),
• Little Red Riding Hood ("le Petit Chaperon Rouge")
  and many others come from "Les Contes de ma Mère
  l'Oye", by Charles Perrault.
• The Little Prince ("Le Petit Prince") by writer and
  pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944)
• The Hunchback of Notre-Dame ("Quasimodo")
  comes from "Notre-Dame de Paris", by Victor Hugo.
• The Three Musketeers ("Les Trois Mousquetaires")
  by Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870)
 But literarure for young public is
              specific
• Children start to read with simple texts,
  not found in adult literature.
• A specific literature for children exists
  with albums, scientific books,
  magazines, tales (fairy tales, folk tales,
  pourquoi tales), poems and fables,
• … Sales in this segment are increasing.
  Children read a lot !
                Folk tales
• The study of tales is interesting since all
  countries in the world have their own
  tales.
• Some are european common culture:
  Andersen, Grimm, Perrault, and
  characters are known by many european
  child : Jack, Little Red Riding Hood,
  Baba yaga…
• It’s a common heritage. An open gate for
  mutual understanding. (Pourquoi tales)

• Five books - albums are selected.
• More than 10 schools are participating.
• Sept-Jan : all the books are read at home by the
  children and their parents. They can write a
  comment.
• Feb - March : Gathering of comments - Meeting
  with parents, discussions.
• April : presentation of the work done with one
